EVEREST BASE CAMP (EBC) 5340m high 3/6/10: Jacinta woke up feeling fine; she had no headache and the bed rest the day earlier really payed off. Although we had a restless sleep and packet noodles for breakfast we had a great start to the morning. Halfway into the walk we heard a massive thunder followed by the sound of what can only be described as a ragging torrent of water or a flooded river coming from the opposite side of the mountain, it was a huge avalanche that made our stomachs rumble from the noise. The only problem was it came from the hidden side of the mountain. It was so loud that I shuddered to think how loud it would have been if it happened on our side, I was so disappointed that we missed ... read more

DINGBOCHE TO LOBUCHE 1/6/10: Up at 5:00am to have noodles once again for breakfast, I was starting to think bringing 60 packets of noodles was a bad idea. Our walk started at the same acclimatization point we walk on our very first day in Dingboche. After a few photos we carried on walking in huge plateu between two mountain ranges. It was the clearest day we have had so far and our cameras were running hot before the threat of any weather closed in again. The temp was 15 degrees making it perfect for walking in the beautiful valley. We were having such a great time we stopped for a light snack; having a little nap set in amongst huge giants. Everything was perfect, clear skies, great views, good snacks with no noodles, we weren’t fighting ... read more

DINGBOCHE TO CHHUNKHUNG and CHHUNKHUNG RI 31/6/10: We were up at 5:00am to witness the first clear view of Aba Dablam and its early morning sunlit peak. I raced to get ready, grabbing my coat, gloves, beanie, balaclava and camera. By the time I was ready, 5 minutes later, it was shrouded in mist, Doh! It pissed me off, but I needn’t worry too much about unclear skies. Breakfast, what will I have this time, oh I know packet noodles! We finished breakfast quickly and started to walk up to Chhunkung for our acclimatization day. We left our packs in the room and walked only with a day pack. Chhungkung was roughly 4730 high and took 2.5hours to walk up the shallow incline valley. It was great to walk without our big packs, it made a ... read more

PANGBOCHE TO DINGBOCHE 30/5/10: Both of us slept fine. We had to endure packet noodles again for breakfast. It was a late start because we only had to walk 3 hours or so to Dingboche. By 8:00am we said our goodbyes to the weary headed Sherpa’s, porters and guide and started to walk up the valley. When we hit the first flight of stairs and immediately felt exhausted. Jacinta had a slight headache from the altitude so we took it easy. The track was relatively flat until we reached the bridge crossing the Lobuche Khola River. From the bridge to Dingboche it was hard, we slowly climbed 200m; this was the highest we had ever been, even higher than the ABC trek two weeks ago. At 4410m high, Dingboche was an important acclimatization point for us; ... read more

NAMCHE TO PANGBOCHE 29/5/10: A great night sleep turned into a disastrous morning when the 19 Indians we met the night before decided to get up at 4:30am in the morning and proceeded to, all, go through their morning cleansing ritual. I have written about this in past blogs, especially through India but never thought I would have to live through it again in Nepal. In short it sounded like somebody was strangling a yak 19 times right outside our bedroom door. I still can’t understand why they insists on letting the whole of Namche valley know they are shoving there toothbrush halfway down to their stomach. A quick breakfast, again wholesome noodles with eggs we brought back in Kathmandu. Slowly we whittle away at my overweight pack. We started walking around 6:00am. The visibility was ... read more

We're now back from our trip to Everest, 27 days after leaving! While there we wrote a journal entry every day, and if you're short of sleeping pills, well there's going to be plenty here. So here is what we wrote: Day 1 - Kathmandu to Jiri We boarded the express bus at 8am, 7 hours is all it takes. Nine and a half hours later, and the bus rolls into the small town of Jiri. On the way we saw another bus that had fallen from the road down a steep hill and got a little roughed up. Everybody somehow survived the crash and so we moved on, our driver simply shrugging and returning to overtaking anything that was in the way on any blind bend he could. We found a lodge, or more truthfully, ... read more

The Everest Base Camp trek is perhaps the most famous in the world. It is certainly one of the most popular. In the peak season of October/November, up to 10,000 people take to the route with the foot of the highest mountain on Earth in their sights. In fact, it is hard to think of a good reason to choose Nepal over India as a destination if you are not visiting the high Himalayas. It is the most amazing place, with the highest peaks, deepest valleys and some of the biggest challenges on Earth. The word challenge is pretty appropriate in summing up our reasons for going but having read, 'Into Thin Air', 'The Death Zone', 'Left for Dead' and many others you begin to doubt yourself and wonder if you'll be able to cope high ... read more

We began our trek with a “6.30am” flight….. was never going to happen. Left at about 11am. Breakfast consisted of A LOT of biscuits, and even more cards. Deal or No Deal was an excellent invention from Carla. Definitely an advantage to sit on the left-hand side of the very small and precarious- looking plane. Our first glimpse of the Himalayas was unforgettable. The higher we got, the more they emerged seeming to grow from the clouds before standing magnificently to our left. A whole world away from the smog and the noise of Kathmandu. The Lukla runway is a test of courage but we landed safely, met our porters (who looked about 12. Literally. Bit embarrassing), then set off after a quick lunch. Our guide was called Tilak, who at first we thought was quite ... read more

not the best of photos but finally I achieved one of my lifelong ambitions. I also flew with what must have been the highest cockroach in the world! Unfortunatley David couldn't be with me because he was otherwise occupied with crawling from the bedroom to the bathroom - damn those bugs! Oh well what a shame we will just have to go back and do it all over again. Of course we will be stopping ath the Ganesh Himal what a fantastic little hotel and excellent friendly family and staff.... read more

Today was the first day of our trip up Everest and we were all keen to get underway. I had heard about the flight up to Lukla before arriving in Nepal and was excited to be finally getting up in the air. The flight was about 30 minutes and there were some good views of the Himalayas. Getting closer to Lukla we skirted over some mountains before diving through a hole in the clouds to get visual with very short runway. They slam you down firmly before applying full brakes and reverse thrust to bring you to a stop before the rock wall at the end of the runway. The runway faces into a mountain and there is no second chances if you screw this landing up! Strangely, we had to laugh to see Starbucks had ... read more
