I arrived in Luang Nam Tha after what was quite a pleasant bus ride actually. No fancy airconditioned bus, just an old fashioned rattling bus with the windows open, just the way it should be and how I like it. The ride from Luang Prabang was quite mountainous for the lager part of it. Very spectacular, especially with the rain pounding on the windows for the better part of the day. At a certain point we all had to get out and help dragging a fallen tree off the road, for the bus to continue. It took about 9 hours in total, not too bad. I got some wonderful accomodation, I believe it was 40.000 Kip for what was basically a budget hotel room. Attached bathroom with hot shower and western toilet, a massive bed and ... read more

... read more

Vientiane We arrived into the capital of Laos, Vientiane, after a long bus journey from Tha Khaek. We had heard mixed reports about the City, some saying it was bland with little to do and some saying it was a lovely place with a relaxed atmosphere and lovely bars and cafes. We definitely agreed with the second opinion, the town was a very easy place to spend time, which was just as well as we ended up having to spend 5 nights here whilst we waited for our visa for Vietnam to be sorted out. We spent the days wondering around the streets, visiting the markets, admiring the beautiful Wats and drooling over the fantastic French restaurants and bakeries (who served the best fresh baguettes we’ve possibly ever had!) Apologies for the title, I really shouldn't force puns on unsuspecting victims! Anyway, so we're in Laos - cool! First stop was Vientaine (the capital). Quite hilarious leaving freezing Kunming and stepping out of a plane after a couple of hours into stifling heat and a wall of humidity .. unreal. We didn't really know much about Laos so we sort of sandwiched in a week here on the recommendations of some nice folk. Turns out they were onto something. We'll probably appreciate it more as we go through the tourism madness that is Vietnam/Cambodia/Thailand but this place is about as laid back as it gets. Cruising into the capital in a taxi, we thought we were passing through the outskirts of town only to realise that we were in the CBD. Kelly (who is well ... read more

Matt Writes ; We have spent the last two days driving through Northern Thailand. Two long bus journeys from Chang Mai to Chang Rai, then to Chiang Khong where we stamped ourselves out of Thailand and crossed the Mekong in a longboat (wobbling from the wieght of our backpacks) into Laos. Our next aim is to continue North to get deep into Laos. We are up early to decide whether to catch the renowned-to-be-over crowded Louang Phabang longboat trip, or to try something a little less orthodox. We go for the latter, catching a sawngthaew to the bus station. Here we catch a minibus heading North East to Loang Namtha - This will be our first experience of Laos public transport. At 9am, the white Toyota (blue and red go-faster stripes) chugged earnestly out of the ... read more

Day 20- The bus to Vang Vieng Warned that this was a 'hairy trip' by some fellow Aussies we loaded up on some Kwell before changing mini bus three times and finally setting off. The five or so hour trip was windy but very scenic, with a couple pit stops for necessities such a pringles! The four of us searched the town for cheap but clean rooms and funnily ended back where we started at Thavisouk Guest House. We headed out for lunch guided by the lonely planet to Nokeo and Jez who was adamant to avoid every 'Friends" bar/cafe. Where people happily order "happy"pizza's and shakes and watch re-runs of friends for hours on end!!Unfortunately the grilled fish wasn't as good as described.. After we sussed out the tubing and caves, and moto hire for ... read more

As expected we took this day easy and did not do much at all, played cards and made plans where to go next... Muang Sing tomorrow. We have rented a motorbike and drove to Muang Sing. The ride was spectacular, cool breeze, the smell of the forest, and as far as you could see hills covered in trees, what more do you need.... Once we have got to Muang Sing we found out there was not much to do so we drove aimlessly until we found ourselves on the china border, turned around and drove different directions.... bloody Chinese borders they are everywhere... so we have headed back to Lung Nam Tha. "Stop I want to take picture..." I Romi have shouted at Reni. Ok turn around... shit! .. where? .. in my shoe... the only ... read more

Leaving Luang Prabang to go explore the far Northern reaches of Laos was more difficult than I imagined it would be. For the last couple weeks I have been wanting to get away from the cities and find some more remote areas of Asia. On my first real opportunity to do that I have decided to go North from Luang Prabang rather than a more typical Southern backpacker route. However getting on the bus this morning, and leaving the comforts of the city, has sent my emotions and energy in a spin. Journal Entry - May 1st Hop aboard the local bus to Luang Nam Tha, a small city surrounded by spectacular landscape well known for its preserved nature, remote villages, and real Lao cultural experiences. This is to say, there aint much going on in ... read more
