Last week I went up to Chiang Mai and Pai in the north of Thailand for a week. Chiang Mai is a very popular city on the backpacker circuit, though I reserve judgement. It’s terribly polluted, just like Bangkok, and its kind of like Khao Sanh but bigger - ie. lots and lots of backpackers with braids and fisherman’s pants and a few Thai people. I wasn’t that taken with it during the day - due to pollution and prevalence of ugly buildings - but quite liked it at night. However, I didn’t leave the touristy areas of Chiang Mai city and three days is too short a time to judge a place. Apparently the pretty areas are the parts of town where the tourists don’t go… go figure. The first day I went up to ... read more

We woke about 5.30am, because the roosters were making too much noise. After breakfast, we gave all of the children a small gift. Then we say goodbye, and got some mini-trucks to the river. We all got onto bamboo rafts and went down the river. Some of the rafts began to fall apart. We all had a turn rowing the rafts, and a lady from another raft accidently hit me in the head with a piece of bamboo. Stupid cow! It hurt so much. After the rafting, we decided to go Bungy Jumping, because I had said a few days earlier that I had wanted to do it. So Trung said he would do it with me. When we got there, I got talking to some Israelis who told me that it was awesome. I was ... read more

We went back to Bangkok, and then got a mini-bus to Ayuthaya. On the way there we stopped and looked at some of the rice fields. Once we were there we went for a look at Wut Pra Maha That, which was really beautiful. It reminded me of how a temple would look in Cambodia. We went back to the hotel, and some of us went for a little bit of shopping. After that we all went for dinner at a floating restaurant, and then got the overnight train to Chiang Mai. We bought some alcohol and some snacks, which kept us entertained for a few hours. Wendy kept telling us to be quite, but we didn’t listen, as it’s a holiday, so we are going to have fun, and its not like we are going ... read more

Like all great things, War and Peace, The Godfather triology, and Pee Wee's Playhouse, they must come to an end. So to is our trip to the east east coast. I do not say vacation because a vacation is a place you go to recharge your batteries. A trip is a mind-altering experience. Much like the druggies who take shrooms or acid to go on a different kind of trip. Danielle and I merely had to eat a hell of a lot of rice to go on this trip. It has been incredible and we have never even felt any side effects like the munchies or anything. *In Thailand, they have pictures of the king and queen of Thailand in various poses all over the country. At certain times, people stand up and the Thai anthem ... read more

We slept a few nights in Phitsanulok, from where we did some excursions. Phitsanulok served as the capital of Thailand for about 25 years. Sukothai is the original capital of the first Thai kingdom. It is one of Thailand's World Heritage sites. It was so huge that we used rented bikes to move from one part to another. There is a story about a general standing behind the Buddha statue, pretending the Buddha was talking to the troops, hence the name "talking Buddha". Wat Phra Si (the exact name is actually Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat) contains one of Thailand's most copied statues. In fact, afterwards we visited a small factory where bronze copies of that statue were made...... read more

I got to the bus station in Chiang Rai with 4 swiss guys and we got a Soungthew (shared Taxi) to Chian House - which was a wonderful place with a pool and very relaxed cafe. The swiss guys headed off to Laos early the next morning, when at breakfast I met up with 4 Canadians and we went horse riding for the day: First we got taken to the army base, where we picked up the horses. I had only been riding once before, but after my travels I have become pretty confident with things, even if I don't know how to do them. We had a great day riding by the river, and climbing up many steps to a Stupa on a hill. I was trying quite a lot to get my horse to ... read more

The bus to Chiang Mai was interesting. I met a couple of fun Australians (one was originally from Fulham) and we commandeered the back seat. The bus had suspension problems for much of the way, and we ended up coasting along the motorway for what seemed like large sections towards the end of the journey, even up some hills - we must have had enough momentum... Upon arrival in Chiang Mai I got a nice room at an eco guest house and walked about a bit. It was still a little hectic for me after the different peace of India so I just stayed one night and headed on to Chiang Rai on the way to Laos. Bangkok was quite freeky after my wonderful time in India.... read more

Geo: 18.8, 98.98what else does Thailand has to offer... indeed a nice relaxing place to be in...It was. Generally, the 90's was the time to be there...Well...Guys been there in the 70's, 80's told me actually that was the time I should have been there... Judging from everything I have experienced, I simply believe such statement. Only one thing I can say today...2016...It's to late, don't bother any longer trying to find the true Indochina...It's not there anymore. Thailand is a bit like Majorca...Everyone goes there to party...not to mention the flights from Europe are almost as cheap as flying to Majorca... 99 EUR one-way from Berlin...Ok guys...My final very valid statement... I have absolute beautiful memories of my life in Bangkok in the 90's, but it's finish...I am done...I have left Thailand for good a ... read more

The lorry dropped us of, literally, in the middle of nowhere and we started our trek. After about three hours, which were not particularly strenuous we arrived at the small Karon village in which we would spend our first night. The meal was basic but filling. We thought up ways to keep ourselves entertained (there was no TV or electricity out here) until we all settled down on the floor to sleep, shitting ourselves at the slightest sound which could, potentially, be some huge great creepy-crawley coming to get us. Just before we all settled down a guy staggered in, off his head with a half empty bottle of whiskey. The villagers whispered to us as he arrived, "Mr Whiskey, he drinks Whiskey!" We were all woken up at half five by a cockerel giving it ... read more
