Day one! Current mood: listless Naturally because I had to be up at 4am and faced 14 hours on planes I did the sensible thing and went to bed at midnight after consuming a certain quantity of red wine. Chatted with friends, and went to sleep as my head hit the pillow. 3:51 woke up before the alarm and realised that one or two things had been left in Sam's room. Not used to having house mates yet, still it will be good to have someone in the house. I hope that she doesn't find the stash of red wine in the wardrobe! Drove like a maniac as I pfaffed around leaving notes for Sam and got to Christinas place same time as the taxi, paid $45 for a cab to the airport to catch ... read more

I am cheating on this Blog as am in China but was in Japan I promise. The net and things in general are expensive in travelling terms so if you are trying to save money then Tokyo is not the place to go. However the people and the sites are well worth the visit. Ueno is lovely the park has been there for years and the zoo has loads of different animals (to be expected). The main attraction being the panda although the panda that I saw looked depressed alone and lived in sxxt conditions no wonder they find it hand to breed them. Tokyo Tower was an amazing way to see the city which just seems to go on for miles and miles. The metro is the best way to get around try getting a ... read more

So I found a map yesterday of some cool shopping places in Tokyo. So I try and walk there, on the way I found some little shopping places and get a much needed umbrella (it rained some yesterday and today it may rain as well, plus it looks like rain in Kyoto when I get there). I did a little bit of shopping but spent most of my time being lost :( i walked 7hrs straight, but it was neat still being Tokyo and walking around. So I had my first meal at a Tokyo McDonalds! Seems like my tummy is funny and if i eat anything close to meal size it gets upset with me, so mostly just snacks. Some Onigiri (rice balls), crackers and whatever else I find. So i learned something about Japanese ... read more

Today was a great day. Didnt have a hard time finding my way around AT ALL, and when I went back to the station I had come from, I realized just how far off I was wondering from my hotel last night. I mean, it was pretty bad. Thankfully I was able to figure everything out today, and the palce I wanted to hang out was right behind the station. I went to Ueno park today. It has a cool shrine, the Zoo, and a few museums. I got there kinda early, so I walked around first. I was happy to see the Siago statue. He's the guy that the movie The Last Samurai is based off, tho the movie has NOTHING to do with Siago (Doesn't even use his name), in fact about the only ... read more

So far my experience of Tokyo is like being in New York City for the first time, but by yourself, and you cant read anything nor talk to anyone for help. The directions I had to my hotel were horrible, and it took me awhile to get a cab flagged down (ok maybe that part isnt like New York). I had two maps, but they were almost useless to me, but not to my cabdriver cause he took the paper and found the place for me. I dont get internet w/ my laptop so I have to use the computer in the lobby. Not that bad, just means that I wont have any pics up until after I leave Tokyo. The day before Christmas is when I move on to Kyoto. But first I need to ... read more

I had a frustrating experience getting out of Hokkaido for Tokyo. Due to bad weather, the shinkansen stopped running on Monday afternoon, and I found myself back in a Hakodate hotel room for the night. I was tired, I'd had to wake up at 5:30 am on Monday morning to get a series of trains which would see me in Tokyo by 7 pm. Tuesday morning saw me exhausted. I had already booked another early morning train to be sure of arriving back in Tokyo. The train ride itself was quite nice though, I did a lot of work on my laptop. An elderly woman sat next to me, and at one stage tried to give me chocolate, or something wrapped like it! She was really quite sweet. Finally, the outskirts of Tokyo began flashing by ... read more

Greetings all! I apologies in advanced if this later becomes illegible, it's almost midnight here and I've been up since 6am. Oh the glory of an hour and forty minute commute. Anyway, I figure it's about time I catch you up on my doings as of late. So, as I said last time, I was off to China town! This was another one of those commutes that took forever, but it was a lot of fun. I was able to successfully navigate the metro system. Actually, as long as you have a map with the roumaji names, it's really not that difficult. I'm always scared though, thinking, "What if this is the wrong train?" But in the five weeks I've been in Japan I've only gotten on the wrong train once. And that was an easy ... read more

So, for those of you reading this, you may notice a bit of lag time on my entries. That is, they will probably be covering events that happened a few days ago. It will probably be like this until the end of August when I have regular internet access in Shanghai. Until then, my apologies. ------------ So, we left the house at 7am this morning for our 14 hr direct flight to Tokyo Narita. There isn't really any way to describe such a long flight except that it is sort of dream-like. That is, it leaves you absolutely devoid of any real sense of time (especially since it was daylight the entire way), such that 4 hours left seems like "oh, that's all?" I slept for maybe 30 minutes and talked for a bit of ... read more
