Oy my god I am having so much fun here! Have just returned today from my three day jungle trek to the mountain hilltribe villages. One of the hardest and most rewarding things I have ever done. Now that Iam finally clean again (I didn't know it was possible to be that dirty and smelly!) we have gone out for a night on the town in Chiang Rai. Went to Tipi bar and (once again) got really drunk. I have drinking more in the pat three weeks than I have in the past three years, I think. That's not even an exageration, I swear. Wass just browsing through my previous blogs and realized how much I have done and experienced in such a little time, and know that I am lucky. Loving it all! Will update ... read more

Hello there everyone!!! This email is going to jump around a bit....SO pay attention-wink! Our first night in Ayutthaya we were laying on our mattresses on the floor and reading through someone elses Thailand book....Top 39 things to do...one of them listed was a tour through the Khao Yai national park in the city of Pak Chong (which happened to be not too far from Auytthaya) so we looked into it- the cost was right and the promise of seeing wild animals -BOOK IT! We were however a little concerned after Ashley googled the park and read someones travel blog that outlined on his trip a king cobra and python were seen on the street and that they got charged at by a wild elephant!!!??? oh and the night part takes us to see millions of ... read more

OK, I'm sure everyone has assumed that by now I've given up updating my blog because I'm so far behind. Well, I haven't. I've actually been working on this entry on and off for more than two months whenever I've had the chance. I hope you all enjoy it! :) Even before I started my travels in September, I knew I had to do more than just see sights, take pictures, and just generally live a life of leisure while visiting exotic countries. I wanted to give back, if only in my small way, to as many places as I could manage while still allotting enough time to do the conventional backpacker thing. To that end, before I started my trip I arranged four short-term volunteer projects in four different countries over the ten months I'll ... read more

As anybody who knows me or has glanced through any of the previous blogs knows, I am in Thailand for the benefit of the local community through both spending money here and teaching in the local school. While school is out however, I have little more than a financial benefit for the community, something that digs at me. It’s been really nice then that in the last week I have been involved in two community projects. The first was helping in the construction of a library for a local school (not the one I teach at though) with a group of students on their interim week from Island School in Hong Kong. Aside from working on the library during the day this experience was special as we were staying in a Lamu tribe around 3kms up ... read more

Went on a trip today and it was brilliant, much much better than Monday. It was to northern Thailand, including the golden triangle - where Thailand has borders with Laos and Myanmar (Burma). Got collected at about 7.30 for a joint trip i.e. people from other hotels had booked onto it. I was the last one to be collected and all the good seats were gone. Seriously! In a 10 seater van everyone had sat near the front and the only seat left was right at the back in the corner. I had to climb over everyone to get to it. The guide for the trip is called Oak (his nickname - it’s custom in Thailand for everyone to be given a nickname at birth, he did quite well sometimes it’s things like maggot! He was ... read more

Hye peeps, just a quick blog. We'er in Chiang Rai right now. It's a very nice little chilled out place and we've basically just been chilling. There are lots of nice Wats here and a great Hiltribe Museum - will tell you about it next time as we are off to visit more tribes in Loas. There is also a nice night bazzar which has live thai folk music all night. It's the kind of place my parents would like I think. Tomorrow morning we're off to Laos. A bit scary at the moment because our guide book is crap and we don't have any currency- this isn't our fault. Apparently everyone uses thai baht in Loas and so no one here will change money into Laos Kip. Anyway it should be fine. I'll blog again ... read more

Chaing Rai is a nice place in Northern Thailand with a small town atmosphere - that was my first impression as we alighted from the express bus from Chiang Mai. As we collected our bags from the baggage hold, a great cacophony started up. It sounded liek someone had plugged a little transistor radio into an immense amplifier and cranked the volume up to full. Joyous music, sounding a bit like a song from one of those old Technicolor kids' musicals like "Oliver" started to play. Nobody seemed to think it was all that strange. In fact, I noticed that nobody was doing much of anything. Jen cottoned on first (slow me!). "It's the national anthem," she whispered, "we're supposed to stand, right?" Yup. That's what the guidebook told us in the etiquette section. After a ... read more

During the stay of Chinese International School, the first school of the season, I was invited on the regular 6 hour hike through the hills around Fang. The hike takes in Lamu Hill Tribe villages, a great cave as well as rivers, waterfalls, hot springs (optional) and grassland. Following the early start, most people didn’t feel like eating at breakfast. I, however, am blessed with the ability of eating as and when food is placed in front of me and with the trek in mind I had no trouble summoning some appetite. It’s nice being able to build up a rapport with some of the groups and the kids seem to be friendly without exception (though some were grumbling come the end of this particular day). My role as an honorary instructor was to stay in ... read more

It looks like Rachel took the (good) weather with her back to Leeds and kindly left us in the monsoons of Bangkok in September, yes the rainy season has arrived good and proper. The monsoon style down pours have to be seen to be belived. The major problem with this is that Bangkok being the 'Venice of Asia' ie built on a whole load of canels, it is very close to sea level and when it rains many of the streets and buildings, particularly next to the river are flooded. And like Venice, the whole place is sinking apparently which is a rather depressing. By the way it appears we have neglected to mention that there has been no obvious signs of the coup in Bangkok (or anywhere else we have been in Thailand), so all ... read more

It seems that the frequency of my updates has a direct correlation to the amount of activity deserving of documenting in this way. Having showed up at school Monday and Tuesday morning half expecting to be teaching (after being told the holiday started on the 10th which seemed strange but not beyond the realms of possibility out here. Into the classroom of darkness as Joseph Conrad may have put it) but alas the only sign of life on the school site was some students in civvies throwing fire crackers at each other, a clear sign I felt that there was no official supervision. I should however skip to the weekend preceding this. While distracted by the tedium of the England game in a bar we’ve started to frequent as a change to Bamboo Bar, Bas and ... read more
