Day 2 in Bangkok I must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. I took too long to dress up and got ticked off by Vivi again. Feeling that we have not seen enough of Jatujak (okay, okay, we haven't shopped enough), we went to the sweltering weekend market once more. Halfway browsing through some stuff, I lost sight of Vivi (*Sob, sob :( ). There was no way I could find her in this crowd, so I went ahead and shopped on my own. I overdid my shopping and ran out of Thai Baht midway through. I tried to find a currency exchange agency to no avail, so I popped into the tourist police office to ask for directions. Unfortunately, the tourist police doesn't understand any English and I ... read more

Day 1 in Bangkok We arrived in Bangkok at about 5am plus in the morning. Dropped off on the streets of Bangkok, in the middle of who-knows-where. Everyone was accosted by a bunch of vulture-like taxi drivers trying to have a piece of us. We ignored the drivers and stood by a quiet corner to think and assess where the hell in Bangkok were we at. We felt a bit lost, so we just followed some backpackers and wandered into Soi Chana Songkram by chance. Vivi found some of the names of the guesthouses familiar and flipped through the guidebook. And yes, we actually landed right on the lap of a popular backpackers' stretch - the West Bang Lamphu! Very lucky really, considered this is area we intended to stay in. Talking to other backpackers, we ... read more

“SHOP N SAVE” in Bangkok Shopping and eating were oftened touted as the top agendas for most tourists in bustling Bangkok. Our Asia Hotel was located 1 stop away from the majestic Mah Boon Kroong (MBK) Shopping Complex and a few stops to the Chatuchak Weekend Market in the northern suburbs. This was the age where money is everything and in Bangkok you could probably do this at a fraction of the prices back home. It was no wonder that the girls attempted a 2 day “bloodshed” at Chatuchak Market. I was there for ½ a day and was defeated by the scorching heat and the never ending crowds. The 3 of us took a sky train to Saphan Taksin before transferring to the River Boat to bring us to the Grand Palace compound. It was ... read more

So, I have finally arrived in Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanu Kamprasit, the city which so many of my fellow Swedes have already discovered. The flight lands in the early afternoon and the heat can be felt through the airport walls, and what is that strange smell? (The Don Muang air has a very special character that I've since come to appreciate more and more). After passing through immigration my friend Kay picks me up on her way back from the office, which is nearby. She's suggested and reserved a room for me at the Karnmanee Palace (a nice hotel which has since become a favourite stay of mine) where I can dump my bags and take a much ... read more

Journey to the Land of Smiles (25 - 29 December 2003) Part 1: Inspection Report 7 of us went to Bangkok during Christmas 2 years ago. It happened at the time when budget carriers were unheard of in Singapore. The cheapest flight then operated on graveyard hours by SAS. We were pushed all the way to the late 10.10pm flight on Christmas Day 2003. It was simply filled to the brim of eager Singaporeans intending to make a "bloodshed" in Bangkok. The Cheapest Flight (Scandinavian Airlines) The cheapest option didn't mean lousy. At least, SAS had proven that. Ok the ang moh stewardess who served us was clearly aging, the baguette served on board is well uninteresting. But at least there was edible food & we had our personal inflight entertainment within our own comfort ... read more

I returned to Bangkok, this time for five nights. Initially I had great difficulty finding the enthusiasm to do anything other than sleep or read, knowing that my time here was really just to fill in before I left for Singapore and my flight to Australia. However the day after I arrived was the King's Birthday, and in Thailand they really love their king. Around 2 million people had converged on the small park in front of the Grand Palace to hear the speech by the Prime Minister, watch the fireworks and enjoy - if that word can be applied - the Thai boxing. Not willing to look cowardly in front of two guys from my hostel, I joined them in making my way into the crowd. There were literally peoplecrushed against you in all directions, ... read more

From Kanchanaburi I travelled to Ayuthaya, a small city just north of Bangkok. Ayuthaya was once the capital of the Siam Empire - ( which I never got the dates written down so will add in later. Damn!! This is why I should write these at the time) Littered all around the city there were ageless ruins and Wats (temples) from this time, many destroyed by the Burmese before the fall of the Siam empire. It was strange to walk out of the traffic straight into the relative silence of a semi destroyed temple, and be faced by rows upon rows of Buddha statues built into the walls. Silent sentinals watching all. I say this - many had actually had their heads stolen or removed and put into museums to prevent this - it still felt ... read more

After two nights in Ko Pa-Ngan with a mixture of torrential rain, homesickness and overwhelming depression, I had decided to move on. I was fearing my necessary visit to Bangkok as I had heard that it was busier, dirtier and smellier than KL. It was, yet for some reason I really liked it there. Whether travel had hardened me, or whether Bangkok just has a great atmosphere I do not know. Walking down Khao San Road during the day was pretty interesting, but at night when the traffic is closed off it is an amazing sight. The street is filled with backpackers and travellers walking up and down, passing jugglers, street vendors, hawker and endless lights from the signs of bars and hostels - it has to be seen. Here is where westerners are a majority ... read more

We left Melbourne about 1.15am, and arrived in Phuket about 6.30am local time. It was pretty nice flying over Phuket, looking down on the small islands. As soon as we stepped off the plane we noticed how humid it was. I wasn't in the mood for humidity at 6.30am after a long flight. We didn't stop for too long in Phuket, just enough time to look around at the duty free shops and then get a drink. Then it was time to go to Bangkok. We arrived there about 8.30am, and the airport was pretty easy going. I was glad we had pre-arranged a taxi to the hotel. As soon as we were out onto the streets, I began to have flashbacks to Egypt. You know, cars driving all over the place, pulling into the other ... read more

Near Bangkok, there are other interesting places worth a visit. In the huge canal system surrounding Bangkok, there are several floating markets. We visited one of them, namely Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. When you see pictures of these markets on the internet, you usually see the wooden canoes filled with multicoloured fruits and vegetables, and the Thai women wearing straw hats. All this was nice to see, but I also remember seeing lots of tourists (including me of course ;-) touring at the canals. Some canoes didn't sell any fruit like in the old days, but sold souvenirs instead. So I fear a little bit the disappearance of the original character of this...
