Bomunsan Mountain What a breathtaking hike this was both literally and figuratively. It seemed like a good way to pass a Sunday with a couple of friends not expecting to find all the hidden treasures that we did. To start off the hike we were lucky enough to find a temple with a large variety of Buddha sculptures each with their own unique touches. You could feel the peace and serenity being in the area and it was a welcoming break from the city life where everything from eating to crossing the street is a race. After taking in all the temple had to offer we then made our way up the trail to the bottom of the mountain. As soon as you emerge into the trees you get the fresh smell of nature and the ... read more

''A journey a thousand miles starts with one step.'' This is a quote that I have always held close to my heart, however, I never thought that I would put it into practice. I have always had those thoughts of what else is really out there and here I am living in another country. This is just a stepping stone to a new beginning in my life. It has opened my eyes to many things and how different yet similar we all are. We are all people with morals, values, thoughts and believes. It is our language differences that create a barrier for us to fully communicate, but this is a hurdle that can be overcome. Speaking to someone in their mother tongue gains you a lot of respect as you are trying. I feel blessed ... read more

Traditional Market Recently I was lucky enough to venture through a traditional market here in Daejeon. It was actually by a mere mistake that my mate Jessica and I found this treasure within the city. We were on our way to the famous Zooland that we have heard so much about, however, as usual we got a tad bit lost. I think our inner campus has dimmed as we can never find where we want to go in an efficient way. If anything I feel this is a great gift because we are able to find places such as this. Off of the main street there were numerous people sitting on the sidewalk or with wagons selling their fresh goods. The fruit here is absolutely incredible. Everything is so fresh as if it was just ... read more

This entry is for my parents. I must start off by saying that this was an accidental discovery of fresh-farmer's-market-treasure. As Chantelle and I were trying to follow the doh-doh tourist info lady's directions of where to get on the bus to Zooland, we stumbled upon a traditional farmer's market just oustide of Daejeon Station. Amazed, we delved deeper and deeper into this market full of steriodal-looking apples, peaches, and pears...fresh chicken and fish...healthy clusters of garlic and onions...as well as enormous bags overflowing with dried red hot chilies. I also noticed a plentiful selection of beans, lentils, big blocks of tofu, sardines, and dried seafood. Distracted, we never did find the bus to Zooland...someday. Enjoy Mum & Dad! ... read more

Hi again. Let's talk about Costco for a minute, shall we? Admit it, it freakin rocks your world. Even halfway across the globe, its still rockin mine. After being in Korea for a couple weeks, my Edmonton comrade and I decided to hit up Costco right here in Daejeon. We got lost at first but finally managed to find the signature beige & red building that just gives you that warm giddy feeling inside. Upon seeing those big red words of COSTCO splayed across the side of the building, all feelings of homesickness disappeared in that instance! Of course, its not your usual big box store like back home...here, it consisted of 3 floors (one being the parkade). Remember, them Koreans just don't have the space, so we gotta build up! Walking in, we started our ... read more

Well, its been almost a month since I've left Edmonton to make a new "home sweet home" here in Daejeon. Its taken a month for me to get that "You know what? I think I'm gonna be alrite." feeling...which, to me, sounds like a perfect time to start up this travel blog of mine! Heads up, I'm not the greatest writer but I will try to do my best. It definitely was a rocky start for me in the very beginning...being unbelievably homesick, I just wanted to jump on the next flight home. Staying in "redlight luv motels" was quite the interesting experience for me, what with the heart headboards and ACTUAL red fluorescent lights...However I soon came to realize that these types of motels are part of the norm that is Korea, as I ended ... read more

I haven’t written in awhile as I have been so busy, but I found some time to sit down and write a blog entry. I have been here for about 6 weeks now and am finally settling down. It is starting to feel more comfortable as I am developing a routine. For my own sanity I need to have a weekly routine over here in Daejeon. I have started getting back into running and a normal sleeping pattern. Work is exhausting however. Teaching English to kindergarten is not an easy task. There is so much prep work involved because you need to be well prepared for every class. If you have any time left over or you are unsure of what to do, the kids go wild since controlling children that only know limited English is ... read more

Hi all! Update time. I am doing just fine even though I did get very sick. I knew that I would get attacked by the foreign germs but I did not know how sick I would get. I had to go visit a clinic here in the neighbourhood and get some medication. I was also severely dehydrated. The doctor’s office here is very odd; you literally go into his office and sit at a chair by his desk. The way they check you out is much different as well and they are obsessed with checking your blood pressure. The doctor prescribed me 5 pills and 3 liquid medications that I had to take 3 times a day and you only get enough for 3 days. I thought that was a little excessive; however I am now ... read more

I figured that I would write another blog entry. I am trying to think of what has happened in this past week that was out of the ordinary and so different. Work was the same as per usual, except for the fact that I got sick. I should have known that would happen. There are germs here that are not in Canada and plus many of the kids are sick as well. I just coughed and had a stuffy nose with the rest of my students so it all worked out in the end. The kids are getting used to my teaching style now, however, they are also learning how to ‘annoy’ Chantelle teacher. Typical children! I still look forward to going to school and seeing them though. I did finally get my medical done at ... read more

I thought I would write another blog about my last few days to keep you updated. I did talk to quite a few of you already and I miss you! I am getting a phone very soon as I get my arc this friday! This weekend was not that busy as all I did was some exploring and shopping. On Saturday I woke up and decided to go out for a long walk not taking into consideration the weather! I walked for about 4 hours and ended up walking down along the river to what is called Expo Park. This is a huge amusement park, waterpark and where they have special events. I was also fortunate enough to find the information centre where I recieved a lot of information about what there is to do in ... read more
