It was stunning scenery driving through the countryside to Ulanbaatar. We stayed in a fab hostel all done up traditionally and run for an orphanage. We just spent a night there and headed out the next day to Terejl national park to stay in a Ger camp. We had a choice of riding there for 3hrs or taking the ox cart. I rode, but only part way, the horses and pretty wild as they roam free and are only rounded up when needed. Mine was pretty jumpy and about half way decided it'd had enough, i somehow managed to jump of before it threw me off and then bolted, a couple of the guys with us charged off in pursuit and after a while came back with it, i rode on the ox cart the rest ... read more

After boarding the train to Mongolia in Irkutsk, we bumped into a tour group; some of whom were Irish guys who were on a tour crossing Russia, Mongolia and China. We were all in the same train carriage along with some other people from the hostel we had just stayed in. We ended up sharing our cabin with a Russian woman who had no English and an American guy called Stephen. He was en-route to China for job interviews and was going via Russia and Mongolia for some distraction. Needless to say the atmosphere on this train was very different from that of the previous journey. Everyone was drinking and partying on both nights; and so we too joined in. Luckily Stephen was fluent in Chinese and had been to many parts of China before. He ... read more

Well, here we are in Mongolia and have nearly had Tony's bag pinched and mine too, the LP wasn't wrong with this place warning you to watch out for pick pocketers, they've got very nimble fingers here!!!! UB the locals’ call it is pretty cool though, it’s got a massive US presence due to its geo-political positioning in that it’s in the middle of of Russia and China. As one of only a handful of truly democratic country in Asia, it receives a lot of donations from the USA and various other NGO's, and all embassy staff is in UB, the UN have a big presence here so thankfully we found an amazing Irish pub to have a long awaited steak and burger. Our first day was pretty much spent in the Irish pub with Ben ... read more

Two days prior to departing Nepal I was bestowed an unwanted memento, 'Delhi Belly', aka Montezuma's Revenge or Traveler's Diarrhea - there's an oxymoron for you. To think I survived seven weeks in Nepal without any real GI issues but as I was packing to leave... blammo! A slave to the proximity of a reliable toilet. This is not conducive when you're flight gets canceled unbeknownst to you and you spend three days in transit battling one befuddled snafu after another as the airlines scramble to get you to your next final destination. It was an exhausting 72 hrs of waiting and confusion, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn. 5 star hotels were picked up by the airlines as well as meals both in Kathmandu and in Bangkok as the air companies passed the ... read more

Hi Friends, I just wanted to post some fun Naadam photos from this past weekend. It was a complete kick to learn more about this special festival which celebrates Chengis Khan. It is a mix of three sports - horse racing (bareback with 6-9 year old boys), wrestling, and archery. I wanted to get these out to you now. To see photos from the festivities please click here Hope you are well! More soon, Siobhan... read more

London - Paris: 14th May We arrived in Paris in the afternoon after taking the train through the channel tunnel, which wasnt actually that exciting - we were just travelling through english countryside and it suddenly went dark, and stayed dark for about 20mins, and then suddenly we popped up into the sunshine again presumably in French countryside which looked pretty similar. But Paris was lovely - its an enchanting place to be. We walked around some of the main tourist sites and just enjoyed the ambiance - went to a wine bar in the evening, that sort of thing. Its best to stick to the wine in France as it is so cheap and the beer is so expensive, so when in France...... After a night and a day in Paris we caught the night ... read more

Day 149 At 9am we loaded our bags into the grey Russian 4 x 4 minibus, along with our driver and interpretor. We would be sharing our 3 day trip with Pontus from Sweden, Patrik from Switzerland (but lives in Vienna, Austria) and Marius from Lichtenstein. There were 2 backward facing seats and a bench seat facing forward for 3 people to squeeze on. We would be entertained on the journey by listening to tape cassettes with recordings of Western and Mongolian music. After calling off at a supermarket we left the city of Ulan Bator and headed into the countryside of Mongolia. The population of Mongolia is 3 million people, half these live in the capitol and the rest mainly live as Nomads in the countryside. Mongolia has an area size the same as Western ... read more

Day 147 This morning we left our key at reception with the lady sleeping behind the counter and headed to the subway for the last time. The subway took us direct to Beijing Railway Station where we found the correct waiting room for our train. We boarded Train K23, carriage 6 at 7am and found our deluxe cabin (berths 9 and 10) which would be home for the next 30 hours. Compared to the trains we have travelled on in China this seemed like luxury. Our wooden cabin had a set of large bunks, an armchair, wardrobe and shared washing facilities with our neighbours. The K23 tourist train left Beijing at 7.45am prompt. The Trans-Mongolian Express is the famous train line that goes from Beijing in China to Siberia in Russia. It then meets up with ... read more

Boarding the Irkutsk to Ulaan Baatar train I was delighted to find I was sharing the compartment with 2 english students hannah and George. Since I hadn't been to bed I soon crashed out sleeping several hours into the journey but unfortunately missing what I am sure was fantastic views of Lake Baikal. Once we all woke up it made such a pleasant journey just being able to freely chat. It seemed like no time before we were at the russian border filling in what felt like dozens of forms. Just over 6 hours later we were on our way into Mongolia another dozen forms and 3 more hours later we were headed to Ulaan Baatar. I felt so spoiled being picked up at the station by the hostel but since it was free it would've ... read more
