“The journey is difficult, immense. We must travel as far as we can...” At the end of this round-world trip I’d be interested to know how many hours have been spent on boats, buses, plans and trains. We’re keeping a tally of different modes of transport, but it didn’t occur to us in the beginning to make a note of hours spent. With England being a comparatively small country we have not been used to spending hours at a time on the road, and now reflecting on seven hour flights to the Caribbean for example, taken with anticipation a few years ago, it seems like such a short time now. Now I could tackle that kind of “long haul” flight without so much as batting an eyelid. I have it down to a fine art. In ... read more

Caro: Bizarrely the trip from Cambodia into Laos was relatively simple. Apart from the fact that we ended up in a different place to where we expected. We were picked up in a mini bus and there were approx 9 of us in it! There was no rubbish on the floor, no recently killed livestock and one person per seat. It all seemed way too simple. We caught this bus to Steung Treng and then took another bus to the border. The guy who was our guide who was organising the visa etc. came to the back of the bus where Joff and I were sat with another British couple. He said that we would be arriving in Don Det at 1pm, we thought that we were going to the main island in the 4000 islands ... read more

After a few hours on a bus we got a short boat ride to Don Det in the four thousand islands. This is where the Mekong River fans out and shit loads of river islands are created, don't know whether there are 4000 but probably if you count every rock. They managed to chuck my, and a few other peoples, bags in the water which was a bit worrying but was only really my clothes that got wet, and clothes can dry out as you probably know. The part of the island we stayed on is very backpackery but also fairly small and chilled out. We went for a walk around the rest of the island when we arrived. The idea was to have a wander and stop off at a few bars but after about ... read more

Making my way to Cambodia For the past couple of weeks I’ve been in southern Laos. Sorry you haven’t heard from me in a little while, but it can be really hard to find wifi in this part of the world. It’s definitely not like back in the states! When we left Luang Prabang, we took a bus down to Vientiane, which is the capitol of Laos. It was so hot outside when we got there! We would’ve done anything for a pool to jump in or a good water balloon fight. The neatest thing we did in Vientiane was go to Buddha Park. I’ve seen a lot of Buddha statues on my trip already but never so many in one place! We were there for almost 2 hours looking at all the different statues and ... read more

So its week 4 now, the one month anniversary. We left Phnom Penn heading for Laos, a brand new country and another fresh stamp in the passport. We stopped over for a night in Kratie, to avoid a hefty 12 hour journey and instead split it in to two 6 hour journeys. Kratie is a small town situated on the Mekong, about 200km north of Phnom Penn (total guesstimation there!). As soon as we departed the bus a posse of tuk tuk drivers greeted us like old pals ´´Hello my friend! I take you to my guest house – cheap cheap for you sir!‘ Ryan gives me a look of despair and says ´Ah im really not in the fucking mood for this‘. A quick cigarette break gives us the willpower to push on and try ... read more

The amazing 4000 islands........... Getting here took a long 2 days, stopping off at Savannahket overnight, but the never ending bus rides, dust, fumes and aching bums were worth it! The Islands are completely gorgeous, if you want paradise this is it. Although more and more tourists are beginning to make the trip down it is still relatively unknown and still has a certain vibe about it, as if we are the lucky ones that have manged to see the islands before they become some huge tourist trap. There is no motorised transport on the islands, walking, cycling or catching a boat are the only ways to travel which adds to its uniqueness and tranquility. There are two main islands that people tend to stay on; Don Det and Don Khon. Don Det is slightly more ... read more

Kong- Lo Cave, Village home stay and the most amazing 4000 Islands! Where to start.............. the past 2 weeks have been incredible! We decided to head south through Laos and try and get to the Kong-Lo Caves which at first seemed impossible to get to but actually were a pretty easy bus ride! Everyone in Vientiane made the journey seem extremely complicated but with a bit of help from the web we decided to take a chance and catch an early morning bus and hope that we would get there (which we did)! We arrived in a little town called Ba Na Hin which is the nearest point from which to get to the cave, we stayed here the night and then headed to the cave the next morning. The cave was out of this world, ... read more

From Pakse, which is a fairly quiet little town we went to Laos's old capital Champasak. The journey there was a mission ans we ended up being great entertainment for the locals by sharing local transport with them! Is was great fun as they were so hopeful, but getting back was another mission in it self. However, Champasak was interesting. There were some very old ruins of temples, which belonged to both the Hindus and Buddhists. My pictures don't really do it justice. Today, we have just got back from the four thoudand Islands, which is the very south of Laos.It was like a little oasis after all the travelling lately. The Island we went to, Don Det, was small but did the job. There was even a great little Indian restaurant there! We spent ... read more

Well today we decided to do what Don Det is really all about and that was literally just chilling! Especially being this is the first place with a proper beach since I got here, it was so nice after cramming in so much the last few weeks just to chill on the beach all day with a good book :) I did quite a bit of swimming and swam over to a neighbouring island, had to watch the current though as it's strong in parts, and although not dangerous i didnt fancy being stranded on another island away from what civilisation there was,ha! I also noticed some goats tied up to a boat near the shore, quite a random place to tie up goats, but those of you who know all about the goat thing back ... read more
