Isakaya As you'll probably find when I get that next post put up (it's coming I swear), my housemates (Yon-chan from Korea and Patrick from Sweden) and I tend to make frequent excursions to the isakaya (think a bar with booth space). It's a nice, dark place to just sit and have a couple of drinks with friends. Quite fun. Anyhow, my usual drink of choice is a coke and rum (the only rum drink i could find that didn't come with a colorful little umbrella in it.) Our usual Isakaya, Doma Doma, has them for a reasonable price. So, when we isakaya (I can use that as a verb, right?) we go to Doma Doma (it also has great salmon sashimi). Well, last satuday Doma Doma kindly informed us when we arrived that they were ... read more

Apologies Sorry for the lack of updates it’s been a rather busy few weeks. Anyways, on to week one’s adventures. Out of Tokyo Monday morning I was met by two girls for Seigakuin’s European-American culture department, Harumi and Yuki. After short introductions, and my instantly forgetting of their names (this becomes quite common), we headed off for Ryogoku Station, bags in tow. Now, it should be said that Japanese trains are not good places for clumsy, luggage-laden gaijins. As we hit transfers at Akihabara and Ueno, I found myself deathly worried that I was going to take a turn too quickly and slam my backpack into someone. Thankfully, the trains weren’t excessively crowded and I managed to make it to Miyahara Station without causing an international incident. Stepping out of the train, the girls led me ... read more

I swear, I'm working on a new post detailing all of my adventures of last week including meeting the host family and traveling to Shibuya and Harajuku over the weekend. I'm just kind of busy right now. BUT, I had to post this. As I said before, my "To buy in Japan" list had started to drop items before I came. I could live without the games that had been released in America. Well, I lied. As you can see from the picture I posted, I gave into my urges yesterday and rushed to Akihabara to buy some goodies, namely, a Playstation 2, Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix and Final Fantasy X: International. Now, I have versions of both these games back home, buuuuuuuut these versions carry wonderful all-new features with them including new weapons, bosses, ... read more

My visa arrived today so Gabe and I walked to the Post Office to collect it. We saw so many great little family-owned stores and I was so happy to find my tea set! I had been looking for the perfect set, and found it in a little shop that was closing down. The lovely lady who owned the store was retiring. If I lived there I would have bought so much more- the chinaware was absolutely gorgeous. When I got back to Gabe's flat I booked my flight home. The only flight I could get was the next day, or I had to wait a week for the prices to drop again. I didn't expect to have to leave so soon. We went out for real sushi that evening and then Gabe took me to ... read more

I went to the John Lennon Museum but it was closed for the day, so I explored the expensive shops in the area instead. Gabe dropped me off and we had an Autumn Latte before he went to work. I had lunch at my favourite little pasta restaurant in Warabi. You can sit there for hours drinking free coffees, so I did just that. I decided to go shopping in Ueno the next day. I was looking for boots and found exactly what I was looking for! I also bought souvenirs and lots of great clothes, including a sweet dress for Willow. Gabe took me to his favourite Mexican restaurant for dinner and introduced me to the American owner- the first I'd seen in over a week! But even he didn't understand my hybrid accent. The ... read more

I held my chopsticks in front of me cautiously. The raw piece of Horse wobbled and sauce and Raw Horse juice dripped slowly on the table. I was starting to feel sick. I took a deep breath and hardened myself up. I'd been talking about eating Horse Sashimi for 6 months now, I had to do it. And besides what kind of tourist would I be if i didn't try horse? I'd be laughed off the backpacker circuit. Another deep breath and the Horse was in my mouth. I chewed furiously through the applause of my friends around me and tried not to think of Mr Ed. Clip Clop. Clip Clop. The meat was stringy and chewy in my mouth with a strong repungent taste. It didn't seem to be getting any smaller and the smell ... read more

The earthquake woke everyone in our little flat up, the shifting of the bed, the rattling of the mirror and the sharp intake of breath from Kizzy lying on the bed next to me means that it was at least a magnitude four. I rolled over on the small lounge and faced my longtime friend from Australia. She was lying on her back with her eyes fixed on the ceiling, a familiar vague look of terror forming silently in her eyes. "Earthquake" I muttered, my voice thick with sleep. "Oh" she replied, darting me a look "I thought you were shaking the bed" and thus comforted by the knowledge that it was not me causing her sleep disturbance, but in fact a natural disaster, she rolled over and fell once more into an enviable slumber. It's ... read more

My last lesson as Sensei Reah took place today at Tokiwa kindergarten. I felt like having a bit of a celebration so I veered off the general cariculum slightly and ended up getting them all worked up with the missing game before having a Hokey Pokey Dance off with all of my morning classes. Because I have both morning and afternoon classes there I've grown quite fond of the school, and have realised after today that the school has grown quite fond of me too. I gave a small speech at the end of each of my classes that it was my last lesson and they have to be good for the new teacher etc and then to my shock some of my kids started to cry and cling to me. It was lovely that they ... read more

One of my students Ayaka came to class early today, so were practicing reading together. She was telling me how hard she was finding it and I said that I understood, I can't read any Japanese at all, so she's doing really well and all those other teacherly things which completely threw her off track. "You can't read Japanese?" she asked me "Nope" I replied cheerfully "Not even your name?" she asked "Well...." I hesitated here "No." The truth is I can write my name in japanese, but knew if I said yes I'd have to show her on the board and it wouldn't look to good if I got it wrong. I am her teacher after all. Ayaka turned to Satsuki and babbled away in Japanese, Satsuki smiled at me and translated "She wants to ... read more
