Macau became a colony of Portugal after the Portuguese reached Macau in the early 1550s. On 20th Dec 1999, Macau was returned to China, and ever since, Macau is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Prior to 2006, the last time I visited Macau was in 1997 with my family and grandma. We only spent 3 hours in Macau, as we were on our way from Zhuhai to Hong Kong. It was a pity, as Macau is a fascinating place which has an unique mixture of Chinese and Portuguese heritage. Hence, in 2006, I decided to visit Macau and spend a longer time there to explore its historical sites and new attractions. Unexpectedly, the city is so attractive that I visited it 3 times in 2006! Another reason for my multiple visits ... read more

Day 218, 4th January Macau Had a great sleep last night, even though it was a bit noisy being in the room by the stairs. It was strange because there was a gap at the bottom of the wooden walls, like in a toilet cubicle, which helped the mice to scurry from room to room un-hindered. We got up and wandered the strrets to find some good bread for breakfast, then used the net to see if there was any more info from the guys - no, so I left a message with our planned route so that we could meet up somewhere along the coast of China. Also had more mails from my dearest, and posted her a card and a letter today. Stephane and I decided to stay in Macau another day realizing that ... read more

Day 214, 31st December Hong Kong I slept till mid-afternoon then picked up my wages from the Jackie Chan work off Michael. This time it was HK$1000 due to last night’s filming till midnight. As I sat at the hostel table recounting stories to the others about the past week, another surprise happened - a package came from Kathryn. It was full of chocolate goodies, Christmas crackers, and Marmite…Yum! I did a bit of shopping later, emailed again, then got ready for a night oot wi’t lads. We’d earlier made a contact with a guy from the hostel, ‘Azure’ was going to show us a good night out in HK. The name sounds like a prostitues name, but she was anything but. We drank, then went out with our party hats on to the the Star ... read more

Keely and I decide , upon a co-workers recommendation, to go to Macau today. Macau is another SAR territory of China… which, for the last 300 years prior to 1999 remained under the govt rule of the Portuguese colonial government. China resumed sovereingnty at that time. What a fabulous day. We start our day with dumplings (yes for breakfast) at Peking.. we love this place. Then - head off on the MTR headed for the Macau ferry. The ferry lines are long but organized and the ferries run every 15 mnutes. We board our ferry and are surprised at how nice and clean they are… with reserved seats!! Wow the Chinese are organized!!! An hour later and we’re in Macau. We dodge a couple of suspect guides.. until we meet “Peter” - the sweetest guide in ... read more

On Wednesday, took a short trip to Macau, another SAR (Special Administrative Region) of the PRC (Peoples Republic of China). There's a turbojetting passenger ferry that goes from Shun Tak Center on Hong Kong Island to Macau and costs about $20US each way. The weather was looking pretty dismal and the water seemed very choppy as the TurboJet we were about to board rocked a little more vigorously back and forth than I would have liked. The TurboJets are like airplanes on water. Big, comfortable, and fast and even in the face of some rather big waves, the TurboJet cut through the waves like butter. My brothers and I had all taken a dose of Dramamine beforehand but the precaution was largely unnecessary. When we arrived to Macau, the storm was a little more forgiving. Macau ... read more

Hi again everyone, Just a quick one this time, basically an escuse to add more pics! After our short but fun filled time in Hong Kong we decided on a trip to Macau. Macau is on the coast of southern China and a short boat trip away from Hong Kong, also boasting the fact that it overtook Las Vegas in terms of income from casinos, so well worth the trip. So while we were there we visited a couple of top casinos, stakes where a bit high to do any gambling so no money lost there! Instead we decided to spend our money on a night on the town, visiting a couple of bars and the local club. After a few drinks and trying to decided wether the girl chris was chatting too was a prostitute ... read more

Hi Everybody! We got back to Hong Kong on Friday afternoon and went directly to the travel agency. We wanted to check on the status of our China tour. We found out that we could go over on Sunday, the 12th. We decided to wander around Hong Kong for a few hours. We went to Kowloon Park and found it a wonderful respite from the crowds and traffic. It has a nice Chinese garden, fountains, aviary, sport areas, etc. Next, we walked to St. John's Cathedral, the Far East's oldest Anglican church. The doors on the church were very tall and were similar to the doors on our house (which also came from a church.) On the spur of the moment, we decided to take a ferry to an outlying island, Macau. It was a great ... read more

We got a very sleek Hydro-jet from Honk Kong ferry terminal to Macau which took around an hour. Macau was a Portuguese colony handed back to the Chinese in 1999 and is ran like Hong Kong, as a Special Administrative Area i.e. Not really communist. Macau sells itself as the "Las Vegas of the Orient" and while thats is a bit of an overstatement it is full of major Casinos and 5 star hotels. Its mainly visited by incredibily wealthy Asian businessmen and believe it or not there is more money spent here on gambling than in Vegas. History lesson over, we were operating on the other side of the budgetary coin and after getting from the ferry terminal to the city centre we checked into the Central hotel - Perhaps only rivalled by "Chungking Mansions ... read more
