From Bukit Lawang we went to the airport of Sumatra and took a flight to Jakarta. We just came out of the airport when we see the Ibis shuttle bus slipping away. And believe me we waited to hours in the dark for the next one. Finally it arrived and we had a good sleep. Next day we flew to the awesome Singapore airport and there was a connection tree IMAGES where you could play video games against people who were at the tree. Then we flew to Colombo ( Sri Lanka ) and waited another hour for our taxi to arrive and collect us at 2 o'clock in the morning! We didn't do much in the hotel apart from playing in the pool. Next day we took the train to the city which was -hundreds ... read more

In Colombo Fort Station we took a train to Anuradhapura for five and a half hours. We were in 3rd class so we were squished to death and the seats were rare. Luckily, after two hours of insane agony and torture standing up by the open door of the train, we found seats. It didn't change much of the feeling of the time of the journey but at least my legs were at rest. The trip was flat and not much towns passed by and finally we arrived and we took a tuk tuk to the Montana Rest hotel and my room had the world's poshest and biggest bathroom with two shower heads and a ton of gadgets. After that I got told off for watching youtube videos when I was supposed to be writing the ... read more

After two months on the road, we were looking forward to a relaxing couple of weeks in Sri Lanka and an opportunity to recharge the batteries. We started with a brief stay in the capital, Colombo. Having booked what we thought was a double room, we were surprised on arrival to be shown to a capsule (see photo). Relative to India, we found Colombo to be much more calmer and civilized. We had a leisurely stroll down Galle promenade where the locals were out flying kites and enjoying some of the treats from the food stalls. Poor Brad Pitt was devastated to be only stopped once for a photo. The two vegetarians were no where to be found when we stumbled across a TGIFridays on our first night there!! On to the main event, we took ... read more

I had asked many other tourists about Colombo and it seemed like nobody had anything nice to say about the capital of Sri Lanka. Everything we had heard was negative. People had told us that traffic was insane, that the city was noisy and polluted. We had also heard that it could be dangerous… My parents were even wondering whether it was worth stopping there. I was curious about the city, and I could not visit Sri Lanka without spending at least a day in the capital. So we kept it for the end of our trip, so that we would already have our Sri Lankan feet, that is to say we’d hope to be more familiar with the traffic, the local customs, the price of things… Well, it turns out that Colombo is a much ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling south-west from Kandy to Colombo. We woke early (5:30am), as we had a reasonably early start on the final leg of our Sri Lankan travels – we were leaving Kandy and heading back to Colombo. We organised our packs, walked a short distance along an old wood panelled corridor and found ourselves in Hotel Suisse’s sprawling breakfast area. I sat down to cornflakes, poached eggs, toast, jam, fruit juice and tea before checking out of our lakeside hotel. We jumped into our minibus and drove a short distance to Arthur’s Seat, which offers great panoramic views of Kandy and Kandy Lake. After taking our last few photographs of Kandy, we jumped back into the minibus and headed to Silk Gardens (a textile and garment factory outlet), where we quickly browsed ... read more

... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling north from Colombo to Negombo. We woke at 6:30am, which was remarkably early given the music from Colombo’s Street Food Festival played well into the early hours on the street outside our hotel. We used the remaining hours in our hotel room to catch up on our writing, as we were checking out at midday, grabbing some lunch close by and then travelling by Uber to Negombo, the start of our next Sri Lankan journey. We headed out for a late breakfast and found ourselves at Heladiv Tea Club in the Old Dutch Hospital courtyard for the second morning in a row. I opted for toast, jam, fresh pineapple juice and tea, while Ren went for the French toast, fresh mango juice and tea. The food was great, although Ren’s ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling north-west from Mirissa to Colombo. We woke early at 5:30am and caught up on our travel writing before heading down to breakfast. The food was good – the hotel staff must have noted our absence at meals. I had an egg roti, freshly cooked omelette, freshly squeezed juice and tea. After breakfast we organised our packs, checked out of Hotel Silan Mo, jumped into the minibus and hit the express highway for Colombo. We entered the outer suburbs (or “outer skirts” as our guide suggested) of Colombo about 11:30pm, and after spending 30 minutes in heavily congested traffic we arrived at the Independence Memorial Hall. We loved the calm atmosphere of this open air monument to Sri Lanka’s independence the first time we visited Colombo two weeks ago, and the ... read more

HE SAID... We’d arrived in Negombo at 11pm the night before, after a mammoth road trip from Kandy that took us south to Bogawantalawa and then north-west to this touristy beach town. We were exhausted, so we quickly scouted the streets outside our hotel (Rani Beach Resort) before crashing in our room. To describe our accommodation as a resort was stretching the truth just a little too far. It did have a pool and it was located on a beach, but that’s where its so-called ‘resort’ features ended. Maybe we were in an old wing – who knows? Anyway, enough about Rani Beach Resort. It was a place to stay, somewhere to eat. We had no idea where we were, or what Negombo was like, so we had a day of exploration ahead of us. We ... read more

HE SAID... After a comfortable flight from Singapore (just under four hours), we touched down at Bandaranaike International Airport at midnight. The airport is in Katunayake, which is 40 kilometres from Colombo. We had a reasonably quick transition through customs, although standing in a slow moving queue to get our passports checked and stamped was a little tedious in the humid midnight air. We made our way out of customs, found our pre-arranged transfer vehicle and sped off towards Colombo, arriving at our hotel (Taru Villas Lake Lodge) around 1:15am. A very tired hotel manager was waiting up for us, and after some preliminary paper work, he showed us to our room. The place was amazing, with heaps of room. We dropped our packs, showered and crashed at 2:30am. After just four hours’ sleep, we woke ... read more
