Before leaving for our next village, we stopped by the village school, gave gifts of pencils and notebooks to the teacher and learned a little about why kids there go to school and their chances of going to university. Most families are farmers and wish their children to stay and help, so education beyond primary school is not valued as we do. But, if children wish to go on to high school, they must live during the week in the city and be brought by truck back and forth on the weekends. Most families do not have money for this, so many kids do not go to school beyond the age of 10/12. Other than the teacher and one woman who was asked by our guide to let us see the inside of her home, we ... read more

On Dec 30, 2006, we took an early bus from Pai to Chiang Mai. Gary got a seat at the very front of the bus and took a lot of pictures. It was a very misty morning, but the sky cleared up as soon as we left Pai and ascend to the mountain. The scenery is beautiful from the mountains top as the valley are covered by fog. Half the way to Chiang Mai was hilly and winding roads. On the way when we pass the national park that we failed to get to the previous day, the bus pick up a beautiful Thai girl and her name is Amp, a fourth year drama student in Bangkok University. Her English is very good and gave a lot of good information to us. We arrived at 12:30 ... read more

My main concerns this morning were to make sure I got a good shower since I may not be able to bathe for a couple days and wondering if my Chronic Fatigue will be an issue on this trek. Here is the outline of what we are supposed to expect: Day 1 - 14 kilometers, all uphill - a 1300 meter climb; stay the night in an Akhu/Lisu combo village Day 2 - 6 kilometers, some uphill - a 700 meter climb; stay the night in an Akhu village Day 3 - 10 kilometers, all downhill, sometimes steep; van ride back to Chiang Mai for hot showers and real beds!!! I am really only worried about making it the first day, so I hired a porter to carry my packpack. I am sure glad I did! ... read more

When we arrived back to our hostel after the trek, we were having a few drinks when this crazy thai guy from one of the hostels came up and sat next to us. We had a bit of a chat to us and started getting more and more angry as the night progressed. He finally snapped and had a go at all of us for being dirty westerners (amoungst other things). With a bit of help from a massive Welsh guy and his wife, the crazy cat was cast out onto the streets and the gates were locked. P.S i wouldn't really trust the police there as they said to us that they would arrest this guy but someone translated for us that they were going to drop him around the corner and have a laugh ... read more

An easy bus ride from Chiang Mai brought us to another great Northern Thai city, Chiang Rai. We arrived mid-afternoon and after some minor hunting arrived at Ben's Guesthouse, a lovely old teak structure with intriquicately carved eaves. While having a beer in the garden, we were very lucky to meet a young expat from Chicago, Carrie, who lived at a neighboring residence. She had been living in Thailand for a year or so and had done some travel to Laos, peaking our interest as the locale was next on our itinerary. Her greatest wish was to visit the Bokeo Nature Reserve and partake of the Gibbon Experience. A well-loved and slightly tattered brochure was given to us and we saw about setting up an excursion. More about that later. By foot, we cruised into town ... read more

I separated from the herd today and stayed in Chiang Rai while the rest of the tour group went to Myanmar. I'm sure Myanmar is a cool place to visit, but I wanted a little time to explore on my own. Chiang Rai is the perfect size for pedestrian exploration. I was able to walk all around the city. I walked through the huge market area, visited three wats, spent some time at an Internet Cafe catching up on email, had a foot massage, visited with a monk, bought a pretty silk skirt and shirt set, hung out with ex-pats at a little German bar, and finally caught up with the group when they came into town for dinner. It was a great day. ... read more

On the way to Phayao, we stopped to watch some rice workers in the field. I tried my hand at cutting the rice, much to the amusement of the workers. I guess I'd better stick with my day job. We took a coffee break at Phayao, a lovely little town near a beatiful big lake. Ole said that families liked to picnic there. One of the town specialties is "jumping shrimp". Little shrimps are collected from the lake. They are mixed, ALIVE, with cilantro, garlic, lemongrass and chilies. One then scoops up the mixture and gets it into the mouth before the shrimp jump off the spoon. I was not as brave as some of my fellow travelers. I like my shrimp scampied.

Sawasdee ka (--that means hello in Thai)! The word of the day is chang, and chang means elephant in Thai. This morning after a bit of a fiascoe at the hotel we (my guide Reaw, the driver, and myself) traveled to the Chiang Dao Elephant Camp (Dao interestingly enough means mountain in Thai--I wonder if it means the same thing in Vietnamese, as one of my former roommates was named Dao). The elephant were amazing (Nicki, I made a short movie that I am sure Barnaby will want to see.)! I had an opportunity to feed them bananas (I must say they have perfect size bananas in this region of the world)...and then ride on one for an hour. The gentle giants are quite amazing creatures...and I feel fortunate to have had a brief encounter with ... read more

Early start today, 6am. Jumped into the minibus which took us up to Chaing Rai. We didn't realise how far away it actually was, but its not like we have to watch our time.. Our first stop was a Hot Water Spring, the tour guide seemed quite excited about it, but it wasn't that impressive. Smelt of gone off eggs, sulphur. We recognised this from a trip to a volcanic rainforest years ago in Dominica. We headed off for a 3 hour drive to Chaing Rai city, stopping off on the way at a temple, which was very impressive, it was about 900 years old. Upon arrival in Chaing Rai we went to a place called the "Golden triangle", this is on the corner of Thailand / Laos / Burma. They are seperated by the Mekong ... read more
