16/5/10: I dragged Jacinta out of bed around 5:30am, the view couldn't have been more perfect. The crystal clear air was thin and refreshing, I managed to have the best night sleep yet and my tickly cough had only bothered me for half an hour, it stopped after breathing in some moist air by putting my sleep sheet over my mouth. This worked surprisingly well and the tickle almost stopped in its tracks. Jacinta woke up in the middle of the night fighting for breath, she managed to lose the opening to her hooded sleeping bag and panicked to find an opening before she suffocated under the sheets; I laughed when she told me. Others had the same experience and compared it to drowning without the water. Everyone was up early; we all stood on the ... read more

The Great Trek Begins........................ Day ONE Pokhara to Dhamphus...STRIKE DAY Team 'Anna' (GP,Guy,Me) left most of our luggage at our little guest house and walked to meet Ling, Annie and their Porter Lal for one last coffee before starting the 20ish km walk to the official start of the trek...(strike still going) The 'warm-up' walk was quiet and reasonably flat, and with no vehicles about, our little gang marched proudly down the centre of the roads. Along the way we met with Chickens on a Bicycle (on their way to the big roost in the sky), lots of excited kiddies (the schools were closed too), and the odd Water Buffalo (with a hint of furry Yak). Before long the heavens decided to open and we quickly donned ponchos and cagoules, and for a moment we realised ... read more

13th Nov - 6th Dec Getting off the plane in Kathmandu and driving through the bedlam of pink buses, tuk tuks, cows, fruit sellers and randomly wandering people was quite a shock after our 20 hour journey from England. We had a 5 hour stop off in Mumbai to change flights and we got a little taste of what India might be like when we go back (non-existant personal space, us having no clue what’s going on…). We had picked a hotel from the Lonely Planet and as our cab pulled up, the guy in the tourist information stand informed us that a tour guide would be joining us. He proceeded to sell us on his tour company whilst pointing out various landmarks - the such and such bridge… the so and so building…the municipal open-air ... read more

Day Seven - Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 metres) - 900 metre ascent Today was the final day of ascent as we went from Deurali to Machapuchare Base Camp and then on to Annapurna Base Camp. Whilst only a steady ascent which would take 4 hours, it was hard work due to the altitude and thin air. Starting the day we seemed miles from the mountains but they slowly became visible until we finally entered into a cauldron of mountains. ... read more

We were on day 7 of our trek and had just climbed to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 metres, our highest point of the trek. After some lunch and tea we decided to climb a bit higher to find the best views. We got to the edge of a glacier where a sheer drop provided the most amazing and beautiful views of the entire Annapurna Range. We were totally surrounded by blue sky and mountains and all around us were Buddhist prayer flags and monuments, a truly spectacular location. I knew there wouldn’t be any place on earth which could match the sheer beauty of this place, it was perfect... We celebrated with a small bottle of whiskey and Coke whilst sitting on the edge of the glacier and taking in the view. We knew we ... read more

Day Six - Dovan to Deurali - 400 metres ascent Fairly easy day with only 4 hours walk to get further acclimatised and spend a night above 3,200 metres. We managed to arrive early at our destination to drink plenty of tea, do some washing (well Nat anyway), eat some dhat bhat and play some cards! Relaxing day before our push for the base camp the following morning... ... read more

Day 5 - Chomrong to Dovan - 420 metres descent , 955 metres ascent This was one of the hardest days trekking with a big descent into the valley and then a huge ascent back up the other side. It was made even harder with steps nearly the entire way making it even harder on the knees and legs... plus it was a balmy 17 degrees in the sun!! New Video just added... see the link below...... read more

continued... Day 7 - The Himalaya Hotel to ABC Part 2 begins with a drama! Tired from a few days of tough trekking, and not really that fussed about savouring the stunning mountain views, Nina and Lisa decide that they don't want to continue up to ABC, and will instead retire to the comforts of lower-altitude Bamboo, where we will meet them the next day. So, saying our goodbyes, we regretfully split the group and watch as the girls and Ratna #2 head off back down the track. We forge onwards, in what will be a huge trek day - we ascend about 1,200 metres, passing through a steep-sided valley leading us to Deorali and then Machhupuchhre Base Camp (a phallasy, as the holy mountain has never and cannot be climbed - although Kirsten thinks she ... read more

We started our day at the unsociable hour of 5am to climb to Poon Hill (a steep ascent of around 400 metres) which we were assured would be worth the effort. It was freezing when we set off by torch light in the pitch black with hundreds of stars above us. Dan saw a shooting star and he wished we make it up and back in one piece. We slowly started to pass other groups who had left earlier as they stopped for a breather. Our competitive streak came out and we declined any breaks in the hope of getting to the top first to select our preferred viewing point. So head down and puffing hard we made it to the top in the blistering time of 35 mins (average ascent 1 hour) and were the ... read more
