Days are passing fast and our wedding is coming very close now. Only one more week to go. We are busy with the preparations nowadays. We told about the invitations, they are being finalised now and will be distributed very soon (doesn't work by post here). Besides that, we are busy in buying things (more jewels, specials candles,...), talking with people for the program, buying Zoe's wedding slippers (not very easy because they are not used to brides with seize 41),... Also some very typical boxes have to be filled with with lots of nuts, sweets,... All family and friends are coming over to help us! And yesterday we picked up our first guests in the airport, hope they are enjoying their time! Besides al those preparations, we also did some other things. We went to ... read more

Finally, a few days ago , after a long trip we arrived in Nepal . We (and also Zoe's mother and stepfather who arrived one hour later) had a warm welcome-ceremony in the airport. Friends and family were waiting in their traditional dress with flowers in their hand. We said 'namaste' to everybody and received flowers in the same time. We visited many friends and family the last days. Those occasions give us 'puja' every now and then: the typical religious ceremony where you receive an egg and raksi (their famous strong drink), a tikka (dot on your forehead),... Because they built an extra floor in Gyanendra's house, we also had one very special puja to celebrate that and to bring good luck and strongness in the house. We spent one day in Kathmandu (Swayambunath - ... read more

Lack of money means no luxury to pay for entrance fees to anywhere. No more temples or durbar squares. It means missing my date with a Sadhu. It is like being in Tibet without seeing a monk. Have you encountered photos/videos (or in person) of weird-looking men in dreadlocks, covered with ash, sometimes with painted faces, in yellow or orange robes (or naked), who are either begging for alms, doing yoga, or with raised extremities, and most of all, look stoned? Yes, those are Sadhus. And they really are stoned. Seriously. (To make it easier for you to imagine since, sadly, I do not have any picture of them, here's a link to wonderful photographs of these interesting men.) Sadhus, or holy men in Hinduism, have renounced earthly possessions and desires in pursuit of spiritual devotion ... read more

Today I join the group for the Kala Patthar and Everest Basecamp Trek. Very much looking forward to meeting some new people. The last two days have been very good, recovered from my various previous ailments and I'm now ready for the hills. On Thursday, I met up with Ram again, and we took a local bus from Kathmandu to Bhaktapur - another UNESCO World Heritage site. The contrasts between here and Kathmandu are extreme - it is a quiet, almost rural, and architecturally extremely beautiful city, 15km further south of KTM. Getting there was a drag - the Japanese are funding the construction of a new road between the two cities, but it would appear (from my brief experience of building roads) that it's being built in a very piecemeal, inefficient and laborious manner, not ... read more

At first I had no idea what to expect. Actually, I didn't even know what was Bhaktapur two weeks ago. Than, we got on our flight to Kathmandu, and I had to ask myslef, what are we going to see in this land that I know so little about. Small notice, don't forget that we nearly never travel with a guide book... Bhaktapur became very fast an obvious choice. It is an old city 14km from Kathmandu. Most cars are not allowed in, and tourist have to pay 10USD just to enter the city. Somehow, I think cities like Venise should apply the same rule to limit the number of tourists and fund restorations. There is only 14km between the two cities, but it can easily take up to an hour to get there. We decided ... read more

As I suspected, Bhaktapur is a not only a beautiful town but also a quiet and friendly place to stay for a couple of days. The old city is not so big and can be fully explored in one long day. Vehicles a not allowed into the old city so it is much less polluted and crowded then Kathmandu. In addition, i am staying on one of three central squares of the old city so I have a beautiful temples view from my window :-) Today noon I am moving to Nagarkot in order to catch a glimpse of the Everest and some other Himalaya peaks. So, tomorrow I have to wake up at 4 o’clock at the morning to climb the Nagarkot hill with a full intention to watch the sunrise over the Himalayas. Hope ... read more
