-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sadly, before the Travelblog crash, there was a great write-up of my experiences in Macao. I didn't have any backups of this one, so it is as of now, gone for good. I don't think a re-write so long after the fact would do my experience justice, but luckily, the pictures and comments were left unharmed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------... read more

Got up at 9:00, got packed and checked out of the Lucky guest house. We made our way on foot to the ferry terminal to catch the sea cat to Macau. The journey was only 1 hour but probably the most comfortable id ever had. While onboard we manged to rediscover some chinese prawn chrisps we had had as kids (totaly by accident.) We arrived in Macau and caught a black cab to the Central Hotel, although i did need to give directions to one of the cabbys english speaking mates down their mobil so that they could relay the message from english to cantonese back to the driver. As we arrived to the Hotel it started to hammer it down. The hotel (very basic, bathroom very scanky) was situated in the portuguese colonial heart of ... read more

Macau is the only place in China where gambling is legal, all part of the peculiar "one country, two systems” rule that allows such anomalies. The Chinese love lady luck and gambling is a big part of traditional culture so Macau hopes to capitalise on the huge Chinese and foreign population with a penchant for gambling. Macau is pitting itself as the next generation Las Vegas; according to the sales pitch it’s destined to be more than just a conglomeration of hotels and casinos, but more an entertainment and recreation destination without the tacky and seedy undertones said to plague Vegas. The numbers favour Macau too. Within an hours flight of Macau is a population of over 2 milliion, compared to a paltry 250,000 within the same distance from Las Vegas. Investors are scrambling for their ... read more

Because we hadn't been and because it is so close, and mostly because couldn't let ourselves watch Nip/Tuck for another 24 hours....Mary and I headed off to the neighboring island of Macau. We had separately been there previously, but only to the airport. We had heard people only loved it or hated it. The latest review came from Jaime and Eli who raved about the food and cheap wine....That pretty much sealed our fate...we were off to Macau. Macau was not only the first European settlement in Asia, but is currently the ranked the second most populous country/province just behind Monaco. I actually thought that Macau did not feel that crowded, after being in China for so long being on an island of only 500,000 people feel very solitary. Macau is so small in geographical size ... read more

Day 55 Macau was once colonised by the Portuguese and now, like Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. It still has a lot of evidence of its former inhabitants (apparently less than 2% of the residents here are Portuguese now) both in architecture and food and we set out today to see this for ourselves. Our first stop was the Senado Square, the main central square surrounded by Portuguese buildings and with mosaic style cobbled pavements. This, combined with the portuguese steet names and signs, made us feel like we were nowhere near China, only being reminded by the glimpse of the Cantonese translations of all the signs. Just off the square we saw the beautiful Sao Domingos Church before visiting the ruins of St Paul's Church which now has only ... read more

Today we left our sweat shop apartment in hong Kong to head to Macau. The three amigo's set off bright and breezy, thinking how short the walk to the ferry was! how wrong they were! Ten mins later, and a lot of huffing and puffing later they made a pit stop at the internet cafe! oopsy!! After a small wrap and iced coffee they set on there way again. The ferry to Macau was pretty simple, and there was only a small dilemma when Sooty got her strap caught in the walking escalator! The bag may have a small scar from the incident. anyway, ferry ride was good (bean looked a little peaky, to say the least). The trio landed in Macau and stumbled on to their HOTEL shuttle bus! whooo! We arrived at the very ... read more
