After our mega chilled day yesterday I woke up bright and early so decided to take my yoga mat out as had kind've neglected it a bit the past week and found a lovely quiet spot overlooking the Mekong and got a good session in, the weather was so hot even by 10 am it really felt like a good work out that i needed after all the cakes and wrong foods lately...... I then finished with a swim in the Mekong as it had felt more like a bikram session with the intense heat! I swam out to the neighbouring island again when what do i see on the way but the goats that had gone missing the night before stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere, poor things, all rather bizarre, as ... read more

Woke up about 930ish, Karen was still asleep but it was a lovely day (and already piping hot!) outside and i had the dilemma of yoga or a swim, with the heat the swim won, tho decided that bikram yoga could be quite good here with the heat, but there'll always be tomorrow ;-) We'd planned a bike ride over to the neighbouring island Don Khone later so didnt want to knacker myself out too much and the beach was calling :-) So had a dip, some sunbathing, breakfast on the hammock - yes we still have a hammock even though we don't have a bamboo hut so all good :) Around lunchtime we set off for our bike ride, we cycle for about half an hour up to the bridge where Don Det meets Don ... read more

Carrying on from the previous day - sorry the last 2 days have kind've blended into one with the sleeper bus! We arrive to the amazing white beach and I leave Karen waiting there with our luggage while i set off to find Mr Mo's our guest house which i booked online, we were supposed to have arrived the day before so a bit worried they might not have received the last minute email and given our room away, but after about an hour's wait our room we were told was ready and we settled in, it wasn't bad as accomodation on Don Det goes, it wasn't a bamboo hut with hammock, however we knew guesthouses here were hard to get and this was all we could book online and so it was fine, and not ... read more

Today we had another lazy day and were productive only when we bought our bus tickets to Bangkok. We did go to the tour place at 12:00, but the guy wasn’t there, so we have rescheduled the meeting to 19:00…hopefully he’ll be there. Anyways, the bus seems to be about the same price to have them make all the connections for you rather than to do it on our own. So we found a place that gave it to us for 240,000 kip each ($30) and we have to meet at the restaurant/guesthouse/tour agency at 11 tomorrow morning. We could have bought a bus to Ubon in Thailand and then switched to train, but it was way more expensive. So first we go to Pakse by van and then take a bus to Ubon and then ... read more

All I have to say is that if you ever see the company we bought from, don’t buy there. It was a complete sham. We got there at 12 and found we had a group of seven and then we followed a guy down the road to a different restaurant where we could buy beer before getting on the boat. This was a different man from yesterday and he didn’t speak English. Apparently the other man went to a wedding today, so he wouldn’t be around. Anyways, after much debate over who got how many beers and whether or not there would be a place to keep them cold, we loaded our beer on the boat and got in, the French Canadians sitting on the floor of the boat as there were not enough seats. We ... read more

Today we slept in until we rose (hey, we’d had a long couple of days) and at about 12:30 or 13:00 went to lunch and rented bikes. We had been told that Don Kane island was the more touristy one and thought it would be worth it to wander around there. It was a short and very bumpy ride to the bridge connecting the two and we were unhappy to have to pay to get onto the island. We didn’t really know where we were going so we just started riding and ended up at Long Beach. There are three restaurant huts there and I think it’s the place you have to go to in order to catch a boat to see the dolphins. We just wanted to explore and I wanted to cool off in ... read more

Boy, that was close. I woke up at 5:33 and realized we had missed our bus! Ronald sprang into action and went to the front desk and I packed up my bag. We were lucky and a tuk tuk driver was waiting for us about 5 minutes later and took us not too far away where a van was waiting with people in almost every seat and all of the bags waiting on the sidewalk to be loaded. At about 6:15 everyone was loaded in the van with the bags in the aisles and in front of the door. It was the strangest van ride, not only because things were crammed into every space available, but because the seats weren’t spaced evenly. On one side there were five rows of seats while on the right there ... read more

We travelled down to Vientiene, the capital city of Laos, in a group of 7 - Charlie, Nicky, Allen, Lindsay, Cecilia, Em and I. Vientiene is not what I expected for the capital (and easily the biggest) city in Laos: quiet, unexciting, expensive and not much to it really. I guess it is still developing though as there was construction everywhere. We arranged to meet up with the others later and Em and I set off for Pha That Luang, which is this massive golden centre piece to the city - it is in fact a religious statue. It was pretty cool, gleaming in the late afternoon sun, although we were too late to go inside. There were also some neat temple buildings around it. Actually on the way there we passed Patuxai which is a ... read more

4000 islands in the heart of the Mekong River was our next destination. A rough ride on the night bus took us from Vientiene all the way to Pakse where a quick change and we were on our way again. On the night bus we met an Israeli couple and had a good talk with them about the politics and religion in the Middle East. It was good to hear their take on things as opposed to the views of our media, until we got told to go to bed by a neighbouring Chinese lady (it was only bloody 9:30!!). Anyway we arrived on the island of Don Det and search for some accommodation. Here life seem to slow down into first gear, then when you thought it couldn’t get any slower, it dropped into neutral, ... read more
