I'm on the beach in Thailand, climbing enjoying amazing sunsets. It's the hot season and, unusually for the hot season, it's raining a lot. Often at sunset here there's the sun going down and a few miles away there's a lightening storm. It's a pretty amazing sight. Also an amazing sight are Thai Lanterns. They are made of paper with a little burner at teh bottom. They light them at night and they float away over the ocean making a lot of noise. Very beautiful. Hello Marie- thanks for reading my blog :) ... read more

Well, we got waylaid on a beach again. It's so easily done though, isn't it? After the dive trip we were planning to head straight up to Laos but then another option was offered up: Railey Beach near Krabi, 2.5hours south. It was in the opposite direction but somehow we managed to justify it and shared a cab/mini van with the polish couple, Jarek and Danuta, that we'd dived with. I have to add that Jarek and Danuta are by far the most generous, warm, lovely people you could hope to meet. RAILAY BEACH It's actually part of the mainland but you can only reach it by long tail boat, so it has the feel of, and for all intents and purposes is, an island. It is a thin pennisula with Railay West on the west ... read more

Sawat di Ka and sawat bi mai! translation: hello and happy new year. Thai new year that is! April 13-15 in Thailand is the craziest experience. Water, water and more water. The thai's celebrate the new year in style. On april 13th, we taxied it down to thong sala for to join in the biggest water fight we have ever seen and/or experienced. madness. the taxis here are really pick up trucks that you ride in the back of (covered or uncovered), on these crazy mudpacked roads. Thai people stand on teh sides and chuck buckets of water on you or shoot water guns. Then.... we get to the main strip of thongsala and it is mad party everywhere. from young to old, everyone is in the streets... dancing to throbbin - almost lunatic psy trance. ... read more

The Naga is a really, really, really long fish. It is depicted on many temples lining the staircase- where it always has many heads coming out from one large head. Nagas are mythical beings that are related to serpents or dragons.... read more

Most of the population of Northern Thailand is Buddhist. Buddhist temples in Thailand are called Wats. We went to visit one in Chang Mai that is called Doi Suthep (Doi sounds like “toy” only with a “d” and Suthep is pronounced more like Sutep) All around the temple walls are depictions of scenes from the life of the Buddha. In the center people light candles and offer roses at the feet of a Buddha statue for prayer. ... read more

Hello all! Sorry I’ve been gone for so long. I was busy traveling here and where I’m staying there isn’t always electricity so it can be hard to find a good time to get online. I’m in Thailand. I was in Chang Mai last week so let’s start there. Chang Mai is far up in the north of Thailand. If you look at Thailand on a map there is a big part at the top and then it extends down to a long thin section between the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman sea. Thai people describe the shape of Thailand as an axe. I want to say a special hello to my dad’s friend Vivik. Thanks for checking my blog! ... read more

Okay, in a nutshell....... Our second night dive was okay. We survived. We did our visa run to Burma.....survived that too. Now were on Railay Beach, having so much fun, meeting loads of Canadians, staying at the best place so far for dirt cheap-literally, and trying to relax a little before heading to Cambodia. Oh yes, and the backpacks are starting to get heavy!!!! Uh oh Miss you all! Marie :)... read more

Well, we're ever so sorry its been so long since the last entry (blame the expensive island internet!!!)...... We left Krabi town on Thursday 23rd March and got a longtail boat to Railay (on the peninsular of Krabi). It took about 45 minutes and, luckily, the rain held off for the journey! (Did we mention we had rain in Krabi - we're sure you'll all be glad to hear that!!!) Had some very tricky moments trying to clamber out the boat (with our huge rucksacks) while it was still in knee-depth water!!! We arrived at Railay East. Its a lovely place - very scenic - there are two sides that consist of Railay East and West beaches and Phra Nang beach - all surrounded by huge limestone cliffs (and you can walk to each in a ... read more

In a candlelit room in Kanthaya, the beach that seemed to be isolated from the rest of the world, we learned via BBC radio that Burma had secretly changed its capital. Overnight the generals pulled out of Yangon and snuck 400 km farther north to Pyinmana, an out-of-the-way blurb on the map where plans for new government and army headquarters would be accompanied by fortified bunkers and tunnels. The official reason for the move given to the BBC Reporter in Thailand was to protect itself from a military attack by the U.S... ???? Arriving in Yangon one day before our visas expired, we were told that it was impossible to get a visa extension since the government workers weren't even 100% sure where the administration had moved to, nor how we could get an extension. So ... read more
