After leaving Phi Phi we made our way to Khao Lak, which would be our jumping off point to Surin Islands National Park. Surin Island NP is made up of 5 separate islands but visitors are only allowed to stay overnight on one island. Accommodations are limited to either renting a bungalow or a tent from the parks service, both of which are very basic. We rented a fan bungalow but don’t let the term bungalow lure you into thinking it was the lap of luxury or anything. The room was pretty basic and we only had electricity in shifts during certain hours which helped to make nighttime interesting … but more on that later. The Surin Islands Initial impression… the Surin Islands are beautiful (I don’t use that word much). As our boat approached the ... read more

Really hard mattress so not a great nights sleep. I was told that the reason they have such hard mattresses is because most thai people are poor farmers and sleep on the floor with just a blanket beneath them and as such can't sleep on a soft bed. Well, that was in cambodia but I am guessing the same is true for thailand. The start of todays ride was really good. Flattish roads through jungle scenery. My pace was up about 5km/h from when I started riding. I was a little worried that I was going to pay for the extra speed by hitting the wall at the half way point. My worries where sort of justified and at the 53km mark I got a stabbing pain in my back where my injury is. Uh oh, ... read more

Started off with brekky and lay on the beach for a bit – looked a bit like rain so headed down the beach and had a thai massage – haven’t had this particular one before – geez! It was mostly pummelling, squeezing, pushing and stretching – couldn’t relax as I kept wondering what the hell was coming next! Felt a bit like I had done a work out by the time I finished…. Don’t think I want another one of those too soon. Still didn’t look particularly beachy weather so we headed into town to get hair cuts…. Found a hairdresser – had full head of highlights and cut and blow dry for the equivalent of 27AUD!! Ok – so it is a bit short… had a bit of trouble with the English again, but happy ... read more

6th – 10th Jan We got to the dive shop at about 8pm and after leaving our cases and ‘waluables’ (as they call them here) in the safe, we crammed ourselves into two mini vans (with the usual chaotic driving) for a 1.5 hour trip north to board the dive boat. It was actually better not to see where you were going – the poor dude in the front passenger seat nearly crapped himself many times! We boarded the boat at about 10pm and left the harbour for the Surin Islands. We had one of the only two double bed cabins on the boat and were really chuffed with it – the other cabins were bunks and one deck below us and not as comfortable as ours. Despite that, none of us slept well and rose ... read more

Don't have a Khao We were back on the road and ready for adventure after our week long love affair with Chiang Mai. The land-locked portion of our trip was coming to an end, and while the mountains and jungles were a treasure to discover, the beach was calling our names. We had to make a few short stops along the way, but for us, it was beach or bust. The night train pulled in to bustling Bangkok around 7:00 a.m. We had the day ahead of us to explore the city before returning to the station for our overnight bus to southern Thailand. We maximized our day by visiting the famous Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, which is said to represent Buddha during his enlightenment as he approached death. The house of ‘Original Thai Massage’ ... read more

So… if you want to make sure you don’t miss your flight, you need to get to the airport early, but maybe not 6 hours early (especially to a domestic airport!) Ok – so the theory was that we would try to catch an earlier flight but to cut a long story short, and a big wet raspberry to Qantas for messing us around, we walked the length of the airport a few times to waste time before sitting at a café for a many hours until check in so that we could get into the Qantas lounge! For reasons only know to Qantas, we were boarded onto a very uncomfortable Jetstar flight to Darwin, had to pay for food and drinks and landed a very long time later at Darwin. This is equivalent to you ... read more

Hi Everybody, we are back from diving (Its me Trevor typing first, just in case you cant tell the difference between my typing and Courts) So I will start from leaving ko lanta to khao lak, so khao lak is where our live-aboard departed from (or as we would find out where the dive shop was located) we had to take a van from ko lanta to krabi and then another one from krabi to khao lak. khao lak is just north of Phuket. So the bus ride to krabi was fine but then the bus to Khao Lak happened, well it was twisty twisty roads with high speed driving complete with a lack of A/C that resulted in some of the most nausea inducing couple of hours ever (so we thought). We finally arrived at ... read more
