Today we begin our long journey home, but not until much later; we leave for the airport at 9.30 pm. First a day in hot, dirty, polluted Colombo. We decide to pay for another night at the hotel so we don’t have to check out until evening. After breakfast we plan a walk along Galle Face Green. It’s a British style seaside prom. There’s even a memorial from its opening by Sir Henry Ward in 1859 where it is ‘recommended to his successors in the interest of the ladies and children of Colombo’. Poor Henry would be turning in his grave if he could see it now; it’s a stinking mess of garbage and sewage and makes me long for the pristine beach of Bournemouth. Next we head for the lake, in theory. In practice, the ... read more

We get up from our damp, smelly bed in our hot, smelly room at 7 am, access WiFi and book another hotel. After a full and frank exchange of views with the receptionist about the state of the hotel, we check out and take a taxi to Colombo. By 11 am, we are checked in, showered and settle down for a couple of hours more sleep in clean beds. We wake to a message from Booking.com saying that Sea Port registered us as a ‘no show’ which means we can’t even post a bad review of our horrible experience. We get up and go for a walk following Lonely Planet’s suggestion for a ‘short stroll’. First point, a spot on the seafront to view pelicans perched on poles. It’s actually a huge construction site with no ... read more

We have booked flights to Colombo via Singapore but our first plane has been cancelled, meaning an earlier flight and a 9 hour layover in Singapore. One last attempt to liberate our laundry - thankfully it is open. She looks as relieved to get her hands on our dollars as we are to get our clothes back. Then off to the airport for our first flight. We are seated separately because the plane is full of school groups. I sit next to an Australian teacher accompanying students who have been doing voluntary work. He tells me how they have taken disabled kids swimming, brought gifts for orphans and sung with blind children. It makes my sightseeing followed by cocktails feel rather shallow. Passengers transiting Singapore are offered a free 2 ½ hour city tour. So we ... read more

“Travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta So its been about 6 years since my last blog entry. It’s good to be back! I’ve done my fair share of travelling since then from European countries to the Caribbean to Asia but all much shorter trips to fit in around work and parenthood. I’ve ticked another few countries off my bucket list taking my total number now to 68 (as Easter Island and The Galapagos don't count as separate)! But to date, Sri Lanka has eluded me. Now I find myself in the middle of Sri Lanka as part of the Mumpack Travel Club – a group of mainly Mum’s (although there are a couple of Dad’s in families) who have come together under the organisation of one ballsy ... read more

Woolly says – After a couple of most enjoyable days on the beach watching the fishermen at work, the crows sneaking off with their catch and avoiding the waves wherever possible I decided it was time to explore further. Having ensured that the women were up and ready on time I led them onto the main road just as a tuk tuk hove into view. He stopped, having asked for the bus station and checked the price – always important to do before climbing on board – a short ride later and we were left working out where the correct bus stop was. Jo smiled at an elderly man and asked, he pointed and grinned in return, it was proving rather easy, we climbed onboard to find that every seat was taken, as I started to ... read more

Woolly says – Having spent the night trying not to sneeze any further and under threat from Jo that grave injury would occur to my trunk if I splatted anyone else with my germs I awoke with a mussy head but a high level of determination to enjoy the day. Having made arrangements yesterday to have our first tuk tuk ride I was ready at the gate a little bit early…….. Make that four hours early! Woolly says - ……… after a lengthy wait my chariot hove into view, a cute green tuk tuk driven by our new friend Sham. Before I could get myself comfortable we shot down the road and into the streams of traffic, chaos, total chaos, as we sped past bikes and scooters and screeched into the smallest spaces I could feel ... read more

Woolly says – Christmas had passed, and my Aston Martin seems to have got lost at the North Pole, I have sent a quick email to Santa to get him to look into it, Jo says I should be happy with all the presents I got ….. what does she know! Father Christmas had also bought Zoe a cold, she lay in a pathetic heap sniffing and coughing everywhere before very unkindly passing it to me and Jo for a Boxing day treat. Getting onto a flight with a streaming cold wasn’t the best, as we settled into our seats the mammoth sneezed, twice, covering several rows in front of us and the stewardess who was passing by, everyone looked at us, I sneezed into yet another tissue and tried to look apologetic through my streaming ... read more

Our hotel Cinnamon Red did not look great to be honest but we got a high level corner room with great views overy Colombo. Of course first thing we did was to head to the pool....rooftop infinity..! OMG.. the family will know that I am not great on heights but I did have a swim and lay on a lounger albeit not too close to the edge. Again the view was amazing across Colombo and out to sea. Colombo is about 2 million people biggest city in Sri Lanka (21 million total). We are only in Colombo for the night so dinner then bed and then breakfast. Our package in all Sri Lankan hotels includes breakfast and dinner buffets so it will be a battle of wills to try to keep the waist lines under control. ... read more

As the Sri Lankan adventure slowly moves towards finishing so to has my timeliness with this blog. I am now two days behind and writing this on the morning of our final day. There is an unspoken rule amongst us blog writers that all blogs must be completed prior to disembarking in your home country. Hence the two days covered here and what will probably be two days in the next posting. After our trip to Galle we decided upon a quieter day so a trip to the beach followed by a cooking class and dinner in the guest house. Tuk tuks to Polhena beach which was about 6km from Marissa so 15minutes by tuk. The staff at guest house said this was a beach favoured by local folk not so much by tourists but was ... read more
