This is my second evening off in the past two weeks... and it is glorious. I can no longer justify teaching my children because they all compute to ages 7 and 8. When you are born in Korea they count you as 1, and on New Years day after your birth year, you are 2. Then you celebrate each successive New Years as you are legitimately gaining a year. EX: I am 26 in Korean years. So when my kids tell me they are 9 and 10, they are really 7 and 8. As Verga put it - “I’m not saying the US is a great country but at least we got ‘counting time’ right, f—k that Korean b—---t.” Amen Brother, Amen. My class is more interested in attempting to kill each other and calling me ... read more

Our ransom over the kids involves 'Happy Stickers.' Premise: Happy Sticker are rewarded for good behavior and retained for bad behavior, and then near the end of camp we open a market where the stickers are redeemed for prizes. The purchasing power of a happy sticker is 2 = half a banana. But, the true power of Happy Stickers lies in the fact that kids will kill each other over one. If I need to distract children I will throw a sheet of stickers on the ground and watch them fight over it like beggars looking for their last meal towards survival. The best item you could possibly buy at the market is an orange slice or banana, not because they are the most expensive but because the other gifts are tragically misguided. In an attempt ... read more

"You speakee English? You want easy money? Come work my school!" -- (Excerpt from my third phone interview) OK, actually that was about the WHOLE interview. The bank account was looking rather paltry and I jumped on the train of easy employment, teaching English in Seoul along with tens of thousands of other native speakers. Despite my cynicism on life in Korea, I have to admit that the work itself was surprisingly pleasant and rewarding, even given my initial hand-wringing at the thought of having to entertain children all day long. And, while it is easy as pie to hop on a plane and instantly have a job in Korea, certain bits of information can drastically improve your position in life. I personally read through lots of blogs while searching for a teaching job to glean ... read more

Seeing as how I'm on vacation at the moment I have decided to spend a bit of time hiking and wandering around my local mountain (the famous Kumdansan - people come from all over Korea to check it out.... or so I heard!). I went there last week one day and got some pretty cool pictures, but I've also been up there today and it was SO much better! Why? Because there was snow!!!! I've found a new route which starts at the bus station. This requires a 10 minute bus journey from my house to the end of the line, and the old adjosshi driving the bus today was getting more and more concerned as the bus emptied out the closer we got, leaving just a lone foreigner on board! As we pulled up to ... read more

Well, I got out of the 'prison camp' and into Seoul for part of the weekend...what a relief! We finished teaching at 6pm on Saturday and the bus left the campus for Seoul at 6.30pm. After arriving in Seoul we went straight to our accomodation which was a hostel. There, we managed to find some of the only other Australians in South Korea! We then went out to Dondaemun, which is a massive market area. This area has lots of 5-10 storey shopping markets that are open until 5am! :o) Yay for late night shopping! I didn't buy much, except some 'genuine' adidas sneakers...for $40 :o) No way to tell that they aren't real tho... The next day we headed off to a Buddhist temple for some sightseeing, and then to Namdaemun, which is another massive ... read more

This is my final entry for now as I arrived home safe/sound. But prior to going back to work.... I arrived in Manila Friday morning and after 1/2 day of touring the city was ready to go home. While the people are friendly, the city is not. All the traffic lights we hate, I wish Manila had - not that anyone driving really pays any attention to the traffic lights that are present. The general rules of the road are: the bigger vehicle goes first; you are considered a vehicle. Honking is a courtesy... Collectively pedestrians serve as a vehicle when crossing streets to stop traffic in whatever directions they choose. Friday nights are difficult nights to get a taxi; jeepneys are 10x cheaper but are open to the diesel fumes and smog. They are also ... read more

So This is how it goes. Camp is Chaos controlled in two buildings. I have to lowest level kids, so I work on things like the alphabet and basic words, then they start to act like caged monkeys and I finally break down to just letting them play hours of hang-man or whatever. Since I haven’t shaved in two weeks they call me monkey and TV Star... which I still don’t get. But Today was an especially fun day, after a two hour routine of “Guess Who”, and a short interjection of "Hi, Nice to meet you, my name is _____" we went on a field trip. First to Mini Mini Land, where everything is miniature but the place Mega sucks. The premise is this: Take all great works of architecture, or at least great Post ... read more

Things I love about Korea - People are accepting, kind, and overly-generous (the other night, when I left the elevator, a 2-yr old girl very graciously and respectfully bowed to me and said good-bye in Korean, a courtesy, of course of which, I returned to the amazement of her parents) - Bread here is squishy soft - Snow is always snowball worthy... always - Currency is about 900 to 1, and that makes me feel rich when I regularly carry tens of thousands around in my wallet - Meals are served while sitting on the floor (chairs are indeed unnecessary) - Floors are heated (and this makes eating on the floor that much cooler... or whatever) - Chopsticks improve fine-motor skills (and this is something everyone should work on) - You never pour your own drink ... read more

There is so much to talk about, therefore I am going to address a single issue at a time. This one is food. Here at the camp we have three square meals a day. The catch being they are cafeteria meals AND Korean style. So we are getting the equivalent of school food in Korea, which really is much better than school food in America. Here is breakfast, lunch and dinner... read more
