Suzanne here... I was really excited about Seoul. We arrived at the huge bus terminal, some way from our hotel, not unexpected given the size of Seoul. We found wi-fi and worked out which bus we needed. First of all we picked up T-cards, the easiest way to travel in Seoul. There was one blip when the first card we'd paid for failed to dispense. We pressed the call button and an engineer came out, and promptly found the ticket which was just stuck at the side. Oops! The bus took about 45 minutes. First impressions of the area were good with lots of cute bars and resturants (we'd picked it for nightlife). We were staying at the Haemil Guesthouse. The room was small but fine, apart from the stupid shower attached the sink arrangement as ... read more

The trip up from Busan was pleasantly short. It was only a four-hour hop from Busan's Central Station up to Seoul's Express Bus Terminal from where I jumped onto the excellent Metro system and made my way up to Hongik University station and from there it was just a short walk to my hostel - Seoulwise Guesthouse, which was to be my home for the following 9, yes 9, days staying from 14th of September until the 23rd. I had a total of two weeks in South Korea spending 5 days in Busan and 9 in Seoul. Some people might say that it's too much but throughout my travels I've always favoured quality over quantity. In other words, getting to know fewer places well rather than breezing through more and not experiencing anything! It turned out ... read more

We arrived in Incheon airport by night and took the subway to our hostel. We booked a place in Hongdae district (Seoul) which turned out to be a great idea. It's very close to Seoul University thus the area is young and there is lots of restaurants and pubs with reasonable prices (of course coming from China everything seem expensive, we have to adjust). Jimjilbang. You should not leave Korea without experiencing a Jimjilbang. So we checked that off our list asap. But what is it? Jimjilbang are public bath house. Upon arrival, we were given two towels, a large T-shirt, a short and a key. We had no idea about the procedure so we followed the woman who entered just after us. First you have to leave your shoes in a small locker. Then you ... read more

My third trip up to Seoul and this was the first time I would see much of it! As my school gave me an optional day off work, I headed up by myself on Friday afternoon, taking the 5-hour bus for cheapness sake. We were staying at Base Camp hostel in Hongdae, the university area, and it has a really cool set-up: basically bunk beds in enormous canvas tents, in one large room. It was already very hot outside, a good 5 degrees hotter than in Busan at least. I headed off to Namsangol to see a traditional Hanok village. This area mostly consisted of five traditional Korean houses from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), recovered from different parts of the city and relocated to the northern foot of Namsan (mountain). The interiors of each of these ... read more

Today I woke up super late at 12pm. I was feeling very lazy and sad that this is the last day I will spend in Korea. I got dressed had breakfast (or lunch) in the hotel. I went over to Avenuel once again but this time I bought some bags and clothes. It was very expensive since it was in high end shopping centre. After shoppoing I went back to the hotel to put my stuff away and went donw the street to eat at around 3:30pm. I had black bean noodles and beef. I really like black bean noodles as well. It is one of my favourite Korean dishes along with the spicy rice cake. I then went to the Seoul world cup stadium. The stadium was constructed quite recently for the 2002 world cup ... read more

Let's be serious for five minutes. Wandering through Hongdae in Seoul, is like walking through the Taste of Colorado minus the tickets. Taste of Colorado is a one weekend, three day experience in the heart of Denver where restaurants bring a selection of simple foods and recreate them for you to try. It's a teaser menu. A menu big enough to entice you to their restaurant. Hongdae, is like this everyday. There are little eateries everywhere. And since bumping into Justin about a month ago (again). We've been indulging on eclairs, ice cream cones, artisan breads, pretzels, macaroons, barbeque beef, noodle dishes, sweet bean pies, fruit shakes and more. It's been one heck of an edible cornucopia adventure! One unexpected Friday evening, Shauna and I take off into Seoul after work for dinner. Justin calls says, ... read more

ok so the last few days have been much more chilled then the previous couple of weeks. everything is slowing down and everyone is pretty tired, but graduation is soon and hopefully we'll be going out to somewhere like hongdae or itaewon to celebrate :) last night i went to a dog cafe in hongdae (although we got off a stop before). apparently its on the seoul tourist website so it's pretty popular, more white people in there then in the cat cafe in hongdae i went to in the first few weeks. i'm so used to weird and wonderful things, and the dog cafe just felt completely normal. a cafe (3 floors up) that was full of dogs. big, small, fat, friendly, naughty. there were corgis and huskeys and labs, everything! it was free to ... read more

Cat Cafe- Located near Hongdae station, exit 7? If you want to go write down cat cafe in korean and there will be many students hanging about the station willing to show you to it (as we experienced a few days ago!). Anyway after a few hours of searching and getting lost we finally get the right subway stop and right alleyway and find the cafe of cats (n.b opens at 1pm!). We walk in and yes, we are inundated with cute. Overwhelmed by kitty love. it cost us a mere 8000W to hang out at the cafe and this also included a drink- I went for iced tea, Tina went for green tea latte. Ohhhhh how I was wooed by the charm of the kittens. I was surrounded by 15 year old girls, infatuated by ... read more

Think of the T-money card as your all in one transportation card. It works with the metro Seoul subway system, the express buses, standard buses, local buses and Korail train system. Its universal coverage makes it a benefit for anyone coming into South Korea for business or pleasure. You can even use it in lieu of cash or credit cards at some local businesses. Thankfully South Koreans are on top of modern day technology and simplifying their public transportation system. The T-money card can be purchased at your local convenience stores for 2,500 won ($2.10). Once you have purchased the T-money card, it must be charged at a bus or train station terminal. The standard T-money card is about the size of your average business card and will fit into your purse or wallet easily. It ... read more
