Oh God. I just walked across Nishi Kawaguchi to Sanaes parents place to go online and write a story about my Gaijin Nemisis only to arrive at Sanaes parents house and realise the middle button of my jeans was unbuttoned. And they're the kind of pants that really do gape if not done up correctly. All of Nishi Kawaguchi has seen my white and blue stripy bonds, but thats not even the worst of it! The worst part is I was listening to Barry White, and anyone who listens to Barry White on their I Pod knows that you don't walk whilst listening to Barry White - you strut your foxy stuff. So I just strutted my foxy stuff through the suburbs of Japan with my knickers on display. I'm so humiliated. I'll write about Gaijin ... read more

It was about 4 in the afternoon when I was poked in the lady zone with a plastic banana. It was just one of those days. At home all of my friends were getting pissed and playing two up and I was getting sexually assulted by a 6 year old with a banana I had willingly given him only moments before whilst trying to explain the difference between "yes it is" and "no it isn't." Example: No, it isn't ok to poke sensei in the hoo ha with a plastic piece of fruit. Anyway, it seemed to be one of those kind of days. Until i got home that is, and I found Sanae, the light of my life, cooking up a storm and opening up a bottle of sparkling. She bustled towards me with a ... read more

It's not a good idea to move house on 3 hours sleep because then you end up getting confused and wearing white tracksuit pants and black work shoes with Sanaes mums cardigan wheeling your bag across to the other side of the suburb. If you do this, you will get a few weird looks and muttered Japanese comments. Anyway, it may have been unconventional but at least we're all moved in now! We've also had our first guest, Sanaes boyfriend Manabu, and although he walked back with us to our place after dinner at the doma doma, he still didn't mind waiting outside, and then ringing the doorbell so Sanae and I could look at each other in surprise and say "Oh! That's the doorbell!" and "I wonder who that could be?" Which was very nice ... read more

I got my first present from home today!! AND it's a brilliant one - Thank you so much! I'm thrilled, touched and a little bit giddy with excitement. The rest of you can all send me presents too you know. Or is that my job to be sending them home? Hmmm... possibly. Anyway I can't possibly go shopping for presents today because its ever so rainy and cold outside. And I have to practice my lesson for tomorrows class which will involve me saying various letters, numbers and fruits over and over again. There's something I'm dying to write about but not sure if i should as this is, after all going to be on the world wide web for everyone to access. There was a strange person in training today. I really shouldn't say more ... read more

First and foremost - a big thank you to all my lovely friends who put up with my moaning and wailing at the end of last week, and made me feel better. You know who you are, and if it wasn't for you I'd probably still be sulking in my pyjamas writing adolescently on a piece of paper things like "It's so haaaaaaard" and "I wanna go hoooooooooome" and "Japan is meeeeeeeeean". Anyway, like always, once you complain about something enough it magically gets all better. Today was a long day for Sanae and I but it definately paid off and I am finally making head way with the whole living in Japan thing, as you can see by the following list: * I have my alien card - which means I can leave my passport ... read more

Ok, I'm starting to relax. It's 40 minutes into my training and a british guy has just gone into great detail explaining what I need to do tomorrow afternoon, when I take my first class. It might not be as bad as the panic attacks keep making out, I can have a test run tonight at home and be prepared. Hmmm... somethings happening outside, Mr Trainee goes to check it out, I hear him say "She's ok" and then come back into the room. "Leia" he casually asks (the brits ALWAYS get my name wrong) "Were you doing anything after training today?" "No" I reply innocently, wondering if I was perhaps going to be taken out for getting to know you drinks with some of the other gaijin. "Ahh good" says Mr Trainee "One of the ... read more

The restaurant shifted first to the left, and then to the right. I put down my chopsticks and glance around the restaurant. The general noise has gone down, but no one else seems to be panicking or even have noticed that the third floor restaurant is dancing about on the street with us inside it. It must've been my imagination. But ahhhh! It can't be my imagination because the restaurant is moving again! Why will no one else notice this! I simply can't be this drunk, I've only had two drinks! "Sanae" I gasp "What is that?!" Sanae swallows a mouthful of Omurice and has a calm sip of her Kahlua martini. "It is just an earthquake" she smiles assuringly at me and goes for another casual bite of chicken. Just an earthquake? Just a freakin ... read more

When the large, wet and very naked Japanese woman bent over in front of me I knew this wasn't going to be an average trip abroad. I was sitting in a bath, completely starkers, next to my darling friend Sanae who I had last seen a year and a half ago during a tearful farewell at Phuket Airport after a week of decadance, 10am cocktails and bad behaviour. And now here we were, naked together, 3 hours after my plane had touched down in Japan and I had my brief and bewildering insight into the new life I was meant to be living. To be completely fair it wasn't altogether too bewildering on the train trip to Saitama - I mean trains are trains no matter which country you're in, but because I had never been ... read more

1: Week 1 Asia » Japan » Saitama By BekkiJune 18th 2007MotokajiI've arrived in the land of the rising sun. Even simple things are complicated here for me; my first toilet experience left me wondering which of the array of buttons flushed the toilet without giving me a high pressure jet wash! So I was so glad that I was greeted by a friendly English face, Paul, who I met through my Japanese evening class. He's been over in Japan for about six months (I think) having married a Japanese lady, Megumi. These next photos are taken during my first week in Japan when Paul and I went off exploring his area, as well as a trip to Tokyo.... read more
