Hi everyone! I am sorry I haven’t posted a blog entry in so long. (I seem to start every blog entry that way, don’t I?) A few weeks ago the blog host site lost its email service so it could not send email notifications to our subscribers. Thus, I thought I would wait to post an entry until the email service was back up, but that STLL hasn’t happened, so I am going to post this entry and then send an email to everyone from my regular email and hope that (1) I can do it and (2) I don’t miss anyone. If I miss someone, I apologize in advance. We have really begun to feel settled here in Tokyo and are enjoying it immensely. I would go so far as to say we are loving ... read more

When I first arrived in Japan I taught lessons about traveling since it is my passion in life. I told my students about all the incredible places I had been and intended to go, including places like living on a boat for a week in the countryside of England, eating the best baguettes in the world in the south of France, hiking the Swiss Alps, scuba diving in Mexico, drinking Czech beer in Prague, riding a camel in Tunisia, and wandering the canals and red light district of Amsterdam. As the year went on I boasted about hiking Fuji-san, riding a bicycle to Shikoku, and my desire to harvest rice. All these amazing things did nothing for my students. I soon realized that a) leaving Japan was not high on their priority lists and b) the ... read more

Hi all! So Tokyo is super fun and I the food is the best best best part! First off for those that have never been to Japan, you rarely find one stop shop Japanese places. Meaning, in the states you have sushi, tempura, tonkatsu and even soba in the same place. Here, restaurants are much more specialized...and for good reason! Usually the ones that are not, well, suck. During my first week here my whole team took me out on the town. Mind you it was a Thursday night, but to my Japanese friends Thursday is as good as Saturday! I've attached some photos of my business partners and friends. I have been working with most of these people already for a yr plus so I know them pretty well. That helps during the language breakdown ... read more

We just had an amazing nine days in Japan - first in Tokyo, then in Kyoto. In Tokyo, we stayed with our friends, Chris and Miki, and their children, Kaz and Miwa. Our first day there, we were blessed with unseasonably warm weather in the upper 60s. We even saw some plum blossoms and it was lovely to get a taste of Spring. After a tasty soba noodle lunch (Max loved eating from the big wooden spoon in his soup that was more like a ladle), Chris and Miki took us to the famed Meiji Shrine (known as Meiji-Jingu) located in a beautiful garden. In the middle of urban Tokyo, we walked through a massive park to the shrine and the kids had a good time washing their hands in the special fountain set at the ... read more

Japan is very very cool even without having the contrast of China, so for us, it is paradise. We got off the plane, sailed through customs, and just as planned Beth's friend Tandy was there to meet us. She is a pilot so can get all sorts of free flights so she came out to come travel with us for a week. We easily caught our train into town and then when we were dropped into the tangled web they call a subway system and we were looking really lost within 5 minutes two different people came up to us offering help. That is when Beth and I knew finally we were safely outside of the red monster. We got to our hotel, I bought a beer from a vending machine, and then we basically crashed. ... read more

We just had a couple of days in Tokyo. We went to see the Imperial Palace gardens, Harajuku (this place where the crazy youths hang out and get dressed up in these crazy outfits), Meiji-ji shrine and Shinjuku one day. The next day we headed out to see Mt Fuji at Kawaguchi-ko, this lake area near the bottom of the mountain. It was very picturesque but the mountain gets more hazy from about lunchtime and so the camera does not seem to have picked up the mountain from the top of the cable car very well! I was pretty freaked out when we went to this place for lunch where you cook skewers of food over a charcoal pit in the floor and were presented with a live fish on a skewer - you were supposed ... read more

First stop Tokyo! Spending a few days in the hustle and bustle, bright lights, big city. Some interesting contrasts between the noise of Shinjuku and the serenity of the Imperial palace right in the middle of it all. Chilly but blue skies and sunshine every day so far!... read more

The pleasant train and subway rides brought us right back to the same hotel that we'd stayed in with Tandy, but this time, only a tiny double room for me and Aaron. Despite the fact that we'd arrived on a friday night we decided to go to bed early due to the fact that Saturday would be a big day at Disneyland. Tokyo Disneyland Resort is massive, they have their own train system going around the whole thing, just to get you from one park to the other. Two parks? Why, yes of course, the same as Disneyland is to California Adventure in LA, Tokyo has Disneyland and Disney Sea. We decided to go to Disney Sea first and thought wrongly that we could get a park-hopper ticket, we'd have to buy a whole day pass ... read more

Arriving in Tokyo, after months in south east Asia, was a real contrast. Armed with detailed directions to meet my sister (who moved out with family in September) I casually stepped off the plane in my t-shirt and flip flops then being hit unprepared by the cold. I say unprepared but I was warned about it before hand, doesn’t detract from how cold it was though. The next thing that hit me, and this was to stay consistent throughout my stay, was service. As I've mentioned in previous entries, the locals of any of the places I'd encountered so far have been great, but in Tokyo its taken up another level. I've never stayed anywhere 5star before but the treatment I received right from stepping off the plane was excellent. Everyone treats you like royalty, not ... read more
