Konichiwa to you all Arrived Tokyo and settled into hotel Next morning I had prebooked a visit to the Imperial Palace gardens which is limited to 120 persons per visit twice a day need to prebook as arriving on the day there were no places left Taken around Palace grounds and outside of Palace itself - a newish concrete building replacing the one destroyed in 1945 Went on to East gardens - litttle cherry blossom out yet Afternoon went to Electric City at Akihabara. Lots of neon lights and brash signs but prices only just lower than UK internet. Not as good as Hong Kong by what we were told Today went to Akabusa to see Sensoji temple and old market area After lunch got tickets for Kabuki-Za theatre to see one act - 50mins ... read more

we started the day taking the subway to the ghibli museum in mitaka which was a small town about 30 minutes away. what i noticed first was how quiet people are here... when you walk through the subway station you're amongst thousands of other people but all you can hear are footsteps. no one was talking. and when we arrived in mitaka, when you closed your eyes you felt like you were in a ghost town since you hardly even heard footsteps, and since it was not nearly as busy as the main part of tokyo. the ghibli museum is one that is focused around the animator miyazaki's films like totoro, spirited away, and princess mononoke. there were no pictures allowed inside but... i snuck a few anyway. whoops. apparently the tickets are hard to get. ... read more

the day started off at 7:30 am (why so early i dont know) with the same buffet breakfast at the keio plaza hotel. its ok, but getting a little old. then, a trip on the train to the the yoyogi park and the shrine that was there. there was actually one couple getting their wedding pictures taken there, and also a procession of another wedding party i think. it was very different than an american wedding. first off, people were in traditional japanese garb. and it was really somber and kind of depresssing. after that, we wandered out of the park and stumbled upon this outdoor market that we apparently caught the last day of. got some snack food and i bought some stuff to bring back to LA. after that, we went to shibuya which ... read more

Tokyo. How should I describe it? Busy, crowded or expensive. I will say busy, and crowded, but definitely not al that expensive. We arrived in Narita Airport and breezed through customs (so much easier than Hong Kong) and the airport is so clean, as we found was the rest of the city. The next thing we had to do was find an ATM, however we found this to be a problem because there is lots of them about but very few that will take foreign cards with the Cirrus or Maestro symbols, and the same for downtown Tokyo! We bought our tickets for the Limousine bus and in true Japanese procedure queued for the bus, every bus was arriving on time so much noise but exciting. The trip took 2 hours to Shinjuku, a lot of ... read more

after a 10 hour flight (which fortunately i was able to sleep through since i had a whole row to myself), and a bus ride from the aiport to the hotel, I'm' finally here! No need to go to internet cafes like in europe since this hotel has internet access. It's pretty cold, a little colder than in paris, i think. Since I didn't really get to the hotel until 8 pm or something, I didn't get to really explore the area too much but we're going to have an early day tomorrow. Shelby is helpful since she pretty much understands and speaks and reads Japanese, so she's been getting us around and ordered me a sandwich today. It's 16 hours ahead of LA time, so my timing is all messed up. It's 10:55 pm here ... read more

After the Mitsui symposium on 14th and 15th March (refer to my previous posts), Victor left Tokyo while Mingxian and I stayed back in Tokyo for more exploration. Mingxian had 5 semesters of Japanese lessons in NUS and he did a 6-month internship in Mitsubishi Chemical, so he can speak fluent Japanese and he knows the Japanese customs and etiquettes. Mingxian booked a room in an inn in Otsuka (near Ikebukuro), so we travelled from Chiba to Otsuka to deposit our luggages in the Otsuka inn. After putting down our luggages, we took a tram to Sunshine City, one of the largest shopping malls in Tokyo. Sunshine City boasts an aquarium, a planetarium, a history museum, a office tower with an observation deck at the 60th floor, a Namja theme park (Namja is a Japanese ... read more

I feel that thus far in life, I've fulfilled most of my dreams. Not to say that I don't have a longggg list of things to still accomplish...but to date I feel pretty content. Living abroad has always been in the Top 5. Now that I am here in Japan I am realizing why it is that I craved this experience. There is something so educational about being uncomfortable. You can be the most laid back, open, adventurous person alive (which I strive for...) and still feel uncomfortable in a new environment. Tokyo is one of the easiest and hardest environments EVER. So far I have felt ok with only understanding 1/10th of what people are saying to me. The food is yummy, people are nice and the subway is fine as long as you have ... read more

It's hard to find a single word to describe Tokyo. If you ask me how Tokyo is, I can easily find dozens of adjectives to describe the city, among which are "dazzling", "fast-paced", "efficient", "amazing", "crowded", "breath-taking", "religious", "disciplined", etc etc. If you ask me to use only one word, I guess the best choice is "exciting". Tokyo is indeed exciting. The city is like a hyperactive kid who is trying to attract attention, and it succeeded in attracting my attention. As a result, I'm also feeling hyperactive. Life is fast-paced in Tokyo, but I like the speed and efficiency of the Japaneses. People in Tokyo are also courteous and considerate. People switch their mobile phones off or to silent mode on trains, and people never talk on their phones on trains. On escalators, people ... read more

I had decided that I wasn't going to leave Japan the first year I was living in Japan. I wanted to drink in the full experience and let my Japanese language studies sink in. So for my fall break I just stayed in Sapporo and made the rounds and drank myself further into my Hokkaido home. But with my friend flying in for spring break and the knowledge that I still hadn't seen Tokyo yet in my head I decided it was time to see what the biggest city in the world had to offer. It was strange arriving in Tokyo and not feeling like it was an alien environment. I had always expected that landing in Tokyo would feel like the opening to Lost in Translation, but it felt for the most part normal. I ... read more
