Sat 14th: We get up early, check out of our hotel (Banchoafa) and get the minibus from Krabi down to Had Yai/Hat Yai setting off at 6am. About 11.30am we arrive at Had/Hat Yai. There the information desk at the train station tells us that it's impossible to get a train to Ipoh. We know it's not, it's on the Main 'Singapore to Bangkok.' trainline and has times, train numbers and prices all listed on their website. But, even armed with all that info the guy won't sell the ticket. So, we talk to a girl that sells the bus tickets. Again, no Ipoh. After explaining and showing her a map with the road number on she finally gets the point, and we have a ticket to Ipoh. Of course as is the case with ... read more

Road trip in a sketchy Proton Asia » Malaysia » Ipoh By justwanderingMarch 28th 2007 Hired a slightly ropey Proton car in KL. At least the air con works well, and, being a Proton, it blends in well with the locals' cars. It's great to step out of this heat into "the fridge". Took a couple of hours to explore KL (that's one way of putting it... thing is that the map was terrible, and road signs woeful) and find the way to the road going north towards Ipoh. Stopped at the Batu Caves, where I (like a lot of hapless tourists) was attached by a mob of monkeys after the can of fruit juice I was holding. I had to fend them off, deflecting them in mid air with my rucksack. Nasty little things. The Batu cav... read more

Day 288, 15th March Georgetown - Butterworth - Simpang - Jaram Mas It should be less than two weeks now before we arrive in Singapore and we are all alone doing our own thing! The trip is nearing completion, I wonder how I’ll feel when I actually arrive there? Actually, I feel a mixture of emotions; happiness, sadness, excitement, and a fear of the unknown… I awoke before anyone else in the dorm, packed quietly as not to wake anybody, and left the hostel by 8am. It was a national Muslim holiday today, so I expected it to be quiet. It wasn’t - it seemed like a normal busy day in SE Asia. The ferry was busy, but surprise…FREE! Because it was a holiday. And there was a haze hanging in the air from the fires ... read more

So after dashing through the poUring rain to Lily's car (the rain stopped as suddenly as it had begun) and less than an hour later we were sat outside eating Cantonese/Malay food. After checking out the deserted and extremely loud nightclub we chilled out alfresco with a couple oF Guinesse's. Lily suggested that an early breakfast followed by a Temple visit (inside a cave!) and waterfall trips would be good places to visit on what was unfortunately a whistle stop tour of Ipoh. Now usually I would not consider Rice, Tofu and pasta soup at 9am in the morning but that was exactly what we did. The place we were taken to was heaving and totally unlike the Korean Kimbap eating places we frequently eat atc. Replete and about 8 pounds heavier a quick trip to ... read more

You should visit my country you would really like it. Lily used to say this with regular frequency during teabrakes at work, so when the decision was made to go off teaching sometime later a trip to Malaysia had become more than just a faint possibilty. After confirming with Lily that she was heading back home for Chinese New Year to see her folks and Family in the worlds once Tin mine Capital -Ipoh, the opportunity to meet up was an earlier than expected bonus. As much as it was a wench to leave beautiful Langkawi, in meeting up with someone from back home to catch up on news etc plus in the surrounds of their hometime thousands of miles away was a very enjoyable prospect. Yo People! I am in Penang at the moment. We have just come from Ipoh where i visited the center were i did my gap year placement. I was completely disorientated when we arrived at Ipoh because they have built a new bus station miles out from the center of town and taxis over charge to get you into town. Someone is pumping a lot of money into development in Ipoh. Here are lots of new buildings and a massive theme park is opening soon. However i found that i actually still remember my way around the town fine and lots of things are the same. We got the bus to the center ans i managed to get off at the right place. The bus driver was confused as he couldn't see why a tourist would ... read more

Lessons Learned We took the local bus from central Melaka to the terminal on the outskirts at about 11am maybe. Melak was bigger than Johor Bahru, and a lot less crazy. Once we'd arrived at the terminal and figured out where the ticket offices were, we realised that almost all of the Ipoh buses left at either (a) 9am or (b) 9pm. The one exception was a RM28 bus that left at 2pm. After some deliberation, we decided to carry on to Ipoh as planned. We thought we were being ripped off at first, but realised that it was a fixed price. Lesson learned: book coach tickets in advance. Also, it turned out that the 2pm coach was the slow coach, stopping about 4 times at other destinations before it reached Ipoh. We would have been ... read more

I was very lucky to have the opportunity to take a few days off last week to visit my Malaysian family in Seri Iskandar, Malaysia. I took a inter Asia airline (like Southwest at home) from Bangkok and then another little flight about 130 miles north of Kuala Lumpur to meet Norlina and family. Norlina was our first foreign student when I was 10 years old in Lincoln and met her husband, Sharil, at UNL…so we have always been in contact with the family as they keep growing (now with 5 kids!). I can’t believe that it had been 5 years since I was last able to visit. The country is still just as beautiful and HOT as ever…but all of the kids are so much bigger. I guess that happens! We kept busy running errands ... read more
