Rolling Down the River We woke at 6am to catch a bus north to the town of Tha Ton. Capri said the scenery was quite beautiful, however, Jarrod and I missed a fair bit because we were snoozing. Just a brief stop in Tha Ton for some noodle soup and we then boarded a long-tailed boat down the river to the city of Chiang Rai. The boat was full of other tourists, 12 people and luggage to be exact, and water was lapping a mere few inches away from the rim of the boat. The first few minutes were pleasant enough with the wind ruffling though our hair and the odd sprinkle of water over the side to keep you cool. But suddenly, the boat hit a dead head with a THUMP and my heart suddenly ... read more

Went to the border region and the golden triangle yesterday, just forgot to write it in because i was writing about the trek. We had a lot of time in the minibus which was god for the girls from our trek that were on the trip with us because theyt'd got in at 5.30am and the trip started at 7am! We went on a speed boat over to Laos and saw a monkey and a bear and some little crafty places. We saw some hot springs and some temples (quite a few and cant remember athe names off the top of my head) but they were all lovely, it was the kings birthday yday so there was alot of people off work wearing yellow tshirts and fireworks in the town, i think theres a procession tonight ... read more

Today we took a songthaew up to the Burmese border and crossed over to Burma. Only had a couple of hours there, so jumped on a tuk-tuk and whizzed around a few sights close to the border town. Similar to Thailand, but poorly kept. Couldn't tell if they drove on the right or left side of the road. In the end decided that they simply chose the side with least potholes!! A can of Myanmar beer was consumed to celebrate our two hours in Burma (Myanmar), before crossing back into Thailand. At the Golden Triangle we could see Burma, Laos and Thailand at the Mekong river. The nearby opium museum explained the history of opium, being brought to the hillsides of these countries from the mediterranean, and its various uses and abuses throughout the years. The ... read more

Well the time has finally come to depart from the refuge. One of the workers at the refuge needed to go to Chiang Rai so we decided we may as well make use of the free ride and move on. For this leg of our journey however we have gained a third Dangleberry, his name is George 'Chip' Harrison and he's from Deep South Alabama. However don't hold that against him, he may love his Kentucky Bourbon but he's still up for a bit vino with his pizza, beer with his pool and margarita's in the afternoon. As you can probably tell from the pictures we used our time in Chiang Rai to relax and do pretty much nothing other than eat and drink, the three of use were so keen for pizza and wine after ... read more

Thee roosters proved difficult to ignore, so an early start was compulsory. Not quite so bright eyed or bushy tailed we rose for breakfast with our host. For a change, we had pancakes and eggs. The local Doi Chaang (Elephant Mountain) tea was popular. After brekky and a quick trip to the market we were invited to join the locals at their Rice Ceremony. Essentially, a church service to pray for the rice crop they had harvested. We were then asked to join them for lunch. Although not long after breakfast and guaranteed to involve vast quantities of rice, I was quite happy to eat again! A late departure from the village saw us leaving in the midday heat. Very hot and without shade, but the trek was downhill all the way (nearly!). Very satisfying to ... read more

At the Lisu village, joined the children in school. First played with the youngest children. Taught them the Hokey Cokey (having argued with Aussies and Americans that it was NOT the hokey Pokey!!). Taught a few of the older children some English in one of the few classrooms. Even had to sing!! Hahaha! Poor children. Played volleyball. The school field had the best view of any I think I've ever seen. Absolutely incredible scenery surrounding the village. Started the trek across the ridge of the hill to the second village. Here we stayed in a traditional Akha hut. This was more rustic and more similar to the actual huts the village people lived in. Village faced the other side of the mountain, so this village was great for a spectacular sunset! Got dark by 7pm. No ... read more

Took an E-tan (farmer's truck) from the homestay as far up the mountain as we could go before getting out and walking. SOme porters from the local village met us there to carry some peoples rucksacks. It wasn't proper trekking without a rucksack on my back....so I carried my own. The trek followed steep paths up through the jungle of northern Thailand. Lunch consisted of rice and omelette, wrapped up in banana leaves. We continued trekking until we reached the Lisu village. stayed in a local hut, run by the PDA.... read more

Our first stop on the way to Chiang Rai was Ayuthaya. We took a tuk-tuk round to see all the sights - ancient temples and "chedi", bell-shaped treaure troves where kings and past rulers have been buried inside. We then took a bus from here to Sukhothai (rising happiness) - it was only a six hour journey so not too bad. We were the only non Thai people on the bus - a grandmother was walking her restless grand-daughter up and down the aisle, when she reached us the little girl wanted to get up on my lap, where she was smiling and touching my face..she then noticed Sam out of the corner of her eye and promptly burst into tears! Sukhothai has an old town consisting of many temples and historical sites which we biked ... read more

Last time I updated my blog I was relaxing in a cool internet bar, happily getting drunk and blissfully unaware of the pain and torture that I was to endure the next few days. Well, okay, pain and torture might be a little strong, but that's what it felt like at the time. Pain. Torture. Dirty, stinky, smelly, hot, sweaty, and above all TIRED OF WALKING UP HILLS. Having said that, I will now add that my jungle trek to the hillside tribes was also exhilerating, wonderful, and happy. And such a sense of accomplishment at the end! I felt freaking great! Now for the play by play. Day Zero Transferred from Chiang Mai to our overnight homestay in a nearby village. A wonderful, relaxing day and evening, spent with the kids of the village, and ... read more

Yes, the year here is 2549 owing to the Buddhist Calendar but there are no spaceships or time machines here, just good old tuk tuks and local buses with swirly fans. And it was via both of these means that we began our journey on the same day as leaving the forgettable Pakbeng in Lao to Chang Rai. For some unknown reason the first 5km of the journey were driven at about 3kph but once the driver had found 2nd gear with a crunch we cruised our way through farmland to our destination. Parting company at the bus station with Phil and Kate we haggled a price on a tuk tuk to the Akha Riverhouse, an out of town but beautiful collection of small riverside bungalows with en suite bathrooms. After a well deserved shower we ... read more
