It's been approximately four years since my last blog entry but, alas, it is time to start it up again. A lot has happened in the past four years. After finishing up my post in Malawi, I then went back to the United States, finished some pre-med requirements, and started medical school at the University of California-Irvine. Last summer I had the amazing opportunity to go to Tanzania with ten of my classmates to teach ultrasound technology to 100+ clinical officers and other healthcare providers in the town of Mwanza on Lake Victoria. The trip ended with a safari in the Serengeti/Ngorogoro and a treacherous hike up Mount Kilimanjaro. While I did not blog about these experiences, the most memorable was probably getting food poisoning on my first day up Kilimanjaro and forcing myself to make ... read more

Often overlooked as the backwater of Southeast Asia, this sleepy perception might also be part of Laos's charm. I had been told to expect things to be much more laid-back than Vietnam; although truth be told, that isn't hard. I was also told that my overland journey there would be the bus ride from hell on a chicken bus where you're sitting in the aisles upon sacks of rice and manioc flour. Well about half of that description was correct; there definitely seemed to be more stock than people on the bus but at least the people could sleep in sleeper berths. I had my own little space right at the back amongst all the luggage and foodstuffs away from everyone else - sacks of peanuts were stacked like a fort around me. It was nice. ... read more

We got dropped off in the centre of Vientiane and were just walking up the road to our hostel when we bumped into some friends we had made tubing, Yvonne and Freddie from Frankfurt, who happened to be staying in the same hostel. We checked into a dorm and picked up two more people (Tano from Vietnam and Simon from Germany) who were single travellers and headed out for a drink. We all sat together in a bar overlooking the night market and then headed to a local street food restaurant. Wow, Laos food can actually be tasty when you go to the right place! Next day was a bit miserable and drizzly so we all sat chatting at the hostel waiting for some sun. Eventually it came and we explored a few temples, some monuments ... read more

We arrived at 1:30amcovered in grime from the bus and unfortunately the hostel we wanted was closed so we had to pay for a very scruffy hostel. A beds a bed I guess but let's just say we were not staying here another night! We made our way to Easy Go Hostel in the morning and were greeted by really friendly staff who immediately invited us to go tubing with them the following day. We went out to explore after we played a little PlayStation and crossed a bamboo bridge that went out into the mountains. We weren't sure whether it was the right direction as the path on our phones didn't seem to exist in real life - oh well! We were also overtaken by groups of screaming Chinese tourists on dune buggies who were ... read more

Our stop over in Chiang Mai consisted of buying an excessive amount of snacks, some water and dollars. We just spent that night at the guesthouse playing cards and drinking beer :D. The next morning we were picked up (an hour late) for our journey to Luang Prabang in Laos. After we went through the border we were dropped off on on what initially looked like a normal bus but we were pleasantly surprised that it was a sleeper bus and was amazing! It was basically a normal bus divided into upper and lower decks with sections for 2 people to lay down and sleep. A relatively comfortable journey and we woke up in the very gorgeous Luang Prabang, a city that runs across the Mekong River and its tributaries. We decided to walk from the ... read more

The capitol of Laos - Vientiane is a nice enough city to stroll around for a day or two and that is precisely what I did for my time here. Not a whole lot to write about. I found an overpriced guesthouse for $80,000kip. The rooms here are all overpriced and demand far outweighs the supply so I considered myself lucky. I walked about the city took in the various Wats that dot the streets, went to the museum, and made friends with some locals. All pretty standard stuff. The museum however was a little odd. The first floor had a couple of dinosaur bones, but the second floor was dedicated to the "glorious rise" of the People's Party and the resounding defeat they handed to the "American Imperialists". Commie propaganda at its best. The city ... read more

Leaving Phonsavan behind on the local bus ($95,000kip) I entertained myself on the eight hour journey by looking at the mesmerizing scenery of jagged limestone jungle covered mountains on the winding road. The winding road however also led to a number of children getting sick all around me. I again was entertained. Sounds strange, but you have to do something to occupy yourself on these long bus rides. My destination - Vang Vieng. The legendary backpacker party village all centered around tubing down the Nam Song River. Anything used to go here. You could do and get anything. That was until 22 tourists died last year and countless others before that. The Lao government torched all of the zip lines, jump platforms, and bars on the river. The party does still go down in town, but ... read more

Crossing the Mekong river into Huay Xia, Laos was easy enough. Once on Laotian soil, things got complicated. Trying to navigate the process of obtaining my Visa on Arrival was challenging and when I finally was stamped into the country about two and a half hours had passed. The whole passport stamping and paperwork involved - in any country - to me seems so senseless. Now the choice was to either head North to the jungles, or South down the Mekong River to the ancient capitol Luang Prabang. The decision was made and we booked our tickets for $220,000kip ($27.50USD - for the record, I love saying kip. It is the funniest currency name ever) for the two day journey along one of the World's great waterways. This was a journey I had been looking forward ... read more

We are now half way through our tour and I still can't believe it. I really have to keep telling myself that we are in Asia, and especially in Laos. I never thought I'd ever come here, but it really is amazing. The food has really been incredible and the people are so friendly. I knew I would enjoy myself and find Asia interesting, but I never knew I would be having this much fun and learning so much and having such a great time doing it. Today is our only full day in Vientiane, Laos so we started a day with a tour of the city. Of course our first stop is a local temple. Our guide joked with us that OAT does not stand for Overseas Adventure Travel, but stands for Oh, Another Temple. ... read more

Today we are flying to Vientiane so everyone on our tour loaded all of our bags onto a bus, but first we all got on some more tuk tuks for a tour of the royal palace. The palace was really beautiful. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take any pictures so all I have are pictures of the outside as well as the Temple on the grounds. We then took the tuk tuks to the edge of town where we met the bus to take us to the airport. Luang Prabang airport only has two gates, but when we arrived there were a lot of people waiting to check in for several flights. It took quite a while for everyone to check in and then we all had to go through security and by the time ... read more
