This weekend I was visited by my mum who came out to Chiang Mai as an avoidance tactic of some sorts from a paradigm shift at home. Little Lu Lu my sister has just started at Bristol Uni so dad took a long weekend down there to see her off OK and pop by the Hawthorns. When I told the guys here (all European) that she was only coming out for a weekend they gawped in astonishment before I explained it was no biggy at all from Hong Kong, even with the new Bangkok airport still having some pretty critical issues. For those reading this with no experience of Chiang Mai. It is culturally rich with 13th century walls surrounding the old part and a sprawling suburban landscape beyond that. Within and directly outside the old ... read more

(we've added a few bits to the previous entry too) It took 3 hours to get to Chiang Rai on the bus as we had to drive through so many mountains. We arrived here late afternoon. It's very nice, a lot like Chiang Mai but smaller. There's not much to do here. We had planned to visit the long neck and big ear tribe here but then we found out that they are burmese refugees who are exploited by tourism companies. Even though the tradition of wearing the brass rings on their necks to make them longer was dying out they are forced to do it to attract tourists and bring in money. We went to the night market here which was pretty small but we had a really nice meal. Olly decided to get a ... read more

Although I’ve been playing footie about 2 or 3 times a week with Will and his mates, today I am to start a competitive game between the Maekok resort staff and teachers from schools in the local area, my first start in a full game for about 6 years. Not sure how long it’s been since I finished a game I started but it’s been even longer still. My fitness is fine but I feel that although tanks in Bangkok didn’t insight a fist raised in anger from the Thai people, a firm European style slide tackle might insight rioting in the streets. Following this there is a staff party in the resort as a pre-Songkram (sp?) Festival - for which I think I get a month off school - knees-up. Needless to say I’m not ... read more

It’s been quite a weekend of all sorts of activities. The new recruits arrived on Wednesday and the last on Thursday so the weekend has been spend acclimatising them to some of the team building activities, the sights and sounds as well as, well the climate. It’s been a combination of baking hot or biblical downpours with little in the way of middle ground. It’s been so extreme that when Will proclaimed (not for the first time) that he thought it would rain soon with not a cloud in sight, we were (for the first time) wary to mock him. Among the past few days’ activities have been rock climbing, driving and hiking to a series of gorgeous waterfalls in order for James to scope some potential climbing spots, a full day yesterday spent doing all ... read more

Wow, I bet all my teachers back at Manchester Uni are so jealous I’m here! Probably not for that matter as things have mercifully been very calm since the army took control of the TV and radio as well as the national government. The general in charge has said that he will step down after two weeks. I’m sure those outside of the Thai army will share my unease at this promise coming from a man who just rolled tanks into government buildings after a failed assassination attempt on Thaksin last week. There’s no doubt that Thailand is on the edge of a precipice with many potential benefits and problems in store for the people. Anything from a military dictatorship (highly, highly unlikely) to a totally free and fair democracy is possible. However, as it will ... read more

The wall is now only in need of some paint in some areas and 2 or 3 more boards fitting and then we can get on with planning the climbing routes. I say we but actually it’s going to be James who’s a proper legend round these parts while I think of a design to decorate the wall and a way of doing it. We were going to get students from the school involved in the artwork but in the interest of saving time, it’s probably best if we do it ourselves. It’s the ‘Random’ festival in Thaton at the moment where the people from the area come to the temple and leave baskets of food, money and other bits and bobs for the monks. The donations are all numbered and then each monk draws a ... read more

Despite a start that indicated to the contrary, today was a rather eventful day. All lower school were out on a field trip today (which I would have appreciated being informed about but no matter) which meant that I had no official obligations to fulfil. Instead I headed into the resort to see if my services would be of any use to the crew there (now numbering one more since the return of James) who I knew were in the throws of refitting the climbing wall since some modifications to it. The process seems like it will be at first tedious then arduous. First a dozen or so sheets of old waterproof ply have to be repainted (a surprisingly fetching and elegant grey) and affixed to the wall. Then due to a shortage of ‘t’ nuts ... read more

I’m afraid I’m being rather naughty at the moment and writing this entry in my lunchtime at school. I have been having some problems with my pratom 5 group in getting them to understand simple left and right instructions. Seeing as only a handful of the large group understand what I would like them to do, I’m pretty sure that it’s at least partly down to my style and inexperience. However, even with a shift in tactics today and getting them to interact more with the simple 6 block map I drew for them in order to teach them first/second left/right turn there’s still a proportion unable to complete the questions. I even went so far as to write the sentence with the gaps for the words only to come back and find them either ignored ... read more

Well I always knew when signing up for this project that things weren’t going to be plain sailing the entire way. Part of its appeal was the challenges it presented both from the new experiences and the isolation from everything familiar (though as I write this I have to comforting musical swells of the West Wing theme playing in background). The weekend was a real mixture of highs and lows. I had a really good time on Saturday evening watching the football with Bas and Will along with some of the other guys who work at the resort. Although Will was quiet at the Liverpool result, I was quite jovial at the West Brom score though and watching the game with the guys was class. The grindingly slow pace of Sunday was rather depressing though. I ... read more

It’s been and almost unendurably slow day. I didn’t sleep well on the previously mentioned firm bed though it has moved the previous stiffness to a more manageable location for which I am somewhat grateful. Spent a seeming eternity on the internet this morning (more likely a couple of hours given my late rising) as a way to kill time while also cowardly attempting to surround myself with the familiar until ThaTon feels more like a home for me. I did however venture for an hour or so down the tracks behind the farm in order to scope out some running tracks. Mouse droppings found in my room today: 9 (7 under the mattress, 2 in the bathroom). Not a record by any means but it did slightly counteract the extent to which I’ve grown comfortable ... read more
