My time in Kuala Lumpur wasn't the best time I've had. In fact it was quite depressing, stressful and caused me to doubt whether I was quite ready to be travelling in Asia at all. The city itself on first impressions was busy, dirty and smelt bad, and I was unhappy bing there. Partially, I know this is because I'm a 'country lad', but also itis because it wasn't hat nice. It did smell. Saying that, many people I have met loved KL, sying that it had a life that other cities didn't have. I did enjoy the bustle of the night market in Chinatown, with crowds weaving their way through the stalls at every turn the words ' DVD movie, sir' being hollered across towards you. as with everywhere in South-East Asia the people were ... read more

We have twenty-four hours in Kuala Lumpur and I haven’t slept since Rome. The Euro made us penniless but the Ringgit makes us kings. We bus to China-town for DVDs (which cost $5 N.Z.). Malaysia smells like Weet-Bix and I can feel moisture on my tongue when I breathe. China town is one long street with blue tarpaulin protecting the seller’s merchandise. Adidas shirts cost five Ringgit, Nike shoes for ten, billabong bags for fifteen, Rolex watches for twenty, and fruit, every fruit that was ever made, all shoved in your face. ‘Kill Bill, do you have Kill Bill?’ asks Julain ‘No Kiew Biew, but I got blue movie’ he shoves some porn pics in our face. ‘You like that huh?’ His accomplices around him egging us on. ‘No, I just want Kill Bill… and… ... read more

I left Singapore on the Friday for Melaka, a large town around four hours away by bus. Melaka, although at first seems to be really busy, it isn't. It's just the badly laid out roads and the poor driving that gives it the impression of activity. I travelled to Melaka with two Dutch guys and a girl, Erwin, Lucien and Carolyn all of whom I met in my hostel in Singapore. Erwin and Lucien were both training to be English teachers, and so spoke perfect English. This was great as it meant that I didn't have to talk 'posh' all of the time. It's amazing how much trouble people had with my slight Norfolk accent - at home I didn't consider myself to have one. Around Melaka there were lots of sights to visit, mostly museums ... read more

We visited Sipadan Island in March 2003. It's off Sabah, Borneo and the jetty is situated in Semporna, about 2 hr ride from Tawau Airport... a bit far as you have to take a small fokker plane from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau, then travel 2 hours by van to a charming fishing village called Sampoerna.. then travel some 45 minutes by speedboat to the island. But the travelling was worth it, as it was the best dive trip we've had in years... in fact, everytime we dive, it's our benchmark. Sipadan has the most accessible and amazing drops, 10m from the beach, you can drop 1,200m straight to the bottom of the ocean.. when we went, the current were so strong and the salinity was high... the salt stung so bad that my wife had to ... read more

... read more

Aaa... Last day in Tioman. The menu in the restaurant nearby was limited but food was quite nice. Decided against a filling breakfast as afraid of throwing up in the journey back to mainland. My guess was right. The sea was extremely choppy and we were swinging left and right. Kinda scary also. Gapi turn green and threw up. Thank goodness for my fast reflexes, I saved myself from being the victim of her vomit :O Car still in one piece. Parking rate We drove around and feeling a little peeved from the ride and hungry we looked around for some local food available. So we stepped into a shop and they were selling braised chicken feet wanton noodles. Then it's back to Malacca. ... read more

Didnt really had a good nite sleep as the sun burnt was bad. Not really a great idea tanning yourself beginning of the trip. Will keep in my mind to do sun bathing on your last day if the trip. Tassa and Tina will be diving today leaving Gapi,Shane and myself decided to do some jungle trekking, hiking to Monkey Beach that we had no chance of landing yesterday. The hike started quite tough - perhaps I wasnt in a great shape and trekking wasnt my forte (Eating is :O). It was all the way up and it took around 1/2 hour to reach our first destination : Panuba. There we decided to clarify with the receptionist how long would it take to reach Monkey Beach from there. Earlier we were informed by some locals and ... read more
