We took most of the day off from the tour today. Drury and I were pretty tired so we decided to stay in town and relax and do a little sightseeing on our own. We slept in and got a little breakfast at the hotel before taking a tuk tuk into town. We walked a little through the town and decided to have lunch at a bakery. After lunch we decided to go get massages. Margo and Drury both got a foot massage and I decided to get an oil massage. It was a pretty good massage even though it was hot and the only thing dividing the rooms was a thin curtain. We did some shopping on the main street and Drury and I found some great wood art pieces we wanted, but we couldn't ... read more

Today was an extremely early morning as we met our group at 5:15am in the lobby of the hotel to give alms to the monks. We all got in our Tuk Tuks and headed to the temple close to the town center. It was still pretty dark when our guide Lou gave us a brief tour of the grounds of the temple and then told us what to expect and how to give alms to the monks. We all sat on these little plastic pre-school chairs in front of the temple all lined up in a neat row. We were then all handed a basket of sticky rice that we would ball up into bite size pieces and hand to the monks as they passed by. We were not allowed to touch the monks but were ... read more

This morning we are off to Laos. Our tour met in the lobby and we left the hotel about 7:15am and headed to the Bangkok airport. The Bangkok airport is a massive airport, apparently a plane lands on average every five minutes 24/7. After everyone received their boarding passes Drury and I saw a Post Office and decided to mail a package home that was filled with things we had bought the past few days in Thailand. Our tour guide helped us and what we thought would only take a few minutes wound up taking over a half hour. Our tour guide started to get nervous as we till had to go through security as well as immigration. Immigration line was very long and the rest of the tour was already waiting at the gate. After ... read more

So the guide book said that there used to be a problem here - adventure seekers, fuelled by alcohol and drugs, were drowning and breaking their necks jumping into the river when it was too shallow. However the Laos government had shut the bars down and it is now a family orientated adventure centre!!!! I think they may have missed a bar or 40. They still advertise tubing parties with a free bucket of whiskey! As night falls the bars along the river and throughout town start pumping out the rave music, only alleviated when the power fails (regularly). The quietest spot in town was the Irish bar. Decided against the kayaking, balloon rides, paramotoring (swooping over the town and power cables) and went for a cycle ride Instead. Have to admire the scenery, the mountains ... read more

Aujourd'hui on avait ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng January 31st 2017

Vang Vieng was once known for its hedonistic nightlife, drug fuelled raves and drunken backpackers drifting along from bar to bar sitting precariously on inflated inner tubes as they float down the river. Perhaps 20 years ago that image might have been a bit more attractive but luckily for us the town has worked hard to change its character and it definitely has a more sedate tone today. The change continues though, and the building of large hotels for rich tour groups may yet signal the end for the meagre backpacker. We ended up staying for four nights on the edge of town, far away from the few noisy bars which still operate until the "curfew" at 11pm. We started in the Laos Haven whose small swimming pool provided a place to cool off in the ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane January 25th 2017

We decided it was time for a splurge when we reached Vientiane. The Golden Sun Hotelturned out to be exactly what we needed, especially after we changed rooms when the noise from the kitchen was just too much at 6am! Every day we did something touristy in the morning then returned for an afternoon relaxing by the pool. At US$44 a night it was certainly pushing our budget but it was well worth it. On our first night we walked out to the bank of the Mekong where many Laotians were taking an early evening stroll. The temperature was lovely and we enjoyed stretching our legs around Cho Aravong Park stopping to admire the huge statue which stands as a memorial to the man after whom the park was named. We also passed through some of ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang January 22nd 2017

Luang Prabang is small. Seriously small. You can more or else walk from one end to the other in 30 minutes - that is in EVERY direction. Don't get me wrong there are mountain areas that take longer and things like that. But flat land - 30 mins. One of my favorite experiences was not captured on camera as I had a technology malfunction. I left my camera battery charginger and forgot to take it with me and phoneven not charged. But no worries a nice European couple said they'd send me photos (fingers crossed they don't forget)! The waterfalls were beautiful! Even with all the tourists around it was still tranquil. Depending on which waterfall you did there was a trek up which made you exicted to get to the area you could take a ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang January 22nd 2017

Luang Prabang is a nice little town on a spot of land where the Mekong meets the Nam Khan. In 1975 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritagesite to protect the unique blend of Laotian and French colonial architecture which can be seen everywhere. It is also famous for its many temples which also have an architectural style not found anywhere else. We stayed for three nights at Villa Luangsokxay which was nice enough but a little overpriced for what was really quite basic accommodation. It was very well located for exploring the town on foot, and we were relieved to find that the nearby noisy bars were not going to affect us as there is a curfew at 11pm. It's not really a curfew but the loud music and rowdiness has to stop. There ... read more
