Our last day in Sri Lanka. We packed and lazed around Aditya Resort as we were going to be collected from the hotel at 2.30 pm. This seemed a silly time to go because our flight to Hong Kong was not scheduled until after midnight. Of course the airport construction project was still causing a balagan with checkin queues etc, so we agreed with Jagath's suggestion. At 2.30 pm we said goodbye to the beautiful hotel and to the amazing staff. I said to the manager that, apart from the bookkeeper/accountant we hadn’t seen any women workers in the hotel. All of the cleaners, waiters and gardeners were men. We were told that women could work but that they didn’t want to go home by themselves late at night. Basil, our original driver told us that ... read more

Today we had a really lazy start. We were packing up as Don and I were going to Galle and Caroline was going back home to Manchester. Her flight was scheduled for the late evening. Jagath was paranoid about getting her to the airport early. For some reason best known only to the government, the airport was closed all during the day time (and this was the height of the tourist season) for alterations and only open overnight when all the flights and checkin activities were crowded together. We lazed around the hotel finishing the Boggle competition and chatting. Today was the only day we had any serious political conversation. I am pleased to say that we are all mature enough (at last) to appreciate the others' views. Caroline won the Boggle tournament. In fact her ... read more

The day started at 7:30 am with a 3+hour jeep ride around Colombo. The hotel had packed us a breakfast to eat somewhere along the way. Nishantha Abeysekara, the owner of 'Colombo by Jeep' collected us at the hotel with one of the earliest versions of the British jeep which was built in 1948. He was particularly proud of his Land Rover series 1, and his fleet contains other similar jeep vehicles. The jeep was “wired” (like the way car thieves steal cars) and started by way of the wire and a key and a starter button. There were no indicators and Nishantha relied on hand signals! Also the wing mirrors were unusable because the windscreen was lowered flat onto the bonnet. Jagath joined us in our jeep. A second jeep carried another family and ... read more

Today we were happy to leave Castlereigh a day earlier than originally planned. We packed up and after a leisurely breakfast we set off to Colombo. En route Basil pointed out the largest bamboo trees which had been imported from Thailand. They are not so much tall as thick - very thick. The train journey on Sunday was very straight as trains don’t like bends and the line which had been laid by the British went through the mountain range. Not so the road which was very winding and full of S-bends and hairpin turns following river runs and mountain terrain. My knitting needles clacked faster and louder! The road was lined with tea plantations including the Carolina Tea Estates. So, being total tourists we stopped to take a photo of Caroline at the sign. Basil ... read more

We left Kandy on the early morning (6.15am) train which meant the stunning view over the first hour of the three hour trip had clear light with a nice misty covering. The descent is only about 400m but from the train you can see the taller mountains off to the south. We had booked our last night at a beach resort close to the airport , Negombo. Colombo airport is in the middle of a runway resurface. I read in the local paper this hasn't been done since 1986 and if it wasn't completed in 2017 then they would loose their accreditation to land International flights. This means the airport is closed from 8.00am to 4.30pm. Our flight back to India was scheduled for 3.00am! Negombo is a beach side tourist hang out so had some ... read more

Our flights began on Saturday night so motze Shabbat was a scramble to clean up and close the suitcases and start on our family trip to Sri Lanka. Caroline was already on her way from Manchester to Dubai when we checked in at Ben Gurion airport. Our first flight was to Bangkok. We took off on time and I slept for most of the way. We landed on time and then sat in the lounge for seven hours waiting for our second flight to Colombo. The plane was late coming in and so we were an hour late taking off. We had been told that Thai airlines was a great airline. Well the hostess uniforms were beautiful and that was as far as it went. The kosher meal was a grey looking chicken dish on rice. ... read more

The day awoke clear and hot. We didn't have a lot on our agenda before catching the train at 3:55pm so we decided the National Museum could be a good introduction to the history of Anuradhapura where we were destined. It proved to be awesome with a good coverage of the history of the various ancient seats of power in Sri Lanka's history. The omnipresent Buddhist faith scattered in amongst various rulers and races controlling the country painted a clear picture on how significant the religion is to most of the country. From the museum we went to an upmarket shopping complex that had been recommended. Shelley needed a couple of new tops as the Indian laundries had almost destroyed some of hers. Nice to sit down and order a flat white and a long black ... read more

We had a midday-flight booked and luckily we left early for the airport because we spent 20 minutes in a nose to toe traffic jam. Apparently some government official was heading to the airport so lots of streets blocked to allow them passage. As with all things in India sitting and watching life go by thows interesting scenarios your way. As we were sitting in the International departure area a customer of the coffee shop wanted to use his credit card to pay for his breakfast. The coffee shop owner used his cell phone to contact his mate in the domestic departure area, separated from the international by some closed glass doors. The card was passed through a gap in the doors and taken to the other shop which had a window that could be seen ... read more

Geo: 7.20934, 79.8341We've had a great 2 weeks in Sri Lanka! The first week was manic as we had to fit in so many things in a short amount of time but we did it! So... Firstly we took a 5 hour train to dambulla cave temple which is a buddhist temple carved into and out of a mountain. We had to climb quite a few stairs in order to get there in the blistering heat but it was pretty cool once we got there! Then we rushed to Sigirya or 'lion rock' to (again) climb the stairs to the ancient palace ruins at the top and to see probably the most spectacular sunset/ view we have ever seen. The next day we travelled another few hours to Kandy where the following day we got on ... read more
