The room we were staying in opened up into the dining room so it’s unsurprising that we were woken up rather early by staff and other trekkers getting up. The hard beds and pillow that felt like it was made from wood probably didn’t help either. The room was so tiny the beds touched the wall on 3 sides which meant Stephen and I had to sleep apart for the first time since we’ve been traveling. It was a little weird. Fortunately being next to the restaurant also meant that the room was relatively warm so getting up wasn’t too painful. The walk started with an easy descent into Deboche. After just 15mins or so there were around 3 groups of lodges so we needn’t have worried about not being able to find somewhere to stay ... read more

Another beautiful sunny day with clear skies today. We liked the lodge we stayed in last night - it was friendly and cosy with good food at reasonable prices. It’s main disadvantage was the fact there only seemed to be one toilet for everybody in the lodge which did lead to rather a lot of queuing for the toilet. The day started in a traffic jam. We left our lodge and had to work our way through multiple yak packs being loaded for the day. We went through Namche and up the stairs behind the village towards Chhakung. At this point we met all the other trekkers leaving Namche and there was rather a long queue. With yaks and trekkers coming the other way you could only join the queue and progress was very slow. We managed to sleep through our alarm this morning but were still serve a hot breakfast when we finally scuttled down (you tend to be asked to pre-order breakfast the night before for a set time). It’s become clear very quickly that it’s much more expensive on this route than on the Annapurna circuit. This means that we’ve spent most of the day a little hungry. After eating our porridge we set off towards Namche Bazaar. The path is mostly paved and very easy to follow. Any places where you’re not sure where to go you simply wait a few seconds and another porter, trekker or yak train will emerge from the correct direction. To begin with the path descended along the edge of the valley. Once you can see the river it’s beautiful with clear ... read more

Much like our last attempt at a trek our first few days haven’t gone quite according to plan. We were supposed to fly to Lukla yesterday morning, and then hopefully walk to the next village the same day. Unfortunately after a day sitting in the airport due to poor weather at Lukla all flights were cancelled and we were put on a flight today instead. The frustrating thing was the complete lack of communication - we only discovered they’d been cancelled after going up the desk to ask for an update. Fortunately we managed to get a room in the same hotel we had been staying in in Thamel, Kathmandu. We also had a delicious dinner of aubergine and couscous in a restaurant called Mitho. It wasn’t too expensive and made a great change from rice ... read more

We had another early hours alarm to be ready for collection by Ransinga and our driver at 7.20 am. I can't say I leapt out of bed raring to go! Still, we didn't have to travel far to the airport - five minutes and we were there. I was really sad to be leaving this wonderful country and its people behind. I had grown especially fond of Ransinga, who had a brilliant self-deprecating sense of humour. He described himself as tall, dark and handsome - I could grant him the dark and handsome bits but he was smaller than me! He said he felt sure we would meet again, in either this life or another one. And of course I never got to meet King Jimmy 5. He has said his only wife is the only ... read more

We had to be up early on our final morning in Tibet, to catch our return flight to Kathmandu. Our hotel had been excellent, right in the heart of the city with everything one might need so I was somewhat surprised that Reception wasn't staffed 24 hours a day. It turned out it was, because I disturbed the young receptionist this particular morning when I went down about 5.30 am. Apparently, she slept on the cold marble floor behind the desk in a sleeping bag and a woolly pully and I don't know which of us was the more scared - me at the sight of her, suddenly rising up from nowhere, or her at the sight of me in pyjamas and a puffer jacket, with bleary eyes and a bed head. Not a good way ... read more

October 16th - Cho La Pass - Dia 117 Slept really good in the Sherpa Dorm, warmer then usual due to the amount of people in one room ?. Waking up and having my usual milk tea we started up towards the pass. I had the hardest time with this pass, walking every day was starting to get to me. This pass was also the most involved in which we had to cross a small glacier. Again we started a bit later then everyone else but managed to get ahead of them as the hike went on. I had special trouble catching my breath in certain sections but was glad that I had no headache or nausea. Finishing by evening we stayed in a small village called Dragnag for the rest of the day. Well deserved rest ... read more

October 14th - Gorakshep - Dia 115 Today we crossed our first of three 5000+meter passes. Kunma La Pass reaching an elevation of 5536 meters is the highest of the three. It was a long day with a lot of elevation gain. I was really proud of our pace. We kept a steady pace with minimal rests, taking over everyone that had started a few hours earlier then us. ? After passing the crowds we were venturing alone through the beautiful barren alpine terrain. The best part of the pass was having the huge mountain range which has Nuptse (7864m!) and Lhotse (8516m!) immediately on our right hand side. Being so close to such big mountains is incredible. Hopefully one lucky day I can climb any one of them. There are too many! Another cool feeling ... read more

October 12th - Dingboche - Dia 113 A tough and long day advancing all the way to the village of Dingboche. We got clouded over pretty badly and could not see anything all day long. I feel amazingly fit, not getting sore feet and not having to catch my breath too often  ?. I guess all the traveling before coming to Nepal has payed off. In terms of altitude Dingboche is situated at 4410m so we climbed a total of 1000meters today. I still feel great and no headache has emerged. Because of the clouds can't really see anything around Dingboche. Let's see what Dingboche village look like tomorrow. Hopefully we wake up with blue sky's ?... read more

The last day. Nothing planned. We tried to sleep in a little, despite the bell-ringing, that happens every day from 6:00 onward. It's to announce oneself to the hindu gods when entering a shrine. Took some time to properly stash our bags for the way back. Had breakfast, printed tickets, went out to buy the last few things we wanted .In my case, without much luck: The things I wanted most were: some new/extra packing cubes, a sleeping mask and maybe one well-fitting goretex / fishermanspants. No luck on any of those. Shop in, shop out. They're all the same here. There's your prototype 'the north fake' trekking shop, with all kinds of trekking clothes and accessoires. A hemp shop, with mostly backpacks. A Nepali/festival-kind of clothing store and shops for fabrics (yak, cashmere, pashima).rinse, repeat. ... read more
