Well, we might have solved some of my stomach problems. Turns out Sita was putting MSG in a lot of my food for flavor. Since the packaging is in Nepali and the stuff looks like salt, I thought that’s what it was. But every time I eat Chinese fast food at home with MSG I suffer the next day, so maybe that’s what’s been going on recently. I did have bacteria, according to the doctor, but perhaps the reason why I never feel completely normal is the damn MSG! So we fixed that problem. Right now Sita is busy making me vegetable momos—I can’t wait! She went out this afternoon with 200 Rs and bought a ton of veggies, flour, and eggs to feed me until I go home. Earlier today she made me tofu and ... read more

5 days until I board the plane to come home. Is it terrible that I absolutely cannot wait? That I already have a suitcase mostly packed? That I already mapped out my train schedule from JFK to Connecticut a week ago? That I’ve planned what I am going to buy at the supermarket as soon as I get home? That I’ve been dreaming of the hot tub at the gym and Dunkin Donuts coffee and high speed internet? Luckily I have a very busy schedule until then. I just had lunch with Raj at Mike’s Breakfast and learned that a lot of Fulbrighters have been experiencing loneliness and depression. All I can say is, I’m so glad it’s not just me! Here I have been feeling like I am weak and not cut out for this, ... read more

It’s so nice to have electricity all day! Tuesday is the one day it does not go off in my district. I finally figured out the schedule (although, that doesn’t always mean anything). I found out yesterday from a Nepali friend that some officials in the government are selling power to India and padding their own wallets, which is why there’s not enough power to fuel all of Nepal at all hours. What the fuck?? Talk about greed and corruption! Businesses are suffering tremendously, not to mention the severe inconvenience for people’s everyday lives. I keep asking why people are not more outraged and rioting—Mary says if people make too much noise, they disappear… Yesterday was very productive research-wise. I went back to the Family Planning Association to meet with Beena, who is a joy to ... read more

Life is always strange here, and just when I think I’m used to the strangeness, strangeness occurs at the next level. All I can do is laugh, because if you sit here and wish for things to be otherwise, it’s a complete waste of time. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve actually experienced the craziness of the developing world first hand (I mean by living there, not as a tourist), but it baffles me that a majority of the world lives this way. For example, the last couple of days I have been dealing with the electricity going out at random hours, not according to the load shedding schedule I was given. So I just work while there is power and make sure my laptop is forever backed up by a battery. Coming into this experience ... read more

No electricity…again. I feel like I go more without it than when I have it. And of course this morning it went out as Ken was telling me about his father’s bypass surgery this weekend. Aargh! Luckily Ken is used to it by now…me cutting out in mid-sentence and disappearing for hours. But just when you need it most… We got back from Pokhara late yesterday afternoon, after another bus ride that made me feel like I was beat up. The scenery was beautiful—driving through all of the little villages, over rivers and through the foothills, but it was so tiring on my body just to keep myself from being thrown out of the seat that I felt exhausted afterwards. I’m going to yoga for the first time in a couple weeks to try to loosen ... read more

This “load shedding” kills me. Thank goodness I have a computer battery that lasts 4-5 hours and can get work done, catch up on emails (that won’t send until the power comes back on), or write. What else can you do for 3 hours with no electricity? Sometimes I read with a headlamp. Tonight I spent some time packing by the light of my battery-powered lamp for our trip to Pokhara. But by the beginning of the third hour, I start to run out of options. Today I was invited to a BBQ with the Colonel and all of his friends. This was the first time he and Sangeeta asked me to spend time with them, so it was a big honor. About 8 of his friends from the army were there, as well as their ... read more

My new strategy is dancing. This morning I turned up the itunes and danced by myself to Public Enemy and Shakira. It warmed me up, and it’s hard to feel depressed when dancing. I am really having trouble snapping out of this. I am not a person prone to depression—I usually have a couple of bad days and snap out of it, but I can’t seem to dig myself out of this. Yesterday was the first day I actually started thinking about coming home early. I don’t even know what’s causing it anymore, because no matter what I do, it doesn’t go away for more than a few hours at a time. Like Ken said this morning, you can’t expect to throw yourself into a world of poverty and to have all the skills to deal ... read more

More drama in the life of Dinesh and Renuka. Saturday night Dinesh and Bom went to the airline office to stand on line at 3am so that they would be sure to get plane tickets for the kids to fly back to the village during their school break. I guess the line starts getting long at 5am, so they headed out at 3am to make sure to get a good place. But before they could even reach the office, they were attacked and robbed. The robbers had big khukuri knives, so there was little they could do to protest. Dinesh lost his cell phone, $400 in cash, and his American debit card. Bom also lost his cell phone and suffered a cut to the chin bad enough for him to go to the hospital to get ... read more
