... read more

The ultimate Beach Party Imagine a pristine beach about 3 km long with white soft sands embraced by the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, warmed by the tropical sun of Thailand. No deckchairs or umbrellas to spoil the view and no jet-skies (except the one of the life guards) in sight. There are no Hotels anywhere in sight, no high-rises, no road to cross to get to the beach, in short paradise on Earth. Does such a Nirvana still exist? Yes! And it gets even better. Igloo tents are nestled among the 80,000 square meters of palm trees and some house tents for those who seek more comfort. Gentle Caribbean inspired music fills the air without being obtrusive. A whiff of deliciously prepared Thai food originates from bamboo huts within the centre of ... read more

One of the things we had read about and saw pictures of before the trip was Khao Sok National Park, it looked amazing so we had to fit it in. We booked a 3 day, 2 night tour which started at about noon in the park, which is 3 hours north of Phuket. Rather than fitting in an early flight and drive out, we chose to break it up a bit and stay a night at Khao Lak, which is about an hour and a half north of Phuket. We arranged a pickup with our hotel, and were beachside by about noon, at what we later concluded was the best beach on our trip. The water was probably 80 degrees, nice white sand and relatively uncrowded. We spent the afternoon on the beach and watched the ... read more

Again sorry for the dashed off post and the lack of pictures, am planning a lot more free time in the next location of Bali. 2/3/10 Mike and Christophe finally showed up after James and I had dinner at a beer garden and got to sample many Northern specialities, "hmmmm" is all I have to say about that. While waiting for them we had a snooze and then we all went our for more food and Big Changs (the local beer) at a pavement restaurant then we continued to drink beer like there was no tomorrow, we went to bed at 4am. 2/4/10 Woke up hanging, had breakfast and made it a whole day of Northern Wats, met a monk who we helped with his English homework, drank lots of water and took lots of photos. ... read more

Hey all, since last writing we have travelled from Phuket up the coast a little way to Khao Lak a small beach town on the Andaman sea completely surrounded by jungle and mountains/hills. The journey was much the same as all our other ones involving several mini buses, one drops you in a lay-by where another is waiting. Once again all worked out perfectly and on time. We got a taxi from a town called Phagn-nga (not to be confused with koh Pha-nagn where we are headed next!) Most expensive taxi so far, about 20 quid (I should probably explain that I have no Pound sign on this stupid keyboard! It’s set up wrong so I keep writing ‘quid’ a lot!) but pretty cheap as it was an hour and a half drive, all through the ... read more

We'll im back-tracking because I havent gotten around to updating.. so lets see........Well we left Northern Thailand which was quite tragic really. We both liked it so much. The food was amazing and the people were great. Thai people are unlike any other. they are very soft spoken, polite, and modest. (which is interesting given the fact that Thailand has such a bad reputation for prostitution) That reminds me....Gambling is illegal in Thailand...but... you can play the lottery.....hmmmm..anyway...im getting off topic.... we left Chiang Rai and arrived in Phuket at about 6PM....and then we drove about an hour to Khao Lak where I was suposed to finish my diving certification in the Similan Islands. The Similans are suposed to have some of the best diving in Thailand (arguably the world) so naturally I was chrushed when ... read more

Are we in Thailand? Thursday 26th March 2009 Khao Lak is one of those places that could be anywhere. Full of mostly German tourists, pizza restaurants and “Happy Hour” bars. Travel guide books usually give an accurate impression of a place, but not this time. Our “Lonely Planet” unfortunately is rather old and other guides are misleading. We envisaged this area to be similar to Ao Nang (we wish we had stayed there longer) without the limestone crags but with a mountainous backdrop instead and similar Thai bungalow huts fringing a sandy beach. Well, the mountainous backdrop is here, but so too are large package-tour resorts and kids who should be in school back in Europe. Oh well, can’t get it right every time! The Khao Lak National Park, which we came through on the journey ... read more
