Returning to Colombo at the end of our holiday gave us a chance to catch up with friends who were themselves away on holiday when we arrived! The luxurious air conditioned coach from Galle had sped along an empty highway before dropping us off at the southern end of the city where a tuk tuk completed the journey to the Cricket Club bar where we had arranged to meet everyone. It was great to see Kaithe, Ted, Jenna and Lucy again after such a long time. After a great meal we went back to Lucy's flat which was to be our base for the rest of the trip. We were there to relax more than to explore, but with a short trip out to the southern suburb of Mount Lavinia, we were able to do both. ... read more

Our last day in Sri Lanka started with a breakfast overlooking the blue sea across the golden beach through Palm trees. We had seen amazing sites both Sri Lankan made and a British import (tesco). Time to reflect what a wonderful country Sri Lanka is. Our guide, Pradeep said it would only take no more than 30 minutes to drive to airport. But that same morning his holiness the Pope was arriving at our airport. We left our Hotel and encountered a traffic jam on the road to the airport. His holiness was on route to greet the people of Negombo there were cars, motobikes, cycles and hundred of people walking to see the Pope. Our driver was asking the locals for other routes to get to the airport and had to use all the back ... read more

Day 2 Sri Lanka Having had breakfast with views through the coconut trees and over the beach, we are greeted by our trusty guide Pradreep, and we drove to the Pinnawela elephant orphanage, home to 60 elephants. This has been operating for over 30 years nurturing calves and rehabilitating the injured. We saw about 30 elephants frolicing in the river. The environment at whipsnade seems so much better! Health & Safety at its best!!! We then travelled to the Central Province, but we encountered road works, well what can you say! The work force both male and female have to wear hard hats, and in some cases 2, some wear high viz, (tracey?) and some don't wear shoes, even though they are using a wacker plate to flatten the ground!! There's no organised traffic control timing, ... read more

So here we are again! 2 month trip around Sri Lanka to make up for my distinct lack of adventuring of late! Arrived in Colombo at 4am, planning to just get an airport taxi, but after asking at the info desk turned out the buses should start around 4.... Decided that was a little more adventurous and had time to kill before check-in anyway. Just out the main road to the left located a bus.... Constant 'no bus, no bus' on the way out.... Back in asia :) stopping, starting, honking, shouting wound our way towards Colombo. Happy to be back out again even if I had been up for hours an hours! Arrived in a bus stop at 5am still pitch black... Pointed me in the right direction, picking my way through people unloading huge ... read more

It was a long journey from Alicante to Colombo. We spent the best part of 24 hours on planes and in airports, changing in both Madrid and Doha (Qatar), before we emerged bleary eyed in to the humid heat of Sri Lanka's capital. We then pre-paid for a taxi to our hotel which avoided so much hassle. We had chosen the Best Western in Colombo for our first three nights simply because they had a great deal on offer and we needed somewhere comfortable to recover from the journey! $50 a night turned out to be a bargain looking at other options and we even got a free breakfast on arrival as we had a few hours to wait for our room to be ready. The rooftop bar where breakfast is served has wonderful views over ... read more

Contrary to popular belief, Colombo is not the capital city of Sri Lanka. The capital is Kotte a satellite city located beyond the Colombo city center. However, Colombo is a busy and vibrant metropolis and still remain as the commercial, industrial and cultural capital of the country with its mixture of modern life and colonial-era buildings. I was in Colombo the first time in 2008, but only in transit and saw the city for a couple of hours only. Then in October 2010, my friend and I decided to go there as part of our Sri Lanka/India trip. We booked on SriLankan Airlines but our flight was delayed for over two hours at Bangkok airport, so we arrived in Colombo much later than the scheduled time. However, the good service received on board the plane somewhat ... read more

Geo: 6.91845, 79.8489Time Check: 0642 Local: Up and poking about organising coffee. Status: Both coughing and spluttering! What appeared at first to be a mild cold seems to have mutated into Bird Flu. Were OK but "popping" cold capsules and pretending that we are shaking it off! Recap: Yesterday (Tuesday) we arrived early into Columbo and after a 2 hour snooze we head out and get stuck into local life. Unlike India, we are at once struck by a clean, gentle and friendly City. Columbo is undergoing a transition. Old Sri Lanka is rapidly being replaced by upscale hotel developments such as The Shangri La and expensive seafront condos! Since the civil war ended in 2009 the Country is undergoing a transformation. It still has a 1970's feel with remnants of the British Raj era woven ... read more

Today has been a day of firsts! I began the day by crossing the road on my own for the first time! Sounds simple but the traffic is crazy and I was previously only crossing the road by hovering near a local and waiting for them to cross! Secondly, I taught my first English lesson. I was told last night that I wouldn't be teaching today but assisting another volunteer with her lesson. However, when I turned up at the bus stop this morning the Sri Lankan co-ordinator who was taking me and another new volunteer turned to us and asked us if we had a good lesson plan ready! We were a bit shaken up but luckily we had some ideas from lessons we are teaching later in the week, but we didn't have a ... read more

Ayubowan everybody! This is the first word of Sinhala I learnt and its the polite way of greeting people. Often accompanied by putting your hands together and bowing your head. So this is my second blog post. Not going to ramble on too much because I'm in an internet cafe and I'm not sure how much its costing me! Its my fourth day in Sri Lanka and I've been craaaazy busy! I'm not allowed to say much about the places I'm working so this blog will be mostly about my life outside of work. I can say that I'm working at 8 placements that involve working with people with special needs or mental health problems or I'm teaching English. This week has been training and observing but next week I will be thrown in the deep ... read more

After breakfast, we had free time to enjoy, so I decided to explore around the neighboring. While hanging around, I found a massage facility. Some friends and I decided to have massage. It was my first time to take a real massage. It was awkward but really interesting. I could relieve my fatigues of my body. After then we had lunch at local sea food restaurant. I could have delicious meal in a view of nice beach. After lunch, we reached the turtle hatchery center. I could see countless number of little baby turtles were growing. They were so cute and tiny. I could only touch them which were 3 days year old. They were really lovely. Also, I could see much larger sea turtles. They were cool and beautiful. However, I could also see disabled ... read more
