Stop and Smell the Flowers Hanami season is a special time in Japan. Literally meaning "flower viewing", it starts of around the end of March, when the Sakura cherry blossoms begin to bloom. These trees can be seen just about everywhere, but its frequency does not take away from people's appreciation. Many festivals take place in the countrie's public parks, and flocks of people gather to enjoy the blooming flowers. Many like to have picnics, where they spend the entire day just laughing, eating, and, drinking with their friends and family. Business man also join the masses, but usually in the evening. Temporary paper lanterns are hung around the parks, to illuminate the gatherings into the night. Its a wonderful environment. Everyone is drunk and friendly and invite you to their picnic areas for some food ... read more

When we were about to take off I was excited. The plane trip was very long, but I watched the Bee movie twice, Alvin and the Chipmunks and 4 episodes of the Simpsons. We stayed in a Tokyo ryokan ( a Japanese inn). We stayed in a Japanese style room with the matresses on the floor. We went to Tokyo Disneyland, it was very fun. We were going to go on the spinning teacups but the queue was too long so we saw some shows and the Disney parade. We spent a day at Ueno Park where we went on a swan boat ride, mum and dad pedalled and I steered. Next to the lake there was a cherry blossom festival, Japanese people really like cherry blossoms. The cherry blossoms looked beautiful. Sayonara from Albert.... read more

Our last few days have been a great Japanese experience. We had a great day at Ueno Park (in Tokyo) where the cherry blossom had 'arrived' 9 days early. Almost overnight, the blossoms came out in mass, and were at the stage of full bloom, heralding the start of the cherry blossom festival. There were lots of different cuisines, we ate with the locals, and their children practised their "English" on us. It is a sight to see thousands of Japansese walking amongst the trees pointing their cameras at the blossoms !! We also spent time at the Tokyo museum and saw Japanese artefacts dating back to BC. Our last night at Sawanoya ryokan held fond memories. It is a family run inn with 16 rooms and 4 generations living under one roof. Their hospitality was ... read more

They don't do text messaging in Japan. This is by far and away the most foreign and unusual Japanese trait so far. After trekking far and wide through the streets of Tokyo I have a mobile phone now (also a free towel and mushroom man mobile mascot) but I'm not quite used to the fact that I no longer have a mobile as an all important socializing tool, but, in fact as something to use in an emergency. Huh. I didn't really see that one coming in the land of electronics and gadgets, but at least I've finally caught up to the rest of the world and have a camera phone ~~ ... read more

Hi guys! Well, it's me again! Today, we went to see the cherry blossums. They are all coming out at this time of year, so I really have to tell you all about them. But before I do I must say about the swan ride that I had today. We went on one of those boats that is shaped like a swan and you have to pedal to get everywhere. Me and my brother went on one. I don't think we co-operated very well, but it was fun either way. Now, back to the cherry blossoms. It almost looks as if all the the trees have been snowed on. It's really beautiful! I took heaps of photos. They also had a festival on for the cherry blossoms. They had so many differents things there. Have any of you ... read more

All trips have their preparation, and ours was certainly no exception. At long last on Sunday 23rd March, 2008; we were finally away. Albert was the stand out performer on the first day. The poor chap was apprehensive on take-offs; the main presenting symptoms being white knuckes, pallor of color and a look of fear on his face. The kids in general loved the long flight - being wined and dined while they watched movies. After a long days travel we arrived at Sawanoya Ryokan about 2100 (local time). Slept well. Our first day we woke to a rainy day, and ventured our way into Tokyo. We went to the Sony building to look at the latest in electronic gadgets. The weather won, and we went back to our ryokan early, a bit cold and ... read more

Hi Guys, Well, you saw the title, and it's true. Today, we went to Tokyo, DisneyLand. It was so cool! We saw all the Disney characters. We saw a huge parade with music, dancing and just plain fun. We didn't get any souvenirs, but then again, none of it was actualy that cheap. ( $$$$$ ) We went to see a play, and it had so many exciting things. It was all lovely. I had a really good day and I hope I have heaps more just like this one. I'll try to keep you all posted on what I'm doing, so check often. And don't forget to leave a comment! Well bye! Full on day starting with -12C in Sun Valley. Over 25cm of snow overnight and the sun is coming out so I managed to get some pics of one of the runs i was on yesterday, looked much steeper in the sunlight!! We said our goodbyes to the Captain, (runs the ryokan with his wife and son) and headed for the bus stop. I had decided to spend some time in Nagano to see if it had anyhting more to offer than the bank and the answer is not much. I had expected that it would be a bit more focussed on the snow sports but I could only find one small shop selling outdoors gear, and while prices are generally pretty reasonable the prices for clothing is way more than in Oz. I did find ... read more
