As we are going to be in Nepal for 3 years, Alex thought it would be a good idea to send me on a cooking course so I learn how to cook a good curry! After searching around we came across this cooking course http://nepalicookingcourse.com/that is the best rated activity in Kathmandu according to TripAdvisor. A phone call later it was sorted, (from what I could gather) I was going on Monday morning for 3 hours of Nepali cooking. After trying and failing to establish where I was going to meet Amrit, He suggested the best plan was for me to get into a cab and get the taxi driver to call him to find out where to go. This worked and I was dropped off Asan square, in the heart of the old town Asan ... read more

As Alex was working today, I set off with the intention to have a good explore around Kathmandu. After a walk along the Bagmati river I ended up in Kathmandu Durbar square. The lonely planet guide book has a walking tour from Durbar square to Thamel that includes a good number of things to look at along the way. At the end of the walking tour I had lunch at a little restaurant overlooking Nateshwar Temple before heading home. The link bellow is to a panoramic I took at Kathesimbhu Stupa. http://www.dermandar.com/p/eFxsvo/Kathesimbhu%20Stupa... read more

1st August 2014 We made our way to the bank to change our pounds to rupees and were instantly ushered to the front of the queue which massively speeded the process up: it wasn't too painful but did require me to present my passport and fill in a form with a home address and a local on e for Nepal. Spent the rest of the morning wandering though Patan and attempted to get a public bus to Thamel: this (I maintain) was fairly successful and enjoyable except for the small detail that we were in fact on the wrong bus and need up in Chabahil and then had a 40 min walk to get to Thamel. Needless to say that as soon as we arrived in Thamel we found ourselves a shop and bought a map. ... read more

So after hours and hours of travelling we have arrived!! Within two minutes of being here we saw a wild monkey, tons of poverty, 2 wild asian cows, and were begged at for money by a little girl. It is for sure safe to say we are not in Canada anymore! On that note, the traffic is insane. I mean absolutely insane. There are no lines so it's basically every car, motorcycle and man for themselves. We understand that this is normal for them though which is reassuring (kind of). However when you find yourself playing chicken with all shapes and sizes of vehicle, you lose a little faith. During our flight we maybe got 4 hours of sleep between the two of us, so we were exhausted when we arrived! We had to stay up ... read more

I'm writing this due to popular demand to know what Isaac and I are up to. We arrived a few hours later than planned at the Summit Hotel. We were delayed due to poor weather preventing us from landing in Kathmandu. Other than that our journey was pretty smooth - I was upgraded to business class from Abi Dhabi so at least had managed to get a good sleep.... read more

As soon as you step out of the Kathmandu airport you are bombarded with people trying to carry your bags, get you a hotel and offer you a taxi. I was approached by a man asking me, “SIT?” I figured I would give this a shot even though he didn’t have an SIT sign. He brought me to another American, named Victoria. We were soon united with a Sherpa who was to take us to our tea house. Victoria and I sat in the back of a car barely bigger than a Car to Go, and held on! The driver was taking us through spaces that were JUST big enough for the car to pass through-We maybe had a centimeter on either side going in between alley ways, buses, motorcycles and even pedestrians. They don't expect ... read more

We arrived at Kathmandu International airport late afternoon from Dhaka, Bangladesh by United Airways (not to be confused with United Airlines of the United States). Checking through Immigration and Customs was reasonably easy and quick as there were not that many arriving passengers at that time; I think our flight was the only one. However, when we stepped out of the airport, I noticed that there were a good number of people, either waiting for passengers from our flight, or the next one coming in. I looked around for a taxi to take us into town. I didn't have long to wait. A man approached me and asked if I wanted a taxi. When I asked him how much to the city, he said, "500 Rupees," I made a quick calculation and it amounted to only ... read more

Kathmandu is one of the finest places that I have ever visited and coming from a guy that's been traveling for over 40 years, that's saying a lot. Flew to New Delhi from Bangkok on Jet Airways which is an Indian discount carrier. Very good airline. Changed planes in New Delhi. Be advised that there is a heavy, Indian military security presence in the airport. After deplaning you will have to go through another security check-point. X-ray luggage, pat down, the whole nine yards. I was happily surprised to see that my U.S. passport got me fast-tracked through the entire ordeal. The soldiers were quite friendly to me and seem genuinely interested in where I came from. When I told them that I had grown up in Chicago they immediately started rattling off the names of ... read more
