... read more

I think I could spend a whole week in Ueno Park, as there's so much to do! Shame we just had a morning to fit in as much as possible, although this was partly due to Rupert getting 'museumed out' before me! We started off at 'The Museum of Western Art' stopping first to admire the statues by Rodin outside. The museum itself has a large collection of pre 18th Century paintings from the likes of Rubens, as well as 19th and early 20th Century works in the 'new' wing including works of Monet, Van Gogh and Picasso. Every time I visit a museum I find a new painting to love and it's always the one not in the gift shop and inevitably the name is forgotten by the time I get home, I should really ... read more

---ooo--- English below ---ooo--- Ohayo gozaimass! Promenez ... read more

What's up Canada? Welcome to Marissa and Trish's....or Marish's blog. We know the name's corny but we couldnt' think of anything else! So we left Montreal over a week ago but didn't leave Canada till Saturday cuz we spent the week in Vancouver. Other than the constant rain, it was great!! Thank god for my cousins entertaining us or we would have been bored without having the beach to hang out at.....thanks Epsteins and Bogdonovs!! They make the cutest kids. Our plane ride to Asia was quite the adventure, there were endless problems, starting with Trish's bag being searched because of a swiss army knife left in it she didn't know about....sorry Sue I had to leave it at the airport!! Then Trish's name was called over the PA system, they left out the last name ... read more

It's been a long time coming but we finally made it! our journey started at 7am Saturday in Birmingham and we arrived 3pm sunday (local time). how's that for an epic first leg? the flight was pretty good and the British Airways staff were superb. We got bumped up twice on our seat reservations and both ended up with extra legroom. there was a lady with a baby due to be sat next to us but as the flight wasn't full, the stewardess moved her back a few rows where she would have more room and we ended up with 3 seats all to ourselves! Aside from the poor selection of movies on board (I think they were aimed at people a lot posher than us), it was just about the most comfotable flight I've ever ... read more

On arriving in Tokyo we checked into a Ryokan, a traditional Japanese guest house complete with futon beds and Japanese customs, such as taking your shoes off at the door, wearing a kimono and having (very) hot baths. It was a really nice experience. One of the first sights we saw in Japan was the Sumo tournament which was really interesting, very ceremonious and ritualistic. The fighting itself was in very short bouts and often the wrestlers fell from the ring, fortunately onto other wrestlers as they are very big guys! Tokyo is a great city, the atmosphere is amazing, the neon lights, the crowded streets, the masses of people crossing the roads. It is a very cool and bustling place, the people are trendy and very polite. In and around Tokyo there are temples and ... read more

Started out today on very little sleep, as per usual, dad kept me up all night snoring. Thank God for green tea with breakfast... We ate at the Imperial Viking Sal buffet at the hotel. Which was fine, but a little overpriced. We had Rudy and Ted (dad's coworkers) with us, and together we set off for their only day of sightseeing in the city. We hopped on the metro at Ginza station, about a 10 minute walk from the hotel and took the Ginza line to Asakusa. Asakusa is an old neighborhood - narrow streets, colorful booths and old temples: We spent a good bit of time at Sensoji Temple, passing through the shopping area of Nakamise on the way. Sensoji is the oldest temple in Tokyo, supposedly built in 628. It's very colorful with ... read more
