Day 16 Yesterday I went to the O'sulloc Tea Museum, shop and café. O'sulloc is a Jeju Tea Garden established in 1979 and it's the largest tea producer in Korea. In the shop they were selling different kind of tea, green, black etc. and some cosmetics. I bought one package of ... tea. I tasted their green tea icecream and at first it tasted quite good but after couple spoons I couldn't eat it anymore. Next I went to the Innisfree Jeju house. It is one of my favorite cosmetic chains in here so I was quite excited because I had read one day before that there you could do your own soaps. You could choose from three different options: green tea, volcanic pore and tangerine. I chose to do the volcanic pore. It cost 15 000 ... read more

Today I went to see the Cheonjeyeon falls, it took about 40 minutes by bus from Jeju Intercity Bus Terminal. Cheonjeyeon falls consist 3 parts, Cheonjeyeon fall and two other waterfalls, and Seonim-gyo bridge goes over the waterfalls. It was raining the whole time I was there but it didn't bother me at all and I could enjoy the beautiful views of the waterfalls. After seeing the waterfalls I met two guys named Taehan and Ho Sung and they asked me if I would like to go and see the Oedolgae rock with them. They had a car so we drove to see the Oedolgae rock. Oedolgae is a 20 meter high pillar shaped rock formed 1.5 million years ago by a volcanic eruption. According to legend, an old woman became a rock after waiting for ... read more

Day 13 Yesterday I flew to Jeju island with Air Busan. When I went to the airport to do the check-in, the clerk lady asked me if I wanted to change to earlier flight. I changed the flight without any extra charges and went straight to the departure gate. One hour later I was in Jeju island. Jeju is one of the nine provinces of South Korea and it's the nation's largest island. There lives about 604 000 people and it's popular holiday destination for Koreans and foreigners. Here I'm staying in a hostel called the Forest Hostel. I have never tried staying in a dorm room so now I decided to try it in Jeju and I'm sharing the room with one person, but the room can accommodate up to four people. After getting my ... read more

Another earlyish start. At least this morning wasn't too early and I was able to take advantage of the hostel's free breakfast again. I love me some eggs toast and peanut butter. My first port of call for today was the O'Sulloc green tea fields. I headed to the bus station and caught the bus, I can't remember how it took but it wasn't too long, maybe 30-40 minutes and took me to a different part of the island. I had read someone's blog about visiting the tea fields and was prepared to be underwhelmed. The bus dropped me right in front of the museum. I headed across the road to the green tea fields. After having visited the beautiful green tea fields in Boseong, these ones were a bit pathetic in comparison. The road runs ... read more

I was up at the crack of dawn, not long after five am. I dressed and went to the kitchen to pick up my supplies, and knock an energy drink back. I headed out to the bus stop, which was on the main street in front of the hostel, very convenient. I got there just before 6 am, and there were already a lot of people waiting for it, hikers and other people. I was wondering why the other people were up and about so early, I am definitely not a morning person, so struggle to see why people would get up so early if not for a special reason. The bus came not long after 6 am. The bus originates at the bus station and where I got on at City Hall was the second ... read more

I had set my alarm to get up early, but I decided to ignore it for a little bit and sleep on. I still managed to make it down to breakfast at a reasonable time. The hostel kitchen was really nice, it was big and clean with plenty of seating. The breakfast is make it yourself, but is included in the price. There is juice, tea, coffee, eggs, bread, peanut butter and jam. I made sure to have plenty of coffee and some scrambled eggs, and toast with peanut butter. When I left the hostel, the weather outside was pretty miserable and I was too cold in my shorts and t-shirt, so I headed back inside to put my jeans on. I thought it was meant to be summer... It was raining, so I popped into ... read more

Thank you MERS! I got to start my long weekend a day earlier! I flew from Gimpo around lunchtime and landed in Jeju an hour later. The flight was a little turbulent. The views were gorgeous as we headed south and I could see all the islands that are dotted around the south coast. I took the bus from the airport to my hostel. It didn't take too long, maybe half an hour. I got checked in, got some info booklets and maps and planned what to do with my day. I had spotted a palace, when I had been on the bus, so decided to head there, as it's ages since I had been to one. I obviously thought that the palace was much further away, as I was surprised we got there so quickly. ... read more

Leaving Seoul to go to Jeju Island for the weekend, we lined up to wait for the airport limousine (a bus). A family ahead of us with a lot of luggage were poached away by a couple of taxi drivers but as the taxis started to drive away, the bus pulled up... the family got out the taxis and started to unload all of their luggage, Russ jokingly said "Well we are first in line now" but the Momma bear did not like that, she started yelling at Russ, "NO, we are first in line, we have been waiting for a long time. We are FIRST!" We all got on the bus and waited for it to leave but there was a problem with another passenger. She wouldn't be honest about the age of her children ... read more

In the spring of 2009 I got my first real taste of living away from home, in another country, and my first real dose of the travel bug. I spent a semester living in Derby, England and studying at the university there. I got to visit places that had been on my bucket list for years - I went to the top of the Eiffel Tower and visited the Louvre, climbed Notre Dame and saw Sacre Coeur; I went inside the Colosseum and climbed to the top of the Vatican / St. Peter's Basilica; I made my way up the winding staircases of the Leaning Tower of Pisa; and got to visit Germany, Switzerland, and Spain to boot. As a university student I lived in university housing. Our flat consisted of 6 people - 3 boys ... read more

Pig Huts, Dragons & Divers 8:30 and we’re off for a tour of Jeju City, South Korea. This island, located to the south of mainland Korea has 10 million visitors a year. To put this into perspective, Hawaii has about 6 M visitors a year and Bali about 3 M a year. Jeju City is a two hour flight from Shanghai and a 2 hour flight from Seoul so lots of Chinese and Korean tourists. Jeju is a volcanic island and the volcanic rock is used for everything from steps, to walls to artwork and homes. 15 minutes by bus to the Natural History Museum where we learned about the women divers of Jeju. The women dive for fish as an occupation. They are “fish divers”. They go down to 40 feet without breathing apparatus. They ... read more
