After a day of touring the islands in El Nido, it became obvious to us why this is one of the most popular destinations in Palawan. The captivating view from the main beachfront is just a glimpse to what lies beyond. Check out our main blog here for details of our trip: ... read more

Our time in El Nido was like a dream. I've never been anywhere as stunningly scenic as the places we visited in the past 5 days. John describes it as ethereal. The views were so overwhelmingly beautiful that Brenda said we must have died and gone to heaven. Neither words nor pictures will really do this place justice. We arrived on the 25th after an hour flight from Manila. We stayed in El Nido town proper instead of the luxury resorts in the islands on the archipelago. The whole stay ended up costing us a third of what it would have had we opted to stay in either Lagen or Miniloc. We made all our arrangements through El Nido Art Cafe , a one stop shop cafe/restaurant/travel agency on the El Nido main street. We were ... read more

Being two dive enthusiasts, we usually choose diving over snorkeling anyday, however we took the word from locals that snorkeling is comparable to diving in El Nido. We were pleasantly surprised by the corals thriving within 5-10 feet underwater and the creatures that inhabited the reef. Courtesy of our banca boat driver Dan-Dan, we were able to try on a pair of authentic Filipino flippers! These cleverly constructed flippers resembled wooden ping-pong paddles with foot straps. We were amazed by the efficiency of the flippers depsite their simple construction. QUICK TIPS: •In El Nido there are several island hopping tours grouped in categories A, B, C, & D. We took tours A & B on two separate days. There are also options for overnight camping trips available. •Tour packages are available all around town, however we ... read more

After seven hours boat journey we arrived at El Nido from Coron. It is a nice trip. They served us lunch, chicken and rice on the boat. We settled at a beach front cottage, Rosannas Cottages (1500 PHP incl. breakfast and wi-fi). There are so many islands to be visited, so they have divided the tours into four (A,B,C,D). The first two days we enjoyed tours A and B and on the third day we combined tour C and D with eight guests. On every tour they provide the lunch on a piece of beach on the islands. Lunch is usually fish grilled. When the group is large you may have chicken and pork extra. By the way you have to have your own drinking water. You will discover the beauties of Bacuit Archipelago from the pictures ... read more

OK, so we're not really in the Philippines anymore. We're now home, and sadly our three month epic journey has come to an end. What a trip! We've not posted for a while, as we really enjoyed the last couple weeks of chilling in different parts of the Philippines. After flying out of Cairns, Australia we traveled to Manila. We found much of the Philippines is a great place to visit. However, Manila, the capital, does not remotely fall into this category. We hastily got out of the massive, smog-ridden town and bussed north to try to get in some more surfing, as we'd heard that San Fernando has reliable waves. It turns out 'reliable' is not the words we would use, as although there was a nice beach, the only waves to be seen were ... read more

El Nido is the crown jewel of Palawan, and rightfully so. It is surrounded by over 1000 islands of the Bacuit Archipelago, many of which are a short boat ride away from town. The island hopping is amazing. The boat ride from Port Barton to El Nido took about 5 hours. It was pleasant enough, but the longer ride when compared to the Sabang-Port Barton trip had us dreading the much longer El Nido to Coron trip to come. As we got close to El Nido we marveled at all the karst limestone islands. The cliffs go straight down to the water, with an overhang 5-10 feet above the water due to erosion. Most islands have little hidden coves of white sand beach. The town of El Nido is surrounded by limestone cliffs, making it a ... read more

After the 7 hour incredibly scenic (but expensive 2,200PHP) boat ride from Coron Town to El Nido through a land that can only be described as Robinson Crusoe real estate, we all got off with our sea legs well and truly on.. it's amazing just how long it takes for the swaying sensation of being at sea to wear off! El Nido is really small and easy to walk around in a few minutes so along with David from Israel and Dominic from Germany we set off to find somewhere to sleep for our time here. It was quite a bit more expensive here than we'd hoped, we'd all thought we'd find rooms for around 500PHP but the cheapest we could find (with rooms available) were 800PHP. This room was a lovely spanking new room on ... read more

They bite at my flesh as I lie in the water. Yellow, red, blue, purple, green, silver, black, brown and white. A symphony of colours. Stripes and dots. Little critters with sharp incisors and large oval ones with huge puffed lips. A magnificent display, a wonderland of sorts. He swims right at my mask. A fish the size of my finger but defiant as he protects his territory. A blow fish magnifies itself to twice its normal size. To my right a purple starfish does whatever starfish do. I have been floating in the Bacuit archipelago for less than fifteen minutes but have already seen more variety of animals than exist in the Adriatic. A whistle blows, signalling to return to the Polynesian style outrigger canoe. A short journey later we find ourselves passing through a ... read more
