After Johan arrived Bangkok, we would like to go travel somewhere together. Our plan was to go to Chiangmai - Pai and/or Chiangrai. Since I really love traveling by train so I offered to go to Chaingmai by train.. but after checking weather news, weather seems to be bad during this time. Warning of storm, heavy rain, mud slide including 3 schools closed has changed our mind. Discussed with Johan and came across with Macau where we rushed through for one day in our 2004 trip. Because of culture mix, beautiful tall building view so we decided to go there again. Macau - The colorful city of casino.. Chinese characters.. Protugese language.. Chinese temple... Cathedral.. Church.. cultural mix is what we found here.. First arrive at airport, got the hotel by misunderstanding where it's located but ... read more

"Some people ask me why I want to live in this mountain forest. I just smile and do not answer. My heart feels very peaceful and happy. The flowing water carries floating peach blossoms far away. This is a special, beautiful place. Living here I feel that I am not in the world of mortals." --Chinese poet Li Bai Fun Day in Macau with Hideko and her gwailo friend, Rick, from Maine! We explored the 'labyrinth of lavishness', the 'cathedral of capitalism' that is the newly opened Venetian Resort Casino featuring the largest casino floor in the world (my Dad is somewhere smiling) with 3,500 slot machines and 700 gaming tables--yes, really. Complete with 100 high-end designer shops and its own canal with gondola rides, it is truly Vegas in Asia. With the most populated nation ... read more

I had a morning flight to Macau. My flight was actually cancelled the day before, and when I called to confirm, they put me on an earlier plane. Good thing my auntie told me to call the airline. I guess she's had that happen a few times in the past. My cousin arranged a car for me to the airport and the driver wouldn't stop talking to me about Buddhism. I really just wanted to sleep and not listen, but I politely listened anyway, considering my getting to the airport in a safe, timely manner was in his hands. When I was boarding the plane, I noticed that the flight was 95% men. No joke. When we got off the plane, most of them continued to transferring flights to China. I guess they were going to ... read more

As another tourist visa ran out we had to head for nearby Macau for the day to renew ours, especially in light of our jobs, . Macau is only an hour and a half away. The day started with a 7 am bus then straight to the Chinese embassy. We toured the city whilst our visas were being prepared. It was a rainy day, but Macau proved to be bursting with character. Having been an enclave for Portuguese setttlers it is quite different from nearby Guangdong province .The narrow streets are reminiscent of Europe with coulourful, pastel buildings and a lot of ornate metal work. This was also our first siting of the sea since leaving Latvia. ... read more

Macau: Too tired to write about Macau other than its a cool (yet ridiculously hot) schizophrenic city balancing Portuguese and Chinese influences while nipping at the heels of Vegas. Off to Bangkok in the morning.... read more

A 1 hour ferry ride took us from Hong Kong to Macau. At first glance, the place seemed similar to Hong Kong but with some Las Vegas ingredients supplied by the casinos - the cheesiness of the Sands, the tackiness of the Lisboa, the awesomeness of the under-construction Grand Lisboa, and the plain but still opulent Wynn. Subsequent ramblings revealed elements of the mainland (not an enormous amount of English spoken, people staring at us, and more smoking than Hong Kong) as well as Portugal (cuisine, especially baccalau i.e. salt cod, architecture, narrow streets with thousands of mopeds, and street signs written in Portuguese and Chinese). Hong Kong's return to Chinese rule from British ownership attracted much attention in 1997, but the similar return of Macau by the Portuguese 2 years later barely registered on most ... read more

Hello from Macau, a strange place! Were about to leave the city and fly to Bangkok, but in the meantime, since there is free internet at the airport.. Like I said, Macau is a very weird place, full of contradictions. Its in china but when you are there it gives you the feeling youre in Las Vegas. No traces of comunism. Everyone seems to be filthy rich for a start. I can say we were the worst dressed people in the city!!!Its full of huge hotels, casinos, lights everywhere, really expensive designer shops.. and its very clean (actually I read somewhere its the second cleanest city in asia after singapore), quiet.. in the streets, everything is written both in Chinese and Portuguese (thank god for that!) and it-s quite expensive, more or less BCN prices, even ... read more
