All the women in Sanaes family have been spoliing me endlessly all week. Sanae started the treatment on my birthday and it was continued at my birthday party with Sanaes parents on Thursday night where Oka san made a collection of all of my favourite Japanese foods for dinner, Sanae bought me a cake with my name on it and I was plied with presents from Sanaes parents, grandparents and friends from home that had posted things over care of Sanae. On the Saturday Sanae and I ventured to the country to visit with Oba chan (Sanaes grandmother) where the spoiling continued with more presents and a never ending supply of food: pears, grapes, purple sticky rice balls, botamochi, pizza, okonomiyaki, ginger, 3 different types of takuwan, pickled cucumber, miso soup, yaki soba, large red ... read more

I was horrified, fascinated and completely thrilled. the old man was hunched over his fairy floss making machine mumbling to himself, twirling his spare arm around in the air and puffing away furiously on an amber lit, tightly rolled cigarette. Phoebe came up behind me and requested I take a photo of her, I flapped her away impatiently "Shhh, not now... I'm watching" I stayed rooted to the spot, my eyes not leaving the old mans mouth. His lips quivered. I held my breath. Then just when I was sure the ash was about to drop right into the pot of soft fluffy sugar he gave a spluttery cough, spat his cigarette on the floor, cackled, wrapped up his fairy floss and blundered his way to the front of the stall to present it with a ... read more

Have I told you how much I love being a kindergarten teacher? I'm not sure I've mentioned it, so let me state for the record, I absolutely love it. I think I'm pretty good at it too, my students seem to like me, although I get the feeling that most of my afternoon students think I'm a little bit mad for my tendancy to juggle plastic fruit or sit for 10 minutes explaining the difference between "My name is" and "I name is" with a stuffed octopus on my head. I have two different tyes of classes, which are simply classified Mornings and Afternoons. The classes are held all over Saitama, so in a week I usually go to 7 different kindergartens, usually with the same assistant. The morning classes go for 20 minutes (I usually ... read more

Oka san (aka Sanaes Mum) has been soooooooo good to me since I got here so I searched high and low for a thoughtful present and practiced my Japanaese constantly throughout the day so I could say Okasan, Happy Birthday perfectly in Japanese (which I did - Yay!) Not much else to say about it, the sashimi party was great and a wonderful lady is an other year older!... read more

Haha! the gaijin nemisis is back on the radar!! Sanae's been on holidays for the past week from work, and as I don't have any morning lessons we've been enjoying a sloth-ish life sleeping in until 11:30am and staying up until 4:00am eating Ice Cream, gossiping, making plans for the summer and practicing dance routines. You know the usual kind of stuff you do in Japan in the early hours of the morning. Tonight, to vary the routine, we met up after dancing, paid a visit to her parents, and then tottered off to the public path for some relaxing, cleansing happy times. What does this have to do with Gaijin nemisis? I hear you ask urgently, anxiously waiting for the news. Well, I'll tell you. After the public bath it was still quite early (for ... read more

It's strange, I've been in Tokyo for nearly four months and the longer I've been here the more of a tourist I feel. I mean, sure, I now eat rice for breakfast, can push my way with the best of them on public transport, no longer take the free tissues they hand out at the station and I can't remember the last time I used a knife and fork, but.... I really feel more western now than when I first arrived. I've been trying to pinpoint exactly what it is thats making me feel this way and have been finding it really hard to do. Its small things. Tiny insignificant things that get my attention that confuse me endlessly simply for the fact that the mindset behind it is so completely different from my own. I ... read more

As of today I have no more morning lessons! This is a little bit bad as it means I need to get more private students (or risk facing possible bankruptcy in September) but it is mostly good because it means that I don't have to go to work in the mornings!! Hurrah! So on the eve of my 6 week summer (morning) holiday in Japan I have decided to go ahead and write myself a list, or a small guideline on how I will be spending my Summer abroad. I will not under any circumstances leave the house in the middle of the day for tourism or sightseeing as I will quite possibly melt into a human puddle on the road. I will instead stay at home and eat chocolate truffles, accented by a chilled glass ... read more

For some reason whenever I live in a different country to my home country, I, along with all housemates get sucked into a different type of CSI. London was my time for the original CSI (Vegas) and Tokyo has turned into the time for CSI: Miami to shine. In other words, Sanae and I are hooked. So, to coincide with the dramatc and exciting finale of season 4 Sanae and I decided to devote our theme night to our current favourite show and play a game of "Follow the Evidence", a spin off of the CSI Vegas themed game my friend Katie and I used to play in London called "The Evidence Suggests" The cast Leah as Calleigh Dusquene - cheerful and beautifully accented bullet expert Sanae as Eric Delko - sex crazed half latino/half russian ... read more

I sniffed the air curiously and a wave of nostalgia swept over me. It was the smell of Alex, my big bolivian friend from Sydney, I looked around curiously and gasped in shock. My god, it actually was Alex!! What the hell was he doing in Japan! In Saitama! Without calling me! I shuffled my handbag to the other shoulder and prepared myself to lunge on him in a giant hug, when someone bumped him, apologised and Alex answered back in Japanese. Hmmmm... I thought to myself, I know Alex can't speak japanese..... I held onto the handrail and swung myself around to try and get a better glimpse of his face while running through a mental checklist. - Business suit - Intricately detailed facial hair art - Frameless glasses - Fancy phone/blackberry type thing - ... read more
