Let me explain. There's a few reasons for our title, none of which mean we didn't enjoy our time in Japan. We enjoyed it immensely. We did find, however, that we had a bit more trouble communicating while we were in this country than we have had in other countries on our trip. First of all, on a purely logistic basis -- our mobiles and Blackberrys didn't work in Japan! Plus, Ted's laptop died and he had to have it sent back to the Sony factory to be fixed, so we didn't have his laptop for our time in Japan. So, communication with our life back in the US was limited to the time we could get on our sons' laptops -- Tyler was very generous with his, I should add. Secondly, we had a number ... read more

... read more

When we first rented our apartment, the realtor arranged to have a "technology" company called Asist Solutions which does a lot of work for them and the expat community to provide an estimate on phone, internet, and satellite television connectivity. They came out the day of our walk through to provide the estimate for: Internet set up Wireless router set up Two skyperfect tv (for Japanese tv) antenna purchase, installation, and connection Armed Forces Network (AFN) TV (10 channels of US tv) satelitte antenna installation and connection All together, the estimate was for 128,000 Yen or a little over $1100. There was just one hitch; we had not been able to locate an AFN antenna; they were on back order at the Base Exchange. We had the two decoders but still no antenna when it came ... read more

Fast trains and clean streets, Oh how I love Japan! Tokyo and Takayama. Arriving in Japan was one of the happiest moments of the trip. First because we were no longer in China and never had to go back if we didn't want to, we were in the first world now! Second because I wasn't really sick anymore other than a runny nose, and third and most of all my best friend Tandy was there at the airport to meet us. She is a pilot for Continental and was able to get some time off and catch a first class flight out to meet up with us and travel with us for a week, it was great. We arrived in Tokyo somewhat late and after some difficulties deciphering the subway map, we made it to our ... read more

Our first proper day in Japan started bright and early as we headed off to the Grand National Sumo Tournament at Ryoguku Stadium. When Linda and I originally decided to go to Japan I had one wish. Well two actually. Number 1 - Become a professional snowboarder (obviously!) Number 2 - See some Sumo. Luckily for us we were in Tokyo right in the middle of one of the six annual Sumo tournaments and I was determined to get in as much wrestling action as possible! Not wanting to miss anything we arrived at the Stadium fairly early in the morning. We'd even got our helpful concierge man at the hotel to write down what kind of tickets we wanted in japanese in case we ran into problems but we managed to score some B reserve ... read more
