Day 19 Today we got up nice and early - well the alarm went off at 8 am. Things to see and do today that we have promised Danika and Zavanna.
Dave and Mary again headed off on their own on the bike and ended up on Gunung Raya (902m), which is the highest point on Langkawi. They were not supposed to go up there, as the hire place bans cars and bikes from going up the hill. Anyway, at the top they came across a hotel called the Coconut Resort and they said the view was astounding. They also travelled throughout the rural roads, going down some tracks that a car probably wouldn’t fit and through rural kampongs (villages).
The rest of us headed to the Oriental Village to go up on the cable car to the top of Gunung Machinchang which is 708m high. From memory, the ride to the top on the cable car is the steepest ascent (descent) of any cable car in the world. You certainly do seem to be heading straight up as you do the climb.
In spite of the white knuckle ride, ask Peter Abby and Zavanna, the view from
the top is astounding. There is also a suspension bridge up there, which we have dubbed “The Bridge to Nowhere”. It is about 60m long and suspended by a beam over the jungle.
Once we left here, we headed to the Mardi Agro Technology Park, which apparently is a fruit farm and agricultural college. However, after crossing half the island the place was tutup (closed). From what we have been told by the locals, they normally hold tours of the orchards of may types of tropical fruits and stop and give samples to guests as the the proceeds. Maybe another time.
We the headed back to the hotel where we met up with Dave and Mary and we all headed to the pool for an hour or so. We had promised the girls they could do batik painting at the hotel so we took them to the painting area.
The drawings have the wax on them already and all you need to do is the painting itself in colours suit your own artistic touch. The young girl running the stall is very good and patient, helping the customers and finishing the paintings off where necessary for the
customer. Zavanna chose a butterfly and Danika a reef fish and as a first attempt at batik did a very good job.
Tonight we went to a buffet and cultural show at the Langkawi Boutique Hotel. The food was a Malaysian buffet and some it was quite spicy especially the beef. Overall the food wasn’t too bad but if you’re expecting 20 types of salad vegetables, you’re out of luck.
The show was spectacular, showing the different dances from all over Malaysia but the highlight was the finale. The performers did about a five minute stint of fire eating. Just amazing, and the heat from about 6 metres away is quite unnerving.
All in all, another great day. Tomorrow we’re off on a boat island hopping. Lets hope for fine weather.
