Friday, July 27, 2007 at 1:21pm Wow, well I have been here about 4 days now, and I can' t believe how quickly I have settled in! Am in the same shed with broken keyboard as before, so won't make this one too long... I am having so much fun with the kiddies! They are fantastic! During the day I help them with their English, then in the evening we do lots of singing and dancing! I have taught them the Hokey Cokey, Heads, shoulders knees and toes, and Smelly Cat lol! Yes, I have to wee in a hole, and wash using a bucket of water outside, and yes life is really hard here- but I am honestly loving every minute! The kiddies absolutely love me- I do not get a minute's peace- its MISS ... read more

Hello everybody, and happy Fourth of July! I don't have much to say because life in the village hasn't been all that exciting, but I wanted to update so no one got worried by my silence. I'm spending a few days in Kathmandu helping another volunteer finish up her project before she heads home. We're visiting three orphanages in the city to assess the needs of the orphanage and the needs of the children, as well as take pictures of the kids and make mini profiles of them. We've found out that orphanages don't tell you what they really need and they often report an incorrect number of children. So, we're spending time playing with the kids, taking pictures, and seeing what needs to be done at the orphanages and what supplies they desperately need. There's ... read more

I found myself spending over one week in Bhaktapur, Nepal. As a result of my friend Stephen in Malaysia, I connected with Rajan in Bhaktapur and his family graciously offered to give me a home for the duration of my stay there. My experiences there were incredible and some of the most stimulating and satisfying times of my journey thus far. Bhaktapur is a UNESCO world heritage site. The architecture is predominately brick-based and the windows and doors are intricately carved in a traditional style. Walking around the streets is a feast for the eyes as different religious and cultural scenes parade by in the various carvings. The Newars are one of the oldest cultural groups in the Kathmandu valley and comprise about 50% of the population in the valley. Prior to the country's unification, all ... read more

We arrived into Kathmandu after a crazy flight through Abu Dhabi (where Garfield was always trying to mail Nermal), which was a bit of a crazy airport (with a mosque inside the restrooms), but it did have free internet terminals available! The last leg of the journey was problem free, except for the slightly off-putting guy sitting next to Shane holding a mask up to his face the entire flight -- keeping germs out or in? I'm sure we didn't catch whatever it was... We arrived in Kathmandu late and cleared customs painlessly and met our guide, Shree, who drove us to our hotel in Bhaktapur, right outside Kathmandu. Crashed out and awoke to find Bhaktapur a bustling little village full of shops and street vendors. Went for a cultural tour of the city with Shree ... read more

After KTM we cruised along the Kathmandu Valley for two days. The valley is famous for it's religous temples and sites. First we went to Patan which has a lovely city center and really nice temples to look at. The next day we moved on to Bhaktapur were we sneeked into the city without paying the entrance fee. Another lovely city with beautiful temples. The last day we went to Bodnath, where we glanced at a really big buddist Stupa and then went to Pashupatinath where we were able to observe the cremation of some bodies. We cruised through the valley with public transport, either by bus or by shared taxi. The major problem was the traffic jams. The people from the Terrai are currently on strike (since more than 20 days) and the supplies cannot ... read more

Just outside of Kathmandu there is an ancient city called Bhaktapur, with beautiful erotic wood carvings and exquisite art. This was our first stop in Kathmandu Valley. The wood carvings on the facades of the buildings were amazing. Not only because of their detail but because they have withstood the test of time. The city was founded in the 12th Century by King Dev Malla. "From time immemorial it lay on the trade route between Tibet/China and India. This position on the main caravan route made the town rich and prosperous: each autumn the traders from Tibet came with sheep ("changra"), fitting nicely with the main Hindu holidays, 'Mohni' (Parbatiya: Dasain; Hindi: Dussehra), when nearly everyone in Nepal sacrificed male animals to the goddess Durga. On the return trek the traders brought back to Tibet grains, ... read more

We had arranged to stop off at a place called Bhaktapur on our way back to Kathmandu airport so we left Nargakot at 8.30am. We had been offered a tour of here in Kathmandu but hadn't gone so it was good we had the opportunity to fit it in as we were literally passing it anyway. It is an old town just outside Kathmandu. The architecture dates back 100's of years and it really is a town within a town now. It is fully surrounded by a very high wall and you have to pay to enter. Open court yard areas, large temples and really old local housing. We refused a guide and just wondered around it was nice but we were glad we had not made a special trip to visit as it was much ... read more
