Last night I decided that if the weather was clear this morning, I'd take a helicopter ride to Macau. It was going to be a splurge, so I wanted to make sure to get the most out of it. This morning when I looked out the window to find this magnificent day, I decided to go for it. I don't remember ever taking a helicopter ride before. I'm pretty sure this was my first. So I was excited as I walked across the launch pad, and stopped to take a picture even though the attendants were rushing me on. We took off from the same place that you'd catch the ferry to Macau -- a pier along the coast of Central HK. Though the morning had been clear, the a mid-morning haze was settling in -- ... read more

Checked out of the hotel, left our bags with the concierge and got a taxi to Coloane. We had breakfast at Lord Stow’s Café and did a walking tour of Coloane Village, a little fishing village on the southern tip of the island. We saw Sam Seng Kong Temple, Igreja de Sao Francisco Xavier, Tam Kung Temple, Tin Hau Temple, and walked through a Macanese cemetery on the hillside. Got a taxi to Parque de Seac Pai Van and the free shuttle up to a replica of a royal Chinese palace complex. We walked up to the top of the hill to the statue of A-Ma, the largest statue of A-Ma in the world, made completely of white jade, though some say it’s granite. The view was amazing and we could see the Macau airport from ... read more

Had our complimentary breakfast at the hotel and took the hotel shuttle into Macau. Did a walking tour of old Macau, which was beautiful. We started at the A-Ma Temple, dedicated to A-Ma, the goddess of seafarers. We went to a lot of old churches, including Sao (Saint) Lourenco, Sao Domingos, Sao Antonio, and others. Saw the Moorish Barracks, the ruins of Sao Paolo (all that remains is the façade, but you can also go into the catacombs), Na Tcha Temple and the remnants of the old city wall. Went up to the Mount Fortress, an old fort on top of a hill with a great view of the island, and also where the Museu de Macau is (we skipped the museum). Walked through the Old Protestant Church and cemetery, which was pretty cool—all the old ... read more

Said goodbye to Kazumi and got the TurboJet to Macau, about an hour ride on a hydrofoil. It was like being in a jumbo jet that rides on the water. A travel office tout at the terminal got us a deal at the Hyatt Regency on Taipa, so we ended up there. Checked into the hotel and walked into Taipa Village. Had lunch at Cozinha Pinocchio (Portuguese food) and then did a walking tour of Taipa Village, full of very pretty, Portuguese colonial architecture. Stopped at Pak Tai Temple, Nossa Senhora do Carmo, the adjoining Carmo Gardens, and the Taipa Houses Museum, a row of five restored colonial-era houses on Avenida da Praia. Went back to the hotel for our complimentary drinks in the lounge. We went across the street to check out the Greek Mythology ... read more

You know the kind of traveling I would love to do? The kind where I decide. I decide when I'm moving onto the next place and when I'm not. So on a day like today when the weather is practically begging you to rest and relax, as is the town, you can actually obey it's command. When your body sas "I want to stay" you can. I remember my friend Annie MacDougalls parent were constantly doing that. I don't think I would want to do it if I had kids that were in school but if I did it now my body would be ready to settle down and be there for them once the time came. Or at least that's what I think. But it's hard to travel like that because normally jobs don't let ... read more

Arthur meets me in his car for a weekend in Macau - we head to ferry terminal (and back again for my passport) and we’re met in Macau by a stretch limo and we’re shown the sights briefly before the driver takes us to the hotel. The Mandarin Oriental is a five-star hotel which is owned by the same company as many of the casinos in “Macau, the Vegas of Asia”. An ex-Portuguese colony, the region makes over half its GDP through tourism and gambling, and it seems Arthur’s family are quite high in the pecking order for handling this revenue stream. After abandoning our luggage at the hotel Arthur, Bill and I head to the museum of motor racing, a tribute to the annual Formula 3 race which takes place on the streets of the ... read more

Summary - Macau, a former Portugese colony, is a great historical place to visit and a small Las Vegas too for those people who wants to gamble. It is the only place in China where you can go to casinos. At the moment there are 18 casinos Las Vegas style in Macau, but as gambling is big business the Macau administration has given new licenses for builing new casinos. In 2007 there will be a total of 24 full operational casinos. All the casinos are located in the harboursector as a special themepark like surrounding. The historical towncentre give you a good idea about the history of this island and the influence of many years of the Dutch and especially the Portugese. The Macau Historical Museum is the place to find out everything about the past. ... read more

macau for a $1? holy cow, macau! when i travel i don't just go to that place to visit the tourist spots.......... or just to capture everything that caught my eye on camera................... it isn't just admiring the place.........it isn't just collecting coins or ref magnets ................ it's experiencing the culture, rubbing elbows with the locals, getting lost and finding your way AND! most importantly, tasting the food! macanese food is characterized by the spiciness of portuguese cuisine, the dominant use of paprika, curry powder and the like...quite an interesting combination...a combination of chinese and portugues cuisine...uh-huh, east meets west... .... here are some of the food i tried while in macau......... did you know that i got my roundtrip airfare to macau for $1? yes, you ... read more

We decided to take a day trip from Hong Kong to Macau, it's recommended in the guidebooks as one of Chinas highlights and it meant that we'd get another stamp in our passports ;) Unfortunately the day we went it suddenly turned very cold and we weren't really very prepared for it so it was a chilly walk around the island! There were some pleasant sights and it's a fairly nice place to visit and amble around but having been built up as a highlight I think we were expecting more from Macau and so at the end of our day we were left a little wanting.. Still, it made a change from the busy bustling Hong Kong scenery and I found a tree I liked! ... read more

Macau, China: Nov. 27-29 We travelled overnight on a bus full of beds (In all my travels, I had never encountered such a bus before). It was much more bearable than the 10 hour torment I had envisioned. We arrived at 5 am in Shenzhen and took the next couple hours to figure out how to get to the Port as we had no guide book and it is near impossible to get around China otherwise as next to no one speaks english and everything is written in Chinese but we persevered, got on a bus and hoped that at some point it would end up at the Pier. It did about 2 hours later after what could be called the extremely scenic route of Shenzhen. We arrived in Macau and were charmed by its ... read more
