The next day, the alarm sounded at 5:30. And again at 5:35, followed by a knock on our door. And two missed calls came in via sms. At 5:42, we had put on some clothes (a long sleeve would have been nice) and climbed 5 more stairs to the top of a highrise. The view was amazing but as you can see on the photos, the fog was kinda ruining it. (tried again at 8:00 for the last few photos) An interesting thing was to see all the other people at other high places watching and being a bit frustratrated. In the end, we did see the mountains in the distance, with a low nice light on them from the rising sun. ... read more

Today we started out easy with a good breakfast (included in the price). We had fruits, eggs, coffee, potato and something else I can't remember and headed out around 11, with the guide from the previous day, Jay. Also present were Jarod (USA), who travels the world and teaches (mostly) English in S/SE Asia and Maynard from Minnesota, who chose to see the world after retiring, also hoping to escape the American bubble. So on we went to Bakhtapur, Durbar square, and the temples. In continuation of yesterdays education, I learned about some hindu gods and their transports. Each of the 33 million gods has their own unique transportation, which can be anything. I have some trouble reconciling the fact that there's only a couple of thousand words that can be used for that. I guess ... read more

We arrived in Kathmandu from Delhi the afternoon of Weds 3rd October. The small airport was very easy to navigate and the new electronic visa application meant we didn’t need to use any of our passport photos and speeded up the form filling process. Despite the fact they prefer you to pay in cash (ideally US dollars but all major currencies now accepted) they will accept visa with a 2% surcharge. Unlike our experiences in India we found everyone incredibly helpful and smiley. I even ended up chatting to passport control about the importance of work life balance for quite a while (I was the last in the queue). Our hotel picked us up from the airport for free and we were soon in our beautiful hotel, Taleju, in Thamel. We were greeted with mango juice, ... read more

Arrived safe and sound. After some initial trouble passing customs, finding the right truck and getting trough the busy Kathmandu traffic, we arrived at our destination: shangri-la boutique hotel and had a hearthy welcome from the manager, Bino. Had food (an Indian curry for me) at a place I think was called 'French kitchen', with Holly from England, who we met in the bus. The next day we arranged a driver and guide and went to see Patan and the royal palace. We would never have found all the small places that were interesting. Nothing is marked. No street names entryways, signs, etc. So on the way there, we dove into a small alley / square, took off our shoes and went up the stairs into a house. At the top, there was a small 2 ... read more

I've been thinking about going to Nepal for donkey's years and somehow I never got around to doing just that. Fooling around in South East Asia, making brewery shares go up and a bit of scuba diving and after that the merry go round in the Americas. Too little time for fun or maybe there's a time for everything and that is now. We, yes we because for once I'm not going on my own, my oldest son Raul and two other blokes. Raul and I have ridden around the Alps a couple of times and it's worked out really well. The other two guys are unknown entities to us, we've met them briefly one time so we'll see how it works out. Stefan, an OAP like me, is the instigator of this little trip and ... read more

Upardang Gadi Hike “A few hours of walk, and you see everything below your feet: the lights, the city, the rivers, the clouds, the forests, and even the setting sun.” Situated at an altitude of 1275m above sea level, Upardang Gadi served as the district headquarters of Chitwan until the mid-20th century. It is mainly a fort built by the Shah Kings to protect Nepal from the southern invasion. Now, the fort is one of the main attractions of the place. In addition to the fort, Upardang Gadi is now known for the rich culture of Chepang, Gurung and Magar communities. Moreover, it is a perfect place to enjoy the beauty of flat plains of the south and the majestic peaks of the Himalayas in the north at the same time. The landscape gets amazingly mesmerizing ... read more

“When you reach the top, one side is a paradise in green whereas the other is a concrete prison in a bowl.” Chitlang is a small village that lies to the south of Chandragiri hill in the district of Makwanpur. Especially famous for Organic Village resort and goat farms, Chitlang is an emerging destination for hiking and overnight stays. However, people love to spend their night at Markhu village. Located in the southwestern side of Indrasarowar lake, Markhu offers a beautiful scenic picture of the lake and nearby hills. Away from the babel and rush of Kathmandu valley, this adventure can be a truly amazing experience to embrace in a short time. Although there are some other possible routes and itineraries, I am suggesting what I found best to do here to wrap the most of ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu Valley June 10th 2018

The flight time from Dubai to Kathmandu is about 5 hours so I decided to splurge an extra $60 for a front row seat with lots of leg room (both ways). It is amazing how few people are willing to pay a few dollars for a little comfort on generally uncomfortable aircraft. Total cost at this time of the year is $400 return, this is the only good thing about living in Dubai. I cruised through the airport so quickly that my hotel transfer had not yet arrived, so we had to wait for about ten minutes in the muggy evening heat, I pack extremely light these days with one 35 litre backpack which makes quick airport access and exit assured. We arrived at the hotel, confirmed some arrangements for the next day and got to ... read more

We got a hot and sticky bus back from the mountains back into civilisation which took almost the entire day. First problem was a huge section of the road had disappeared into the valley so there were 3 diggers creating a new route to drive along. That took about 2.5 hours, then we had to stop at garage for some reason or another and then we had a tyre blow out as we were snaking a hill. By late afternoon we were back in the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. We showed Jaap Shantipur Hostel and he decided to check in too. We all headed up to the roof terrace and sipped Masala Teas watching the sunset over the bustling city. After a long day cooped up on the bus we wanted to stretch our legs ... read more

We caught the bus headed for Pokhara and the journey wasn’t the most comfortable! It took all day (and it was raining) but when we got to the hostel we were very happy. Jaap had organised a room for us at the place he was staying at previously and had the most horizontal person running it - Susheel. He went paragliding in the day and had a few rooms at his guesthouse with a rooftop to die for. We were higher than most other places, it had a beautiful view of Lake Phewa and behind was just smaller guesthouses and then jungle. Safe to say we set up camp here on a few occasions! Our time in Pokhara was spent mostly doing nothing as we thought we deserved a break from all of the exercise! Pokhara ... read more
