Final Day (1 August 2005) The people of Taiwan are among the most friendly people on the planet & it's their hospitality that is perhaps the greatest asset of this remarkable island. ~~Robert Storey, Lonely Planet Taiwan We went back to Taipei again this morning after saying good bye to Danshui. Our final stop for the entire trip was at Shin Kong Mitsukuoshi Tower to catch a final glimpse of the city before we fly back in the evening. Taipei is very much like Singapore just 50% less crowded. The sky has been hazy since day 1 when we arrived. But I’m glad that our travel plans were not disrupted by the 2 typhoons that came and went before and after our trip. It’s a nice place to enjoy an idyllic afternoon with few visitors. ... read more

Day 7 (31 July 2005) Coming to the 2nd last day of our “Taiwan” Campaign. We left our hotel early today to visit the Miniature Museum so that we could be on time for check out. This place was recommended by I Weekly. Anyway, it was relatively small to justify the high cost of entry fees. And the golden rule applies - no picture taking. Of course we did smuggle a few shots from it because we won’t be doing ourselves justice if we left the place without any “memories”. The display was well nice right up to the final details. We left Taipei city to check into our final accommodation in See’s Revert Hotel in Danshui. Our accommodation “improved” by the day from the unforgettable Amigo Hostels right up to our final stop. It ... read more

Day 6 (30 July 2005) Reached Taipei in the afternoon & checked into Delight Hotel after much difficulty in navigating the confusing maze. Apparently, the room seems like a refrigerator, far too cold and the water heater was not working most of the time. We took a train to Shilin Official Residence. Reminds me of Istana back home though. Strangely, the building itself is unattractive & seems very rundown. But thumbs up for the landscaping - impressive. We took an idyllic rest at the Bear Restaurant next to the MRT station. Love the place and highly recommended. Night falls at Ximenting and we chose to dine at the Cola Restaurant. As a kid, was always fascinated by cola collectibles, so the place suits me despite the typical American foods and seemingly lack luster service. The ... read more

Day 3 (27 July 2005) The MRT train from our hostel to Beitou took about 30 minutes. We met a fellow Singaporean on our way to the Hotspring Museum as we took the same flight with him two days ago. He was coming to Beitou to experience the outdoor hotsprings under the scorching 35 degrees summer heat. We didn't have the chance as they were closed for maintenance. What luck! After a quick lunch, we took bus 260 to bring us to Yangmingshan National Park at the outskirts. Armed with a pair of scandals I bought at Giant, we decided to hike our way to Cising Park. I had forgotten how long we took but I guessed it was really tough as the steps seemed endless. That evening, we finally made our way to Ximenting. (The ... read more

Day 2 (26 July 2005) The sun rose early in summer in Taipei. But we couldn't care less. It was close to 8am as we woke up. After a quick breakfast, we headed straight to the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall to pay respect to Taiwan's one-time dictator. Completed in 1980, it took us 89 steps to reach the Main Hall where an hourly change of guards was taking place. Our next destination was Taipei Main Station where we roamed around the Taipei Underground Mall . Lunch was at Mitsukoshi Departmental Store where we were greeted by the ladies manning the elevators to B1. We roamed around the neighbourhood before crossing the road to the 228 Peace Park and the National Taiwan Museum. The scorching heat took a toll on me and I caught some sleep ... read more

Day 1 (25 July 2005) "Only 1 bed for 2 of us!" Our flight left Singapore Changi International Aiport on the afternoon of 25 July 2005. Amidst the turbulence, we landed safely in Chiang Kai Shek International Airport in Taipei 4.5 hours later. The airport bus took slightly more than an hour before we reached Taipei city. With little difficulty, we managed to board the evening crowded MRT train (Jie Yun) which would bring us to our hostel in Yung Ho District. It was 7pm when we managed to check into our accomodation @ url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g1432365-d1441171-r48734727-Amigo_Hostel-Taipei_County.html Amigo Hostel. This was going to be our home for the next 3 days in Taipei. There was only 1 super single bed. Roys look at me and we smile. We decided to head to the Miramar Ferris Wheel in Taipei ... read more

Hello from Taichung City. Its been roughly a week since I've arrived. Actually, one week to the hour. Yesterday went to Guguan, a mountain town about one hour east of Taichung on Hwy. 8. I am amazed at the silence that the town provides. Even as you are exiting the car, it is nothing but silence and the pestering sound of.... (can't remember the name of the insect. They also dwell in texas.) As you leave the parking garage, there is a 7-11 to the right. In front of you there is a hotel which provides access to hot springs... not exactly appealing to my sorts in this 90 degree weather. Down the street it is one restaurant after another. As you walk by each, the owner invites you in and pulls out a chair for ... read more

How exciting -- my FIRST overseas trip at the ripe old age of 26. We are headed to the United States via Taiwan. Well I will start this blog with another embarrassing first....... my first ride in a TAXI... yes you heard right, I have never been in a taxi. So I was even excited about that. And what a lovely taxi driver she was. She had 7 kids and told us all about them and how successful they were.. I think one was a doctor and a lawyer and the other children were following in the same path studying to be aswell. She made the trip to the airport worth the $30 and was happy to know that she was my first Taxi driver ever. She has certainly set the bar high for any future ... read more
