Kyla (hovering in the bathroom doorway): "Mommy, can you fix my hair clip?"
Me (sitting on the toilet): "Not right now, sweetheart, mommy is busy having diarrhea!"
Yep, being sick while away from home is never fun, but being sick while taking care of littles increases the misery by tenfold. Another quote came from Jake. "Mommy, why are you spitting out so much water?" as I projectile vomited the contents of my stomach in the street.
It all started with an innocent-looking veggie pad Thai noodle at our favorite restaurant, ThaiCat. We'd had a lovely morning, getting out of the house early to make it to the far northern end of the beach to meet my parents. We spent a pleasant morning swimming, snorkelling and exploring an abandoned rock bar. And then it was time for lunch...
We can't quite believe a vegetarian dish that seemed perfectly fine could make us so ill, but it all added up to it. That afternoon, we took it in turns staying with Jakey in the room for his mammoth three hour nap while the other one played at the pool with Kyla. Around 4:30pm
I started to feel a little ill, and had been having diarrhea. Fairly soon after, Scott said he was feeling a bit off too. We got ready to go out, regardless of the fact we had no appetite, as the kids at least needed to be fed. We stayed local and went to one of our toy restaurants, Patty's Secret Garden. We ordered light and picked at our food, feeling sicker with every minute. I also made several hurried trips to the bathroom. Soon enough we decided to pay the bill and head home. Scott ran off to buy supplies at the mini mart while I stayed with the kids while they finished eating. Then all of a sudden I felt it: imminent vomiting. I quickly gathered all of our stuff into my bag and told the kids we were leaving. Next thing I knew, I was running down the stone steps and vomiting violently into the grass verge at the front of the restaurant. Jake followed me and that's when he asked me why I was spitting out so much water! Kyla soon followed. We then sat on the bottom step of the restaurant waiting for Scott, hoping that
no one entering the restaurant would notice the throw-up! I'm sure everyone must have thought I was a terrible parent, being SO drunk at 8pm!
When Scott joined us, I was feeling much better but he was looking pretty green. It was a ridiculously short walk home but we decided to get a tuk-tuk anyway. Within a few seconds Scott was getting off to throw up onto the grass verge of another restaurant. Oops! Not sure we will be welcome around these parts again!
We got the kids ready for bed asap and then went to bed ourselves, hoping to feel better in the morning. It was a tough night. Scott woke up twice to throw up, Jakey's diaper got so full it leaked onto his pajamas so I had to find him new ones, and Kyla wet the bed for the first time in the whole four month trip so far. I ended up having to flip her mattress over and do some fancy sheet folding to find a dry part. Crazy night! While travel has lots of highs, it definitely has its challenges too, but there again, that's just normal life with

I thought being a parent required a lot of patience but this beats it! a two-and four-year old!
